With the extreme heat we’re experiencing, it’s important to remember how quickly a parked car can become dangerous for pets. On a 25°C day, the temperature inside a car can reach 35°C in just five minutes. After 10 minutes, it can climb to around 45°C, and within 20–30 minutes it may exceed 50–60°C. These temperatures are life-threatening for animals, and cracking the windows does very little to keep them safe.
Before bringing your dog along in the car please be aware of the potential dangers. The heat and discomfort can quickly become overwhelming. It can be even harder for certain breeds of dogs, who cannot cool themselves effectively as others. For all dogs left in hot cars their body temperature can rise rapidly, leading to heatstroke, and worse.
So please, if you can’t keep your dog with you and cool, the safest choice is to leave them at home and avoid the risk altogether.

Therapy Bunny, Bugs, on the job, comforting little Cloudy who has Geriatric Vestibular Disease. This is a condition that affects balance, with symptoms such as head tilt, loss of coordination, walking in circles, falling, and abnormal eye movements called nystagmus. It will commonly cause nausea and vomiting and is, in a way similar to vertigo in humans.
It can be an alarming condition, as it usually has a very sudden onset. It is also often mistaken for a stroke by pet owners. Thankfully it is almost always a temporary condition, with most dogs improving after a few days to a few weeks.
All dogs presenting with similar signs definitely require immediate attention from your vet. With treatment revolving around supportive care, often anti nausea medication and lots of TLC and time.

With the rise in temperatures, now is the time to be vigilant as we are starting to see snakes out and about. Snakes can often be found in unexpected places, even if you live in a more suburban area. This means your pet may encounter one.
It is important to know the signs of snake bite.
These can include: dilated pupils, drooling ,panting excessively, trembling, weakness or wobbliness in back legs, lethargy, vomiting and collapse.
These signs are due to the potent toxins in the snake’s venom, which can cause muscle paralysis, muscle damage and even damage to red blood cells amongst other things. If you suspect your pet has been bitten, in contact with a snake or showing any of these signs, please don’t delay calling your vet, it can be a life or death situation.

Storm season is here. Some of our furkids get so scared with thunder and lightning, it’s time to do some planning and think about how to ease their stress.
They can detect changes in barometric pressure and static electricity can cause discomfort and anxiety. They hear at much higher frequencies than humans and can hear storms way before we can.
So many pets go missing during storms. Making sure their microchip details are up to date makes reuniting them with you much easier.
Keeping them somewhere secure is important. A safe indoor space is ideal but if they must be outside, check fencing is in good order, try to provide a covered area with bedding to provide somewhere for them to feel safe.
If you feel your pet needs a little more support, then there are medications that can help to ease their anxiety. Just book an appointment to have a chat about the options.
Being prepared will help lesson the stress on you and your pet.

Happy Halloween! Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe so everyone can have a spooktacular night.
Keep all lollies and chocolate out of reach of your pets, these are highly toxic, remind family and guests not to offer them to your pets.
Keep an eye on your decorations, pets may want to play with them and they can pose choking, entanglement or burn risks.
Ensure your pets are safe if they get over excited and may bolt with strangers tapping on the front door.
Enjoy tricking and treating with your family.

With the weather heating up and the summer heat just round the corner it’s important to think about preparations to keep our furkids cool and happy during the hot days.
Water is one of the most important things, keep water bowls full and consider getting an extra couple to make sure they never run out.
Shade, providing a covered area that can protect them from the direct sun.
Exercise at the cooler part of the day, try not to let them go crazy in the middle of the day.
Cooling mats can be great for them to lie on and chill out.
The biggest one is please never leave your dogs in the car. The temperature can skyrocket at a rapid speed, leaving windows cracked a little is not enough to prevent the danger of overheating and possible death.
If you have a pet showing signs of overheating, excessive panting, drooling, red or pale gums and tongue, lethargy, stumbling, vomiting, diarrhoea, and rapid breathing, call your vet as it can be an emergency.

Our last visit of fabulous RSPCA Gympie cats are nearly all adopted! How wonderful is that. Sheeran and Eden will be available very soon. Little Pepper is timid but will warm up and be a loving family member for someone who is willing to offer time, space and patience.
Its wonderful for us to see that so many people are happy to offer homes to all sorts of cats, from kittens to older ones and the shy and timid. They are all worthy of love.
