πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† FIREWORKS WARNING - CRACKER NIGHT πŸŽ‡πŸŽ†

Cracker Night in Hobart - prepare your dogs with using over the counter products such as Adaptil Spray for short-term anti-anxiety relief, or have their Trazodone anti-anxiety medication on board. Both options must be used 1-2 hours in advance.

Some further helpful tips from RSPCA Tasmania

A dog can hear 10 times better than a human. Fireworks typically explode at a staggering 145-150 decibels - as loud as a jet engine at close quarters - so these explosions can be frightening and even harmful.

Frightened animals may flee their homes trying to escape the startling and confusing blasts. It’s not uncommon for dogs to break through windows and screen doors or dig under fences in a panic. Sometimes, they end up lost or even get hit by cars.

If you can, it’s best to stay home with your pet so you can be there to reassure them. If you’re not going to be at home, make sure you provide them with a safe, secure and comfortable environment. Whenever possible, bring your pet indoors. If your pet has ongoing trouble with loud noises, you might like to speak to your vet to discuss all your options.

Here are some simple steps to minimise firework stress in pets and other animals:

πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Ensure your pets are wearing ID tags and their microchip details are up to date.
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† If you know a storm is coming, or fireworks are planned, ensure your pets are exercised and well fed before the storm starts.
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Leave the TV or radio on to mask any sounds
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Remove any sharp objects that might cause injury to a panicking animal
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Birds and pocket pets like guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets can also become distressed from fireworks. Bring their cages or hutches inside if possible and provide extra bedding or cover their cage with a thick sheet to allow them to hide.
Horses are particularly vulnerable to bolting when exposed to fireworks, so make sure to securely stable them away from firework noises.
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Wildlife can also be affected by the unexpected noises and bright lights fireworks produce. Contact Bonorong 0447 264 625
πŸŽ‡πŸŽ† Remember that firework debris is toxic if ingested by animals.

If your pet does become lost, contact your local council and nearby care centres like
AHVEC - After hours veterinary emergency centre.
If you find a pet, contact the owner if they have a tag, contact council if they have a council tag, or take them to a local care centre. Social media can also help reunite lost pets with their families. The Tasmanian Lost Pets Register on Facebook is a good place to start. Tasmanian Lost Pet Register - TLPR

Introducing our latest rescue, feral foster kitten Georgie. Georgie came to us at about 15wks old, petrified of humans, hissing, biting and scratching at the slightest movement, any eye contact was the scariest thing! Georgie got along with our permanent cats Finn and Gooby, and our two dogs Cooper and Sophie right from word go. It was just the pesky humans of the house he couldn't stand.

Georgie was a very timid little boy and would try to hide in his crate under his bed, and he wasn't showing any signs of normal cat behaviour - that is, until we got a group of 8 week old foster kittens!

Georgie has made incredible progress over the last month and has really come out of his shell. He now plays and wrestles with all of the cats and kittens, climbs the cat tower, the table and counter tops, uses scratching posts and joins in the morning chorus of meowing for his breakfast, leading me back to his crate where he sits patiently for his bowl.

We are so incredibly proud of his progress, and any moment of him sitting on the couch or walking past the humans or sniffing our hands makes our hearts sing. It is still going to be a bit of a journey with Georgie but he is growing to be a beautiful kitty 😻

Happy Halloween! Did you know that some toxins our pets may encounter today could be just as scary as your costume? Keep your pet safe by making sure you’re familiar with these common Halloween dangers.

🍫 Chocolate - One of the most common calls we receive! The darker the chocolate the more harmful it will be to your pet. Ingestion might lead to a fast and irregular heart- beat, changes to blood pressure and excitability.

🍭 Xylitol - Sugarless lollies, chewing gum and baked treats may contain the sweetener xylitol that causes low blood sugar (due to insulin release) and liver damage in dogs.

πŸ‡ Grapes, sultanas, and raisins - Can cause kidney failure in dogs. Be mindful that grape products can be β€˜hidden’ in baked goods like breads and muffins.

πŸ§ͺGlow-sticks - Popular with trick-or-treaters, some pets (especially cats) chew on them, releasing the bitter material inside which is an irritant that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.

If you have any pet poison β€˜scares’ today, please phone us on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) immediately for advice. You can also visit animalpoisons.com.au/stay-up-to-date to subscribe to our mailing list and receive updates and alerts directly to your inbox.

The Animal Poisons Helpline is a registered animal charity and is the only free animal poisons centre in the world. The continuity of the service relies on the support of generous pet owners like yourself. If you feel that this service is a valuable to Australian and New Zealand pet owners, please support it today by leaving a small gift at animalpoisons.com.au/supportus. All donations assist and are very much appreciated.
