Jamieson's Working Dogs Breeding and Training Sheepdogs Specifically for Sheepdog Trialling Please remember, if you have the desire and commitment to succeed it can be done.
(1)

A resource site for people interested in caring for, breeding and training sheepdogs specifically to compete in sheepdog trials. I’ve been competing in sheepdog trials in Australia since 1992 and have learnt from some of the best stock handlers and dog trainers in the country over the journey. As a result, I’ve been fortunate enough to develop systems and core beliefs that work effectively for me

and have enabled me to have a reasonable level of success over a long period of time. Some of my successes include qualifying as a member of the country’s top 4 triallers to represent Australia in the Trans-Tasman Test series, the pinnacle of our sport. Many Open trial wins with multiple dogs over a long period of time, in recent years the resume includes winning the Tasmanian “Consistency” dog of the year award, Tasmanian Championship, CopRice Champion of Champions Series and consistently placing in the top 3 at the Australian Championships and Commonwealth Championships with multiple dogs. A key to my success is a desire to continuously learn how to become a better trainer and importantly better understand how to effectively work different types of sheep. This is particularly key to my success as I’m not a farmer or a stock manager, I own a real estate agency and live on a 3-acre block in an urban area and compete in sheepdog trials in my spare time. I know there are a lot of people out there in a similar position to me that have a desire to compete in sheepdog trials but just don’t know where to start. If by sharing my knowledge and successes with people who share the same aspirations to me is helpful, then feel free to follow me on this page and I might be able to help you. Some of the topics I’ll cover here will include;

• Breeding and or selecting pups for the best chance of success on the trial field
• Caring for your dogs, nutrition, health and housing
• Starting pups on the right path
• Training through the various stages from pup to podium
• Having a personal routine designed for ultimate success
• Competing in sheepdog trials and overcoming setbacks
• The mindset required for competition
• Interviews with top sheepdog triallers

It’s with sadness that our much loved Jo Taylor passed away on Saturday morning. Jo was a popular lady within the sheep dog trials community all around Australia. She will always be affectionately remembered, now at peace and reunited with Malcolm. From my family and the Tasmanian Working Sheep Dog Association we send our condolences to Jo’s family.

I will share the funeral notice when available. I can say that the funeral will be in Launceston this Friday the 23rd of August at 2pm. For those interstate friends, there will be a livestream of the service.

Just putting this post up to see if anyone I know in Tassie is looking for a Border Collie working dog pup. I have one coming for myself in early June from a mate in Victoria, he has two male pups left. Bred from trial dog lines and would also suit as farm dogs or active family pets. Send me a private message if you are interested in more details.

A message from the President of the Agfest Trial committee, Bernard McGlashan

Agfest has been and gone once again and it was a great success for our sport, lots of spectators, great weather and good sheep ( most of the time)
First and foremost I would like to thank CopRice for supporting us once again this year and also for all the trials on the calendar. As a Coprice ambassador I am very proud of the way every competitor conducted themselves on and off the trial ground, even when the sheep didn’t go your way, as we all know how important this event is to our sport and it gives us an opportunity to give something back to Coprice in someway.
Big thanks to Lee Jamieson for all the work that was done behind the scenes, working with Coprice and the Rural Youth Committee to make it all fall into place at the right time! Thanks Lee.
To the hens in the hen house thanks again you do the timekeeping so professionally and there is never a hold up.
To John Bramich and Mary Southen for judging and thanks to Maxine Bramich for keeping John well fed and organised.
To Micheal, Louise and Curley for the work with sheep, specially Curley as he was on a plane next day great effort, thanks.
To all competitors that helped letting sheep out for the three days and a major thanks to Anthony Berne, you’re a trooper mate!!
Thanks to James, Will , Amy and young Jock for helping with the set up and pull down afterwards thanks a lot .It was great to see so many new trialers and dogs face the dreaded walk onto trial ground, anybody that has trialled at Agfest knows it can be a lonely place out there sometimes.Congratulations to Martin Waddingham on winning the consistency and running second as well, great effort and I wish you and Lee the best of luck at the Supreme and Ted Gaby later in the year. Thanks to Anna for your great photography again, you make all the dogs look so life like.
Finally to me I think the Tasmania Association looks to be in its best shape for a long while with new keen members and good atmosphere at trials, all the best to everyone in the coming season cheers Bernard.

Mum come across this story from 2008 on the CopRice Supreme Australian Championships and Trans Tasman Test which were held in Tasmania at the AFL stadium in Launceston. The story features Malcolm Taylor and Bernard McGlashan who were Australian team members along with Stefan Cross and John Perry if memory serves me well. Australia won the test and Pip Hudson and Golda won the Supreme.

This weekend my dog Glenmurray Toby won his first Open trial at the CopRice Fingal Sheep Dog Trial. As a 2 1/2 year old he’s the current state Novice and Improver Champion and after placing in several opens he’s finally got the monkey off his back with today’s win. Next trial is the CopRice Agfest Championship in a couple of weeks.

The 2024 CopRice Fingal Sheepdog trials are on this weekend. Action will begin at 8am each day. There will be a food and coffee van available all weekend in Fingal. Please support this local small business. Powered sites for caravans are available at the grounds and all is set for a great weekend of trialling.

Fence is up, big shout out to Bernard McGlashan for all the heavy work today.

Unfortunately our run on the Top 20 didn’t go to plan and we retired. Steele gave 100% and did everything I asked of him but the sheep were just too tough. There’s always next year as they say…

Met ambassador Caroline Kennedy at The National Sheepdog Trial - ACT yesterday and explained the finer details of sheepdog trials. Such a lovely down to earth lady who was genuinely interested in our sport.

The 2024 Nationals are here. The grounds are prepared for action to begin tomorrow morning. I’m excited to be competing this year while also talking to patrons about the CopRice range of Working Dog Food. Hosted at Hall, near Canberra ACT, the weather is forecast to be great all week and the competition is sure to be strong with many of Australia’s best handlers and dogs taking to the field.

Today was the final day of the Australian Sheepdog Championships in Koroit VIC. Steele and I made the final and ended up finishing 3rd in the Open. I’m happy with the effort and hard work Steele put in over three runs, we didn’t leave anything on the table this week and I couldn’t have asked more from him. The sheep were too good today. Congratulations Barry Knight on a top run in the final.

This week we competed at the Commonwealth Championships in Port Fairy where we worked in several different classes with some good runs and a couple of tough ones too. The trial show cased some of the best dogs and handlers from around the country with around 120 entrants in the Open class.

The trial also hosts the annual Bill Paton Australian Dog of the year where the top dog from each of the six states compete for their states. This year Shannandoah Steele and I finished in second place to Mick Hudson and MGH Rabbit from NSW, who also went on to win the Open Championship. I also had two dogs in the top 20 final and we finished third in the Trans Tasman trial. So all in all a pretty good week and great company. As always a big thanks to my sponsor CopRice who always ensure my dogs are in peak condition

The results have been tallied for the 2022/3 CopRice Champion of Champions Series. Based on the accumulated points over 5 major championship trials across Tasmania.

I’m very proud as the owner of both Glennmurray Toby and Shannandoah Steele that in every one of the four rounds we competed in we either won or finished in second place.

For those who are interested to know more about Toby, he is a 2 year dog by Steele out of Al Hort’s Dam Flossie. Earlier this month he won the Novice and Improver classes and placed in the Open at the CopRice Tasmanian championships and followed up with another second place in the Open at the Royal Launceston show trial last weekend. Its fair to say I’m happy with his progress and he’s likely to be a permanent member of my team.

Steele had another strong year finishing on top in the Tasmanian Dog of the year Consistency award for the second time in a row, etching our names on this revered piece of Tasmanian working dog history. If you made it this far thanks for reading 😀

On the road again. We haven’t posted in a while it’s been our off season in Tassie and I’ve been busy moving house. We’ve just brought a 25 acre property on the West Tamar, which will suit us well for dog training after 10 years on a 3 acre block near the city. We are headed for Strathalbyn in SA to compete in the Supreme Aust Champs which begins this weekend. I’ll also be competing in the Ted Gaby Interstate Competition which is also the selection trial for this years Aust Test Team who will head to NZ In October, fingers crossed we can make the team again this year. A big thanks to CopRice for your continued support of me.
