One of the hardest things is to say no to our furkids when we are having something to eat. They turn those eyes on you, and before you realise it, you are handing over half of your food! However, being overweight can cause serious health problems for them.
Joint problems: the extra weight puts strain on joints, this can reduce their mobility, cause arthritis and lessen their quality of life.
Respiratory Issues: the extra weight can strain the heart and lungs, leading to breathing problems and increased risk of heart disease
Diabetes: they become more prone to insulin resistance, which can lead to diabetes.
Reduced Life Expectancy: They can be at risk of having a shortened lifespan, caused by organ damage and the increased risk of various diseases.
So, think belly rubs not belly bulges!

How is it that our pets seem to know when we are going to take them to see a vet?
They are very attuned to you and your body language and routines, they will pick up subtle changes in your voice, behaviour and body language, which they will associate with going to the vet.
If they are sick or in pain, they will sense your emotions, fear, anxiety and stress, they can also notice if you are being more gentle or protective of them. They will know this car trip is different to one going to the park or beach.
If you pet is stressed at coming into the clinic, we encourage you to bring them in for a social visit, when you are coming in to collect something, or just passing. Having drop in visits where they get treats and pats, praise will soon get them loving coming into the vet.
There also medications, such as sedation and anti-anxiety medications that will lessen their stress level and make the vet a less scary place.

Separation anxiety can be caused by many factors. The most common being separation from their owners, which can cause a high level of distress. Other causes can be a sudden change in routine, suddenly being alone when they have been used to spending time with a human or another dog, a new home or a bad experience after being alone.
Some signs are, barking or howling excessively, pacing, walking in circle, chewing furniture, scratching doors, having toilet accidents in the house or if outside, trying to escape from the yard or digging.
It can be treated but requires a high level of commitment. Some things to try are behaviour modification with a dog trainer, walks which will burn off energy and bond with you, interactive puzzles, such as, snuffle mats, puzzles, treat-dispensing toys, and slow feeders, turning on the TV. Also, products like Adaptil replicate these natural pheromones and are regularly used to help ease and relax dogs.
Compression shirts, like thunder shirts, deliver a ‘gentle hug’ for your dog, the pressure of the shirt has a calming effect on the nervous system.
If it persists then book a time to chat to your vet, because if left untreated, separation anxiety will continue to exist in you and your dog’s life.

Friday 13th is a good day to look at the discrimination against black-coloured animals. Historically, people have associated black with evil, these superstitions have led to unwarranted discrimination leading to them being overlooked in because they are perceived as less friendly.
They often face longer stays in shelters and with rescue groups, black dogs and cats are overlooked in favour of lighter colours.
This Friday 13th lets appreciate the beauty of black coloured pets and value them for who they are, wonderful, loving, loyal family members.
We would love you to share a photo of your beautiful black pet with us!

This is our receptionist’s Jack Russell, Cloudy. He is a 13 year old, healthy, super active little dude, however his one downfall is his teeth.
Just like some people, some dogs just don’t have good teeth, and Cloudy is one of those dogs. He is not a big chewer either, he also tends to inhale dry food, so dental food also does not help.
This is only one year’s buildup of tartare, so it’s important for him to have a scale and polish every year. It helps to keep him healthy and prevents dental disease and other health issues and most importantly, gives him fresher breath for lots of kisses!
