Who has met Aella?

She belongs to one of our Nurses and comes into work with her.

She is learning to be the Clinic cat, she mostly sleeps all day at the moment 😻

She can not wait to be able to start greeting everyone, but for now she is keeping by her mums side and only exploring when no danger is around.

Fleas

Fleas are common external parasites in dogs and cats, causing discomfort and potentially serious health issues if left untreated.

Here's what you need to know about fleas in pets:

Signs of Fleas

1. Scratching and Biting: Pets may scratch, bite, or lick themselves excessively, especially around the tail, neck, and belly.
2. Hair Loss and Skin Irritation: Persistent scratching can lead to bald spots, redness, or inflamed skin.
3. Flea Dirt: Black or brown specks, resembling pepper, may be visible on your pet’s skin or fur. This is flea f***s, which turns reddish-brown when wet (from digested blood).
4. Live Fleas: Tiny, fast-moving insects (reddish-brown in color) may be visible on the pet, particularly in thinly-haired areas.
5. Restlessness: Pets may seem agitated or unable to settle due to irritation.
6. Pale Gums (in severe cases): A sign of flea-induced anemia, especially in kittens, puppies, or small pets with heavy infestations.

Dangers of Fleas

1. Allergic Reactions: Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD) is a common condition caused by sensitivity to flea saliva, resulting in intense itching and skin issues.
2. Anemia: Severe infestations, especially in young or small pets, can lead to blood loss and anemia.
3. Tapeworms: Fleas can carry tapeworm larvae, which pets may ingest when grooming.
4. Bacterial Infections: Scratching can cause wounds, increasing the risk of secondary infections.

How to Treat and Prevent Fleas

Treatment

1. Topical Treatments: Spot-on products (e.g., fipronil, imidacloprid, selamectin) are effective against fleas and ticks.
2. Oral Medications: Chewable tablets or pills (e.g., afoxolaner, fluralaner) provide systemic flea control.
3. Flea Shampoos and Sprays: Useful for immediate relief but may need regular application.
4. Environmental Control: Vacuum carpets, furniture, and pet bedding thoroughly. Use flea sprays or foggers in severe cases.
5. Veterinary Guidance: Always consult a vet for severe infestations or if your pet is allergic.

Prevention

1. Year-round Prevention: Use veterinarian-recommended flea preventatives regularly.
2. Grooming and Hygiene: Regularly bathe and brush your pets.
3. Household Cleaning: Wash pet bedding and vacuum living areas frequently.
4. Outdoor Care: Treat yards with pet-safe products to reduce flea populations.

When to See a Vet

• If your pet shows signs of a severe infestation, anemia, or allergic reactions.
• If over-the-counter treatments don’t work.
• For long-term flea prevention tailored to your pet's needs.

VET TALK TUESDAY

CAN I CATCH WORMS FROM MY PET?

Intestinal worms in dogs, cats, puppies and kittens are very common, and they can cause some serious illness in humans. “Allwormers” from veterinary clinics control infection in dogs and cats for the five main intestinal parasites which are:

• Roundworms

- Mainly from faeces, causes nodules in humans which contain larvae of the parasite.
- Nodules occur in liver, lungs, kidneys and brain, sometimes affects eyes requiring removal.
- Soil can be contaminated with parasite eggs, pregnant and lactating bi***es often heavily infected. Soils in parks and playgrounds can be contaminated where children play. Also infection via contaminated cat litter boxes if hygiene poor.

• Whipworms

- Direct transmission between dogs and humans is rare because the species differ..

• Hookworms

- Infection in humans causes “cutaneous larvae migrans” – an intensely itchy red and inflamed eruption in human skin. Lungs can also be invaded.
- Believed approx 50% infections occur at the beach.
- Humans can also get enteritis from adult hookworms. Signs include abdominal pain.
- Humans are infected by larvae via the skin (barefeet in gardens and beaches, parks and playgrounds).

• Tapeworms

- Develops in fleas and lice. Pets and children infected by ingestion of insects. Tapeworm develops in the gut of humans. Tapeworm segments exit our pets and humans from a**s in the faeces, and also empty eggs which can be ingested. Young children are particularly at risk. The eggs hatch, embryo enters wall of intestine and migrates to organs such as liver, skeletal muscle and heart.

• Hydatid (Echinococcus)

-The hydatid tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus) poses a more serious risk compared to common tapeworms like Dipylidium caninum. It can infect humans and cause a condition known as hydatid disease or echinococcosis, which can have severe health consequences.
- When humans ingest Echinococcus eggs, the larvae can travel through the bloodstream and form hydatid cysts in organs such as the liver, lungs, brain, or other tissues.

Symptoms: The symptoms depend on the location and size of the cysts and may include:
▪ Abdominal pain or swelling.
▪ Cough, chest pain, or difficulty breathing (if cysts are in the lungs).
▪ Neurological issues or headaches (if cysts are in the brain).

Complications: If a cyst ruptures, it can cause severe allergic reactions or secondary infections.

Many supermarket brands only cover 2 or 3 of the parasites, commonly leaving out tapeworm coverage. Check all labels to ensure your pet is covered.

Don’t forget that tapeworms are also connected with the flea cycle – so if you are seeing either worms in poo, eggs around bottoms, or fleas on your pets, you must worm and flea treat your pet to break the cycle.

We recommend good personal hygiene at home, washing hands after playing or handling pets, plus regular intestinal worming of adult pets every 3 months (more often for farm pets, pregnant or lactating bi***es, puppies and kittens).

Please speak to your pharmacist about products for intestinal parasite control for the family.

ITS STAFF PET'S SUNDAY!!!!

This is Stanley the golden retriever.

He is Dr Sean’s goofball, and in true goldy form, he must always be carrying something in his mouth (an excellent retriever!)
His favourite toy to carry around is his rainbow monkey.

At home Stan is a big couch potato. He is very precious (and maybe a bit spoilt), as he loves to sit on the couch and have his paws massaged at night!

He is not the bravest boy.
Stan hates wheelie bins, they’re scary, and has even been known to be afraid of his own shadow.

The beach is Stanley’s happy place, he turns into a goldfish trying to swim out as far as he can, and he loves jumping over waves.

30/12/2024

Fireworks can be extremely frightening for pets, especially dogs and cats, due to the loud noises and bright flashes of light, which can cause them to become anxious, stressed, and even try to escape, so it's crucial to keep them indoors in a safe, quiet space when fireworks are being set off; always ensure they are properly identified with a microchip and current contact information in case they do manage to get out.
Key points to remember about fireworks and pets:

Keep them inside:

Never leave your pet outside during fireworks, even if they are leashed; bring them indoors and close windows and curtains to muffle the noise.

Create a safe space:

Designate a quiet, comfortable area like a crate or a room with their favorite blanket and toys where they can feel secure.

Distraction techniques:

Play calming music, turn on the TV, or provide engaging toys to distract them from the sounds.

Calming aids:

Consider using pheromone diffusers or calming treats specifically designed to reduce anxiety in pets.

Stay calm:

Act normally around your pet to help them feel less anxious.

Vet consultation:

If your pet has extreme fear of loud noises, talk to your veterinarian about possible calming medication options.

Potential dangers of fireworks for pets:

Hearing damage:
The loud noises from fireworks can harm a pet's sensitive hearing.

Escape attempts:
Frightened pets may try to run away, potentially getting lost or injured.

Physical distress:
Pets may exhibit behaviors like panting, pacing, hiding, or excessive vocalization due to anxiety.

Keep your pets safe and have a Happy New Years 🥳

YAY its that time of week again!!!

Staff pet Sunday.

This Sunday we have, Buddy 🥰

Buddy is a Maltese Sh*tzu and has just turned 12.

His family lives in his world, he definitely is the boss. He demands walks and chicken sticks daily.

His favourite past time is sitting on the lounge by the front door watching the world go by.
He's well known by the posty and delivery people as he lets out lots of barks to greet them 🤣

He loves his biscuit time every night with his dad.

When no-one is around he's the biggest cuddliest sook and loves sleeping in with whichever family member stays in bed the longest.

His bark is worst than his bite as Dr Michael and Dr Nat has removed all his teeth over the years. 🤣🤣

Buddy belongs to one of our amazing receptionist’s, Leah 🥰
