So, the verdict is in on our new hay options.
They’re both so yummy it’s hard to choose! But, the Prairie is the winner on Popsicle’s taste board - which is probably explained a bit with the feed test.
Watch her video for her ongoing deliberations though 🤣

What if we told you there was a number on your feed test to help you determine the palatability of your hay that is not the sugar levels?
Although we look for a slightly more mature crop with our low sugar options, the hay you buy still needs to be palatable for your horse to eat it - so you don’t see all your hard earned money sprawled over the floor….
Do you know how your supplier tests their hay? How big their samples are? How often they test?
In this video we walk you through Neutral Detergent Fibre and hay testing. Sit down and join us this morning for our third and final video in our “How to read a feed test” series ☕️
If you have any questions, please pop them in the comments - we’re more than happy to chat or point you in the right direction for more research 🧐

So, we’ve learnt how to read the sugar and starch levels in our hay - but what if I told you low sugar hay can still have high calories and protein? Yep, you heard right - sugars aren’t the only thing we look for in a feed test!
If you have a horse that is struggling with their weight, perhaps they have EMS or a similar diagnosis - you need low calories too!
In this next episode, we talk about Horse Digestible Energy and Protein Levels. Sit down and join us with your coffee for this short video this morning ☕️

Have you ever looked at a feed test and thought "what on earth am I supposed to be looking at here?" - so many numbers, acronyms, percentages...
But you have a laminitic prone horse and you've been told you need to feed "low sugar hay" - but what does that even mean? How do you know the "tested" hay that you've bought is indeed low sugar? 🤯
We've decided to make a series of short videos to help you read these feed tests, so you can be equipped with knowledge when purchasing hay for your beloved equine friend.
In this first video we talk about sugars and starch - what numbers you need to pay attention to, what thresholds those numbers should be under and the reasoning behind it!
So if you can spare 4 minutes of your Saturday morning, we highly recommend that you sit down with your coffee and give this video a listen ☕
Share with your friends, it’s valuable to be able to read these tests ❤️

Poppy has hay pillows of our different tested low sugar options all around her track because we have limited trees and posts (but don’t worry she has a lovely big shelter for those hot days!).
Our tested low sugar teff is always her mainstay and favourite. We think this is because it’s steamed and double conditioned making it lovely and clean and green for her to enjoy. Our teff is the option we recommend for our fussier four hooved customers who have metabolic issues because we know it’s the tastiest! We also take great comfort in knowing it is low in starch at just 1.9% (we never sell hay to laminitic clients over 3% starch), WSC is 5.8%, ESC is 5.2% and Digestible energy is just 7.35 Mj/kg (making it a great diet option).
So, although our teff is lovely and green it’s the perfect option for your four hooved friends needing low sugar diets. But do be warned, if you have a gutsy horse you may wish to explore the rest of our great low sugar range, which are palatable but just not as tasty 😋
Which of our hays does your horse love the most? 😍😋

🐴 LAMINITIS PREVENTION TIP 🐴
Any farmer will be quick to tell you what pests horses can be with their selective grazing tendencies… they are essentially the cherry pickers of the grazing kingdom. In a paddock they will walk around and find the most luscious grass to gorge themselves on, often eating down particular areas. So, with a nifty bit of electrified tape you can control the size of their grazing area. By creating a small strip or cell you restrict the volume available AND you restrict the ability to select the best bits - they will have to eat the longer fibrous grass as they get through the section. Long fibrous grass often equals less sugar and healthier grass while the grass they cherry pick is often less healthy and higher in sugar! AND you then have more grass resting at any one time which is also beneficial for the quality of your pasture!
Have you heard of a track system? Tracks are created in paddocks by essentially creating laneways for your horse to move through rather that allowing them to roam the whole paddock. These laneways encourage the horse to move further throughout their day, and with the inclusion of poles, feeding stations, natural obstacles and friends, tracks can be an enriching way to keep your horses happy and healthy and optimise your paddock space.
We've got loads of fencing supplies, both temporary and permanent options. Come see us if you want to discuss your track ideas!
You can find some of our fencing supplies here: https://www.canberrastockfeeds.com.au/shop/fencing/QJUJAVD373VCM4CJ4P4A4RHG AND we have plenty more in store!
