❔Have you found a roaming dog?
❓Do you know what to do?
I’ve seen a lot of lost dogs over the Christmas/new year break being found, either from escaping from the storms, young pups just escaping their New Yards etc..
‼️Important to remember ‼️
❌ you shouldn’t feed the found dog - why? You don’t know if they are on a specific diet, if they have intolerances or it could be potentially dangerous if the dog has any resource guarding issues - you could get bitten or worse..
✔️ definitely offer them fresh water
❌ don’t post the colour of their collar/ post photos of their whole body if you can help it - why? There is alot of people out there that can “claim” it’s their dog and the dog could end up in the wrong hands, or the dog might even be stolen you never know.
✔️ definitely post that you have found a dog, in what area etc but no address, collars showing, full pictures or any extra info.. the owner will be Abel to give you full proof that’s their dog via vet paperwork, photos, microchip, and details of colar/markings
✔️ take them to the closest vet surgery for a scan of the microchip.. this is the best way to find the dogs rightful owner - however note for everyone to check your dogs microchip details are up to date!
❌ don’t tie the dog up if you can’t be there to supervise it - why? It could potentially choke, chew the lead off, get tangled and cause more issues. Most dogs are already stressed.
✔️ definitely restrain them if you can (supervised) and if you cannot do so ask a neighbour to watch the dog or take it straight to the vet/pound (council)
❌ don’t just let them in with your dogs and hope for the best, protect your dog and put them inside or whatever way you can keep them separate.. you never know what the other dog could do, or your dog for that matter..
❌ don’t assume anything about the dogs personality even if it seems friendly, you might just touch it where it’s sore and you risk being bitten.
‼️ be cautious handling any dog unknown, even if you do know the dog they might be extremely stressed and dogs are fight or flight animals so they could potentially be dangerous. As much as we love all dogs and need to protect them off the road etc, we also need to be responsible and cautious for your own safety 🙏
🙏 on a good note, it is lovely to see how many people do actually stop and try to protect these missing dogs, and to provide them with safety until their owner is found
Pic just because ❤️🐾
