Don’t Dread The Dog Canine Education Dog training services, focusing on building motivation through clear communication, play & engagement Through to obedience and dog sports.

My name is Lisa and I'm the founder and trainer at Don't Dread The Dog. My specialty is developing dog and owner relationships through motivating play and engagement. Dogs and handlers learn basic life skills and real world obedience like living in the home politely, going to a cafes, and breweries. I am a member and competitor of GRC Dog sports (Gameness, Relationship & Control). My own dog Gus h

as his SR1 (Social Responsibility Level 1) Title and has points towards his Mill Race L1 Title. GRC dog sports channels the dogs, genetic drives, motivations and potential into constructive activities like Slat Mill Races (self propelling tread mills for dogs), Spring Pole, Wall climb and Weight pull, whilst teaching the dog to control that drive in the real world. Last night the Blue Mountains and Penrith got a taste of GRC Dogsports.
Myself and a few of the GRC Sydney club members met up with the Animal Wellness and Behaviour crew and clients in Penrith and we ran through some of the fundamentals of GRC.
We ran through some of the components of the Social Responsibility test, some of the dogs got to try the Mill and the Spring Pole, with great and hilarious success.
The AW&B crew and their clients have some really great dogs!
Can't wait to see what happens next. Stay tuned for some photos 😁

This weekend Gus and I had the privilege of going to Melbourne to attend the Pros & Cons seminar by Pat Stuart. Hosted by Refine Your Canine.
Pat is one of the best dog trainers in the world, both for Sport dog training and pet dog training.
We got to see some amazing dogs demonstrate Pat's pros and & cons concepts.
He taught us the importance of taking a step back and focusing on the basics. There's no value in working on step 10, when step 1 sucks.
I love attending seminars, both in person and virtual. I love networking with fellow dog people, learning and upskilling, testing and talking through concepts, and asking questions.

All I can say is GO PLAY WITH YOUR DOG ❤️

As with any field of science or research, the understanding and best practice is always evolving as more knowledge comes to the fore. In the case of things like dog training, however, you end up in a situation where some of the out of date ‘facts’ still persist, despite being thoroughly debunked...

We know this sounds like the start of a really boring engineering manual or something, but we promise it’s not too complicated and it’s more important than you may have thought! Until we went into the business, we freely admit that we didn’t spend a single braincell pondering the importance of...

2 important training things are going on in this picture,
1. Gus is wearing his muzzle
2. Gus is attached to a longline

We have been lacking in our muzzle training lately, he’s only really been wearing it in Bunnings. Which is never a fun time for him.
So, we’re working on wearing our muzzle when we go and do fun things as well.
Also, this area is an off leash area and the muzzle helps to deter off leash dogs running up to us.

The long line is there as security, should Gus decide to blow off any recalls.
His recall is pretty solid, but this is a new environment, with new smells, birds, snakes, other dogs, lizards, etc so this is my insurance policy should we encounter any one of these things and Gus decides to give me the finger.

The big fella showing off his ‘sit still so I can take a nice pic’ skills also known as a ‘sit stay’.

Last weekend we had the pleasure of going away to a family birthday and Gus got to come!
Normally weekends away with Gus consist of camping, wine tasting and going places where he can just ‘dog out’.

We knew sharing an air bnb with 3 other adults, a baby and another dog was going to be interesting.
Gus, and Marty for that matter took it in their stride. And aside from one incident where Marty the sneaky border collie took advantage of my full hands and snuck outside to play with Gus, narrowly avoiding the fresh s**t Gus just did 😅 the boys were so so good!

If it wasn’t for the training I do with Gus and the dedication of Marty’s parents who attend weekly obedience and life skills sessions, going away together would not have been possible.

So proud!

It's hard to put into words how grateful I am to have been able to see Michael Ellis over the weekend.
I have followed Michaels work since I first started training Gus a few years ago. I have watched his videos on Youtube, purchased some of his videos on Leerburg, and listened to his podcasts.
He is a legend in the dog training community, not just for his reputation as a working dog handler, trainer and competitor, but also in helping countless pet dogs in pet homes.
Michael is generous, humble, hilarious, relatable and kind.
I can't wait to start working on some of the things I've learnt.

This gorgeous boy tried the mill for the first time!

Zeike is a young, intact, male boxer.
He is A LOT of dog! Literally got out the car spinning 🤣 I wish I filmed it.

I have a soft spot for boxers, I grew up with them. So, meeting young Zeike was a hoot and I’m excited to get Zeike confidently working on the mill, we’d love to channel some of that pent up energy into something fun.
Might even see if Gus’s weight pull harness fits him 😁

Took the boy to the big city to see some lights last night.
This boy took the crowds like a champ, enjoyed some pats from some strangers (who asked politely) and showed the world what good boys can do.

VIVID is an incredibly stimulating environment with noises, people, flashing lights, city smells and critters. This kind of excursion is not for every dog, just like it’s not the kind of place every person enjoys.

Gus was exposed during his critical period of development as a pup to alot of these kinds of things. Going to site with dog dad, long days and nights at the work shop, breweries, cafes, wineries and just generally being dragged along to all the places. True socialisation.
It’s made him a very environmentally stable dog, and I am forever grateful that he is.

Don’t mind his miserable face, we were playing and we stopped for a pic 🤣

The mill is such a great tool.
It gives a dog a way to express drive, build confidence, exercise and have a blast. Look at these pups go.
All different breeds, different personalities, different upbringings, all smashing it 👏🏻

Bloody posers!
Even professionals need coaching.
Gus is very easy to work with and manage now, but I believe it's important to get different perspectives and advice from other trainers. Not only to work with my own dog, but to improve my skills as a handler which I can then use to help you and your dog.

Our session with K9 Instinct, focussed on Gus's attitude when around other dogs, sometimes it stinks, and my skills as a handler. My expectations and criteria for Gus's behaviour has changed over time and I have let him get away with things I wouldn't have previously. I have become complacent.
We are now back on track, and Gus is back to being a very good boy even in situations that are tough. We will always be a work in progress, but who isn't.

Working on skills that exercise our dogs brains is super important, particularly in this heat.
Gus and I are working on a ring toss exercise, we’ve been working on it for about a week and a half.
All we’re doing is getting Gus to bring the ring and get it as close to the stick thing as possible. Each time he gets closer he gets a reward, if he gets the ring on the stick, he gets a jackpot.

Had a fab weekend at a seminar in Vic learning a new way to communicate with our dogs.
Our dogs unfortunately dont speak human, so we have to find a way to communicate clearly what we want from our dogs.
I’m excited to start working with Gussy, teaching him cool new stuff and developing clearer communication.

Recently, a trainer took exception with my views on the combination of genetics and proper early socialization/exposure as being actually far more the cause of dogs being afraid/unsure/nervous around triggers—rather than abuse being the cause. Their response: “Genetics? Probably not often. More likely it’s that the pup or dog hasn’t been exposed to the thing scaring them.”

While we all know that dogs are often afraid/unsure/nervous around things that are novel, and thus my emphasis on proper socialization, there’s also an enormous reluctance/denial that many have embracing the hard, cold, unforgiving reality of genetics.

And I get it. If a pup or dog is dealt an unlucky and unfavorable hand genetically, it’s certainly not the dog’s fault, and it certainly feels unfair. But as sad and unfair as this genetic deal may be, it doesn’t dissolve into the ether simply because we don’t like it.

Are there things to be done, both with training and proper socialization, which can improve a pup/dog’s ability to better navigate their world? Absolutely. But is that “ceiling” of progress determined by the pup/dog’s genetics? 100%. Even if you don’t like hearing it.

Here’s the thing that very few want to honestly face: genetically robust/resilient dogs will also encounter novel things they are afraid/unsure/nervous about, but these dogs will quickly overcome these challenges. They will encounter, assess, and very quickly move on. Dogs who are less genetically robust/resilient will struggle with the same novel encounters to a far greater degree, and their ability to completely resolve their concerns and no longer be impacted by them will be determined far more by how they’re wired than by the work done with them.

Yep, all the socialization work in the world won’t make a highly unstable dog highly stable, or a moderately unstable dog perfectly stable. Whether we like it or not, the genetics trump the work.

Once again, does this mean the less lucky dogs have no room to grow, or can’t make huge strides? Of course not. But to ignore the realities that genetics play is to be extremely foolish, and delusional. One need only ask an honest breeder, or folks who have had multiple litters whether they’ve seen massive genetic/temperament variances within the same litter—things which cannot and will not be “fixed” via training and socialization. It’s also why knowledgeable and scrupulous breeders pick specific pups they think will be good fits for specific homes and specific tasks.

The genetic lottery sucks. But it’s a reality we can either honestly embrace and work with, or one we can ignore and pretend either doesn’t exist, or is far more malleable than it actually is.
