I freaking LOVE camping with my dog.
With some trips booked and long weekends coming up I wanted to share some info about camping with your dog.
It’s the adventuring, watching him explore new smells, new locations. It’s the long walks, splashing around in rivers (Gus doesn’t swim), the zooms and the all important camp fire chill sessions with yummy food and dirt on absolutely everything I own.
To achieve a peaceful existence around the camp site, even with other dogs. I built a solid foundation consisting of:
- Basic obedience, including a solid recall and long downs.
- Boundaries, including a tie outs, crate and place bed. - An off switch, so the boy rests after a stimulating day of activities.
- And play, to improve our bond, and to build play drive in new environments.
Before I even thought about taking Gus camping. I made sure these foundations were solid at home, out on bush walks, at cafes, breweries, you name it, I trained it.
It’s incredibly unfair to expect him to keep his s**t together in an environment as stimulating as the bush on a camping trip without training those foundations and teaching him about what is required and the accompanying expectations.
If you are thinking about going camping with your dog, have a think about what your behavioural expectations are and ask yourself…
Can my dog meet those expectations or will I be constantly arguing, correcting or getting frustrated at my dog?
