With the extreme heat we’re experiencing, it’s important to remember how quickly a parked car can become dangerous for pets. On a 25°C day, the temperature inside a car can reach 35°C in just five minutes. After 10 minutes, it can climb to around 45°C, and within 20–30 minutes it may exceed 50–60°C. These temperatures are life-threatening for animals, and cracking the windows does very little to keep them safe.
Before bringing your dog along in the car please be aware of the potential dangers. The heat and discomfort can quickly become overwhelming. It can be even harder for certain breeds of dogs, who cannot cool themselves effectively as others. For all dogs left in hot cars their body temperature can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke, and worse.
So please, if you can’t keep your dog with you and cool, the safest choice is to leave them at home and avoid the risk altogether.
