Dear Dan Andrews.

Please meet Miss Gertie.
Gertie came into my care on the 7th September 2022.
Girtie too was a victim of your Commercial Kangaroo Industry.
Her mother was shot for around $15
Girtie was ripped out of her Dead Mothers pouch, tail possibly broken at the time. Absolutely terrified and traumatised, she then went to a carer. Now I can’t get into the reasons, but she found her way to me.

I was to her, Mum.
She looked to me for comfort and security.
She craved attention and touch
I nearly lost her A few times in the first week. Her friend Murphy who’s mum was also killed for $15, he died.
His body shut down from the trauma he went through. He couldn’t cope anymore.
Girtie kept fighting, but in the end, what she had gone through, was too much for her little body and her soul to bare.
Girtie died today at 14:18.
Her little body couldn’t take anymore.

You see Mr Andrews, these animals grieve. These animals ARE sentient beings. And given the especially traumatic situations that they have been through, we as carers are already so many steps behind in their care.
We fight for them to live.
We run on No sleep. No personal hygiene. No eating. No family time.
Everything comes second when you have a sick
Joey. That Joey is your priority. But these animals deserve the right to live, so we fight for their survival.

These animals deserve to be with their families. With their mother’s. Their fathers. Cousins. Aunties Uncles and GrandParents.
We have to stop controlling them.
They know how to regulate their own numbers. They have been doing this for millions of years without the help of us.
They are designed for this county.
They know the land better than anyone or anything.
Please Stop interfering with them.

This Pet Food Industry NEEDS to stop Mr Andrews. These animals need to be protected.
There are faces like Girtie every single night that have their heads smashed against bullbars. Decapitated. Stomped on.
You too need to stop believing the lies
Please listen to us
Please stop this cruel and barbaric industry
For Girtie and those like her.
For All Wildlife Rescuers, Carers and people who love them.

This little girl deserved and those like her, deserve the freedom and the right to live their lives. Please stop taking this away from them.

💕 Wildlife carers day 💕

Today is the day we recognise, acknowledge and thank the thousands of people around our country that dedicate their lives to caring for our native wildlife.

What many people don’t know is that these people are all volunteers. They volunteer their time 24/7 to do this. They receive no government support or funding, they use their own money to rehabilitate our wildlife.

Taking care of wildlife is a round the clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year commitment. Young orphans require feeding every 2 to 4 hours a day. These orphans are in care for years, not months but years, until they are big enough for release.

There are so many things that we can do to help them. Reach out to your local shelter and ask if there are any things that you can help with.

- Collecting grass or browse for animals in care.
- Donating cleaning supplies, fresh produce or other items I share on my wildlife grocery list. Anything you donate means they can use their money for other things.
- Making pouches or any other things they might need (bottle stands, enclosures, possum or nesting boxes etc)
- Help with cleaning enclosures, preparing bottles of food or general duties around the shelter
- Transporting Wildlife from vets to shelters
- Setting up a weekly donation of even five dollars is a big help. If shelters received $100 every week from supporters it would be a huge relief to many. Every dollar adds up and helps make a difference.

Since I was 11 years old I have been doing what I can to support volunteers that care for our Wildlife. I hope that by sharing the work that I do it shows people that age is not a barrier when it comes to helping, and that there are so many ways that don’t involve just giving money, that can support Wildlife carers.

Thank you again to the thousands of amazing carers all around our country that dedicate their lives to rehabilitating our beautiful native Australian wildlife.

✋ SLOW
THE
F*CK
DOWN

🛑 For the wildlife rescue world it’s currently trauma/ pinky season. And sadly that means more road kill, more hit and runs, more orphans and more pressure on the rescue and veterinary network as a whole.

🛑 All we ask of you is to slow down. Stop playing with your radio, your phone and putting on your makeup or whatever you are doing other than concentrating on driving - it might just spare a life.

🛑 As the winter months pass and we move towards the warmth of spring, all species become more active, more hungry and more inclined to want to mate. The bubs from last season have matured and have been tossed from pouches, nests, warrens and hollows, ready for the new arrivals.

🛑 Those freshly moved away from home are Inexperienced and still learning to navigate this big bad world, no longer with mum, they move across the wildlife corridors, desperately seeking a territory of their own. They know not the fate that awaits them in the world of humans, dogs, cats, cats and roads. They run on instinct alone - and sadly suffer for simply doing so.

✋ From dusk to dawn is peak hour for our wildlife, so we ask you pay more attention, keep your eyes peeled and expect the unexpected, and most of all- SLOW THE F*CK DOWN- cos speeding makes you no one’s hero!

Is this not the best awareness campaign ever?!?!?

“Koala wants a wife” highlights that koalas are more active as they look for “love.”

Drivers need to be more aware on roads and pedestrians/hikers also need to be aware for any that might have been clipped by cars but made it back to the safety of the bush, parkland or private property.

Note- it’s not just boys that could be crossing roads. In most cases, girls aren’t looking for a “boyfriend” so they too, could be crossing roads etc to get away from a boy.

Please save your local rescue numbers in your phone. You never know when you’ll need them and trying to find a number in an emergency will only increase your stress. Save them NOW.

I just wanted to show you the great mans hand.
He uses it to scratch an itch, to dig holes, to hold and hug his loved ones.
He doesn't use it to grab a weapon and kill other species for fun.
His light is that of love. He doesn't even think to do this.
Humans are lucky to just walk amongst them.
Such beauty should be protected at all costs.

DO YOU KNOW...
How to age Australian Magpies?

It's all in their beaks! 😉

Juvenile magpies (less than 1 year old) have an all black beak.

Immature magpies (1-2 years old) have a black beak, that is going silver in patches.

Adult magpies (2+ years) have silver beaks, with a black tip.

Now you know how to tell the (approximate) age of these beautiful birds! 🖤🤍

Tape worms are disgusting.

This is kangaroo poo from a wild mob. And the white, ribbon-like creature is a tape worm.

Please, don’t eat kangaroo meat

09/02/2022

Dear , Many pet owners and pet food suppliers are unaware of where kangaroo meat comes from and the cruelty that occurs during the commercial killing of kangaroos. We know pet owners love animals and we are sure they would not continue to feed kangaroo meat to their pets if they knew t...

Hey wildlife lovers,

We are hoping you might consider getting this info out to the people you know. This year we have seen a considerable number of animals coming into care after being looked after by people who are not registered rehabilitation specialists.

Grace here is an example. She is blind now as a result of cataracts. These cataracts were caused by drinking cows milk which was given to her by the people that found her. They thought she would make a nice pet. This is incurable.

Here are a just a few of the many reasons we ask the public to surrender the native wildlife they find as soon as is humanly possible;

✅Wildlife carers receive training and generally specialise in specific species. Like humans, animals suffer with complex health issues as a result of trauma, illness and a myriad of other factors. Without this training and experience it is very easy to miss the indicators which can lead to permanent injury or death.

✅Wildlife rehabilitators have access to veterinarians who are
interested and/or experienced with wildlife. These vets can provide the correct medications and the pain relief required. Wildlife are adept at hiding signs of pain and illness for survival reasons and as a result it may be easy to assume an animal is not in pain. Without the correct pain relief people may be causing misery and distress without even being aware they are doing it.

✅In Australia, most jurisdictions have made it illegal to take animals from the wild. Anyone without an appropriate licence may be leaving themselves open to big fines. The saddest part of this is that the animal is often incapable of being returned to the wild and is put to sleep.

✅Whilst much of our wildlife appears cute and cuddly when young they make terrible pets as they grow older. Many are then left to lead lonely lives in aviaries or are surrendered. Sexually mature wildlife is often overwhelmingly horrible to live with.

✅Many species of wildlife which come into registered care centres are raised with others of their own kind. This allows them to form natural bonds, life long relationships and helps them learn the social skills required for survival in the wild.

✅Finally, many people rely on websites or Facebook to get advice on raising wildlife. Much of this information is given by well meaning people but it is often wrong. Really really wrong.

Thank you for taking the time to read this post and we hope this information gives you an understanding of why it’s not right. If you or someone you know is interested in learning then it’s not good to muddle along with a sick, orphaned or injured animal you found. You can get training and mentoring and become an important part of a saving lives by joining your local wildlife group.

Cheers peoples,
Cat (Wild Animals Australia)
