๐Ÿ˜” If you saw my last post, youโ€™ll know that through absolutely no fault of their own, my two beautiful senior girls, Yogi and Pepsi are now available for adoption. I could write 101 posts about why this is the most soul destroying decision Iโ€™ve ever had to make, but the truth is, itโ€™s not about me, itโ€™s about finding these two amazing dogs the home they deserve.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Yogi is a 10 year old Border Collie x Cattle Dog (she has been embarked DNA tested).

๐Ÿคช Yogi is a fast thinker, learns incredibly easily, lives for tug of war and is one of the most perceptive dogs Iโ€™ve ever had the pleasure of owning. In fact, I often say she is human in a dogs body! She is affectionate loyal and loves creature comforts like a snuggly bed.

โ˜๐Ÿฝ Yogi doesnโ€™t love storms (with lightening and loud thunder) however we have worked a lot on this and are at a pure management stage. During a storm she prefers to be inside with her person on a bed. We utilise a storm jacket and Bach Rescue Remedy which does a great job of keeping her chill.

๐Ÿคฉ Her favourite trick is to retrieve an item from a cupboard. This can be easily translated to a beer from the fridge ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Pepsi is as Labrador as you can get! She is 9 years old.

๐Ÿฅฐ The only thing Pepsi wants in the entire world, is to love and be loved. Literally. She asks for absolutely nothing and is happy to be by your side hanging out or licking your knee caps.

๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿฝ Pepsi loves to swim, retrieve rocks and other items from a river bed and loves to learn.

๐Ÿคฉ Her favourite trick is BANG in which she executes the SLOWEST death of the century.

Being seniors, the girls donโ€™t ask for much. However, they are still fit and active and enjoy walks daily. They also like bush hikes and adventures to the beach.

โœ… Their basic obedience includes: SIT, DROP, COME, LEAVE IT, LAY DOWN, MIDDLE, LOOSE LEAD WALKING. They are crate trained, bed trained and happy to follow rules and boundaries once they know what they are. They have a reinforcement marker and utilise release cues.

โœ… They are excellent cafe dogs and will just hang out at your feet. They love camping and will happily share a swag with you too.

๐Ÿ• Both are dog neutral. Pepsi can get overstimulated if super over excitable dogs approach in an obnoxious way.

๐Ÿˆ Both love cats and have lived with a cat for a number of years.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿฝโ€๐Ÿคโ€๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผ They love all people including kids.

๐Ÿ– They have been raw fed for the entirety of their life and a condition of their new home will be that this is maintained.

๐Ÿ’…๐Ÿผ They are regularly maintained with nail trims and brushes and tolerate it well.

โœ… They are happy to be left at home or love to come with you.

โ˜บ๏ธ To be honest, they are two of the most easiest dogs Iโ€™ve had the pleasure of owning.

PLEASE SHARE

Hi friends, Flo here
New Year's Eve is a fun time for people but it can be a horrible night for many pets. Every year thousands of animals get lost after panicking during fireworks. So it is best to be prepared.

* Please keep your pet securely contained for the entire night โ€“ a fence may not be enough to keep a determined, panicking pet from escaping during fireworks. Scaling fences can also lead to serious injury for dogs. Ideally you should keep your pet inside, in a secure room where they can neither escape nor hurt themselves. It is important that you donโ€™t tie up your dog at the collar, as in a moment of panic he or she could try to get away causing serious injury.

* Stay home with your pet, or if this is not possible, leave your pet with someone familiar who will be staying in on NYE.

* Create a safe place in the house where your dog can hear a radio or TV. Play calming or classical music. Leave on television and radio in different rooms to help mask the noise.

* Flashes of light and noise are scary to pets, so close all windows and blinds to help block out noise and light.

* make sure your pet has a current identification tag and that your microchip details are up to date

* Thoroughly exercise your dog before dusk to help tire them out,. Also, a walk before the fireworks allows your pet the opportunity to go to the toilet

* Before the fireworks and parties begin give your dogs their evening meal, a full tummy also makes them happy and more sleepy!

* Try an Anxiety Wrap or Thundershirt. These are a type of jacket that have a calming effect on many dogs. They may be used for dogs who are fearful of storms, fireworks and travel or general anxiety. The jacket applies a gentle but constant pressure on the dogs torso which has a calming effect on the over stimulated nervous system

* If you know your pet is especially anxious, it is advisable to speak to your vet regarding any medication you could give to help them stay calm. However, this should be a last resort and must only be undertaken after a professional consultation.

Happy New Yearโ€™s Eve friends!

"He's afraid of X, so he must have been abused by/with X."

In rescue, a lot of dogs come into care with unknown histories. Many of these dogs present with specific or generalized fear and anxiety.

It can be easy - so, SO easy - to attach a story to their behaviour. In fact, it's becoming increasingly common for people to adopt dogs BECAUSE of their story. The more tragic, the better.

The problem with this is that it tends to freeze dogs into their neuroses. Their owner becomes so attached to the story, so emotionally invested, that they themselves cannot move past it. When the owner gets stuck, so does the dog.

Then the story becomes an excuse.

He's aggressive to the postman because one must have abused him.

He's leash reactive to other dogs because he was a 'bait dog'.

He runs from us when we grab the fly swat because someone has hit him with it.

In most cases, these behaviours are caused from a lack of experience in the critical period of socialization. Their inexperience can present itself as fear, anxiety, stress and aggression; mechanisms they develop over time to cope.

But what exactly caused their rescued dogs behaviour is irrelevant. It's a fools errand to try to figure it out; an addictive oxytocin-fueled quest to justify a lack of action.

He's afraid of men? Make men = good things. He runs from the fly swatter? Pick the damn thing up and throw the dog a handful of steak a few times. See what happens.

When we adopt a dog, we're making a commitment to BETTER their life. Holding on to their past is doing the opposite. Show them they're in a better place by overcoming their problems, not nurturing them.
