💥Here’s our top 7 tips on how to select Angus Bulls for a Hot Tropical Northern Climate💥
It’s surprising how adaptable Bos-Taurus can be, if they have been raised in the right areas and acclimatised correctly they can handle hot and dry or humid climates.
1️⃣ Make sure that you are buying them from an area where they were born and raised in 40 degree heat summers, a range of 40-46 degrees is perfect.
2️⃣ The bulls have to be grass fed in the paddock, run like steers. That way they have maintained a steady weight gain. Grain promotes too much growth in a short period and can hurt their growing joints and shorten their longevity, while affecting their semen and making the transition back to grass difficult.
3️⃣ The larger the paddocks the better, 300-500 acres minimum. You want them constantly moving, that way they stay fit and lay down muscle instead of fat.
4️⃣ Large mobs are a must, at least 50-100 bulls, the competition and fighting keeps them moving and keeps them fit as well! The fitter the bull in the 40 degree heat the better chance they have acclimatising further north.
5️⃣ Blooding twice, once at weaning as well as once they get their main inoculations is not overkill! It bolsters their immunity to tick fever as well as picks up the few bulls that may not have taken the first time.
6️⃣ Pick a bull with the right structure to suit a tougher climate. You want an easy traveling bull with good feet and a good angle of back leg (not too straight).
7️⃣ Pick a stud that puts a lot of pressure on their cow herd. Especially in regard to fertility coming out of a drought. If your first calving heifers are coming out of a drought with a poor body score, have had minimal maintenance and are back in calf then that fertility and drought resistance will follow on through to their sons!
