🎄 Ten Technical Tips A’Tuning 🎄

These evidence-based tips help fine-tune diets for gut health, performance and metabolic safety.

10 Technical Feeding Tips:

1️⃣ Fibre first
Feed 1.5–2% of bodyweight/day in forage to support gut health and motility.

2️⃣ Check Ca:P ratio
Aim for 1.5:1–3:1 to support bone health and mineral absorption.

3️⃣ Limit starch per meal
Keep starch

🎄 Nine Nutrition Myths A’Nulling 🎄

There’s a lot of feeding advice floating around. Let’s clear up some common nutrition myths and replace them with evidence-based truth.

9 Common Nutrition Myths Explained:

1️⃣ Myth: “Grain is the best energy for all horses.”
Truth: Many horses perform better on fibre and oil for slow-release energy.

2️⃣ Myth: “Big feeds build topline.”
Truth: Muscle comes from correct protein balance, quality nutrition and training, not oversized meals.

3️⃣ Myth: “Horses can graze or eat unlimited hay safely.”
Truth: Rich hay or pasture can lead to obesity and laminitis in good doers. Quantity and quality both matter.

4️⃣ Myth: “Adding oil makes horses hot.”
Truth: Oil provides cool energy compared to starch-heavy feeds.

5️⃣ Myth: “Pasture or hay alone is enough.”
Truth: Forage is the foundation, but it rarely supplies a fully balanced diet. Many horses need added vitamins, minerals, protein or energy.

6️⃣ Myth: “Treats are harmless.”
Truth: Too many sugary treats can upset gut health and increase laminitis risk.

7️⃣ Myth: “Changing feed quickly is fine.”
Truth: Sudden changes can trigger colic. Always transition over 7–14 days.

8️⃣ Myth: “You can tell sugar levels by looking.”
Truth: Appearance is misleading. Only hay testing or pasture analysis confirms sugar levels — especially important for laminitis-prone horses.

9️⃣ Myth: “More supplements = better performance.”
Truth: Over-supplementing can cause imbalances or toxicity. Base supplements on diet analysis and actual needs.

🎄 Eight Electrolytes Enhancing 🎄

Electrolytes can be a powerful tool in hot weather- when they’re used correctly. These eight tips help support hydration, recovery and overall balance.

8 Electrolyte Essentials:

1️⃣ Start with salt
Plain salt fed daily helps maintain thirst drive and baseline electrolyte balance.

2️⃣ Pair with water
Electrolytes only work if your horse has access to plenty of fresh, cool water.

3️⃣ Split the dose
Divide electrolyte supplements before and after work for better absorption.

4️⃣ Match to sweat loss
Heavy sweaters need more support; light work may only require salt.

5️⃣ Avoid over-sweet mixes
Some electrolyte products are very high in sugar — always check the label.

6️⃣ Offer a second bucket
A lightly flavoured water bucket (apple juice or soaked Fibre Safe water) can encourage drinking.

7️⃣ Travel smart
Horses lose electrolytes during transport, especially in hot weather - dose before and after longer trips.

8️⃣ Don’t skip rest days
Even on non-work days, horses in hot conditions still need salt and hydration support.

🎄 Five Feeds A’Fixing 🎄

Good feeding isn’t complicated, it’s about consistency, accuracy, and knowing your horse. These five golden rules support calmer guts, better condition, and safer performance year-round.

5 Golden Feeding Rules:

1️⃣ Fibre first
Forage is the foundation of gut health, hydration and steady energy.

2️⃣ Measure feed by weight
Scoops vary- weighing feed ensures accuracy and avoids overfeeding.

3️⃣ Keep routines consistent
Horses thrive on routine. Regular feeding times support digestion and behaviour.

4️⃣ Match feed to horse type & workload
Age, breed, condition and workload all matter- feed what your horse needs.

5️⃣ Introduce changes slowly (7–14 days)
Gradual changes protect the hindgut and reduce digestive upsets. Reliable routines = calmer guts.

🎄 Four Facts A’Feeding 🎄

Summer routines can get busy, but your horse thrives on consistency. A little planning goes a long way in keeping feeding safe and effective during the heat.

4 Summer Feeding Facts to Remember:

1️⃣ Plan ahead for party days
If you’ll be out for Christmas lunch or away from home, prep feeds early or arrange a reliable helper so your horse’s schedule stays consistent.

2️⃣ Keep feed cool & dry
Summer heat + humidity = higher mould risk. Store feed in sealed bins and away from direct sunlight to keep it fresh.

3️⃣ Add a splash of water
Mixing a small amount of water into hard feed can support hydration and reduce dust, especially useful in hot, dry conditions.

4️⃣ Electrolytes for extra sweat
If your horse is working or travelling in summer heat, electrolytes help maintain fluid and mineral balance.
