No living being should be getting 100% of their calories from ultra-processed foods.

Kibble’s best qualities are that it’s cost-effective and convenient.

Fresh, nutrient-dense whole foods have always been and will always be the key to longevity for all living things.

Take this knowledge and let it motivate you to boost your dog’s bowls, even if that’s just a small step in the minimally processed direction.

🍪ADDING COMMERCIAL RAW FOOD TO A PUPPY'S DIET 🍪

Although we predominantly feed homemade raw meals (balanced to a recipe), we also introduce commercial premade products to puppies.

We use airdried and freeze dried food for:

🚗Travelling with raw fed dogs
🍪Healthy training treats
🧇An alternative to kibble in food toys, snuffle mats etc
🍲Meal toppers
🥣Adding variety into our rotation of food

Air dried raw food is new for Kit today. I crumbled some on top of his meat meal tonight and he loved it. We rotate brands and flavours for variety. Prime 100 is an excellent product and one we use regularly. We also like Ziwi Peak, Providore & K9 Natural dried tripe and meal toppers. These kind of products are also good as balancers for homemade meals, as they can add things into the diet, we can't access easily eg some organ meats.

We will also introduce some premade BARF, Prime rolls etc in the coming weeks.

🐾❤RAISING PUPPIES ON A RAW DIET❤🐾

🐶Our singleton puppy, Kit, is 6 weeks old today. During the past 2 weeks, we have been weaning him to a raw diet.

🐇He is eating well and eats a good variety of proteins, edible bones and other wholefoods such as green tripe, eggs and yoghurt.

✅He is currently eating 4 small meals a day and will do so up to 12 weeks.

🍪Although I make up my own meals for him, I will also introduce him to commercial raw & fresh food products (dehydrated, airdried, frozen etc) so that he knows what they are and will eat them in future.

⚠️ARE YOU NEW TO RAW FEEDING? DO YOU HAVE A YOUNG PUPPY?

If you have a puppy and are new to raw feeding, I would encourage you to feed a balanced premade raw (eg Big Dog Raw) or use a base mix to add to meat (eg Vets All Natural), until you are confident about balancing the diet properly. It is crucial that growing puppies are fed a balanced diet, for normal growth and development.

It's so important to understand this information. Although I don't feed or recommend kibble, I still research it so I can help to educate others.

The marketing is clever and labelling of ingredients is really very deceptive and preys on people who want to feed their dogs the best food. Dogs are not designed to eat kibble, which is a highly processed food and contributes to so many preventable health issues in our pets. Kibble was developed for our convenience and has nothing to do with health at all. I learnt this the hard way with my first Cavalier.

If you are feeding kibble, this explanation is easy to understand, in terms of what the actual meat and other content is.

Remember also that protein isn't necessarily meat - in kibble (including expensive "high end" kibble) it is often meal (which is cut with other things not listed) and includes things like pulses, pea protein, beet pulp etc - none of which should be fed to dogs in large quantities.

🚨📌 BEWARE OF KIBBLE MARKETING TRICKS! 🚨📌

Animal protein should be the first ingredient in any quality pet food—ideally, the first two ingredients. But kibble marketers know this and use it to trick you into thinking their food is higher in protein than it really is.

Here’s the catch: The ingredient list shows items from most to least by weight, but this weight is measured before the food is processed. Fresh meats, like chicken or beef, contain a lot of water, while meals, like chicken meal or beef meal, don’t.

When kibble is made, fresh chicken might be listed as the first ingredient. But remember, chicken is about 70% water. Once processed, it loses most of its weight, which means the actual protein content from chicken ends up being much lower in the final product.

For example, if a food lists chicken as 40% of the ingredients, after drying, it might only be 12% chicken. The rest? Likely corn meal or other fillers. 🌽

FEEDING MUMMY WHEN MUMMY IS FUSSY

😱😱😱

Don't despair! Alice is nursing a singleton puppy who is now 3 weeks old. There have been a number of issues with feeding Alice so we have been working through those. Alice has never been a great eater (which is very unusual in our house and certainly unusual for a Cavalier) but it's what we have! I thought I would share some of the things I have done to encourage her to eat well while she's nursing.

This is a selection of some of Alice's meals over the past 3 weeks. We are following the "BARF for lactation" guidelines set out in Dr Ian Billinghurst's raw feeding book that he wrote for breeders.

Alice's meals are being alternated between raw meaty bones, the fortified milk drink and her meat meal with extras.

🍗EDIBLE BONES
Alice is eating chicken wings, chicken necks, chicken frame pieces, rabbit meaty bone pieces, lamb ribs and forequarters choose and turkey carcasses (minced)

🥛FORTIFIED MILK DRINK
This is a rich, nutritious drink that is high in calcium and protein. It is great to keep the mother's milk flowing and the quality is high. It keeps good condition on the bitch as well as helping to form good milk for the litter.

🥩MEAT, ORGANS and EXTRAS
Dr Billinghurst's book has a recipe called BARF FOR LACTATION - a recipe we usually feed to purchase nursing mothers and they love it. Alice didn't want to eat it. I tried and tried and she just wouldn't touch it. I was worried about her not eating so I fed her the things she WOULD eat. Sometimes this was hit and miss. Most of the time I did get her eating. Sometimes I hand fed her. When she didn't eat or drink from a bowl (😭), I syringed the milk drink into her mouth. I did that for the first 2 weeks. At the 3 week post whelping mark, she is now back to eating out of a bowl and eating quite well.

She eats pork chunks, beef chunks, pork mince, liver (cooked), kidney (cooked) and heart. She doesn't like salmon or sardines which is a pain but OK with white fish. I did cook her some Pink Ling one night in bone broth and that was a hit.

I got clever at hiding things I wanted her to eat and also fed her things that I wouldn't feed her regularly. I bought in a selection of dehydrated raw food: Ziwi Peak, Prime Air Dried Raw, Our Patch Airdried Raw Toppers, Dried organs etc. These toppers are a good way of picking up nutritional gaps in the diet.

Anyway, we're doing OK! I bought some roast chicken in and have portioned it for the freezer. Alice does like roast chicken but I haven't used it yet, as she is chugging along OK with the fresh raw food and toppers.

🍗🥦🥚FEEDING MUMMY A RAW & FRESH DIET

The quality and quantity of a bitch's milk is really only going to be as good as the food that goes into her.

Having breeding dogs who are well nourished and healthy is crucial for the next generation. This of course begins with the milk supply.

For lactating mums, we follow the principles set out in Dr Ian Billinghurst's book, written for breeders, called Grow Your Pups With Bones. The diet is easy to follow and is made up of 3 components. These 3 things keep the bitch in excellent condition and make beautiful, rich and plentiful milk. The condition of the puppies is second to none. They grow beautifully and have glossy, shiny coats and good gut health from the minute they are born.

1. Fortified milk drink
2. Raw Meaty Bones
3. BARF mix for lactation

The recipes are included in the book - but I will also share them in my posts when I'm making them up.

The collage shows some of the meals Alice has had since her puppy arrived on Saturday:

- fortified milk (eggs, yoghurt, honey, junket/calcium, flaxseed oil)

- raw meaty bones (currently chicken necks and minced turkey frames)

- BARF mix (meat, kidney, liver, heart, cottage cheese, fruit, vegies, eggs, flaxseed oil, yoghurt, kelp, brewer's yeast, vitamin C)

I also add in a few toppers (eg dehydrated green tripe and Ziwi Peak air dried raw)

We welcomed this little guy on the weekend! You can follow his journey on our kennel page at Blacklash Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

This special little fella is a 4th generation raw fed puppy.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing how we feed the nursing mum, Alice and also will show you the weaning process. Singleton puppies can be a little slower to learn and develop than litters with siblings, so this may take little longer than usual.

We welcomed a surprise package on Saturday afternoon! Alice's ultrasound didn't show any puppies and the vet thought she was having a phantom pregnancy!

The black and tan boy weighed a lovely healthy 258g and arrived at a very civilised hour in the afternoon. Alice birthed the singleton naturally too so she is forgiven for keeping her secret!

As with all our litters, this little fella will be raised with the Puppy Culture protocols. ❤

Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) exercises begin tomorrow. 🧠

💚Green tripe, dehydrated (K9 Natural)
🫐 Blueberries

K9 Natural tripe is available at Petstock and Petbarn. They also have a range of boosters that you can add to meals and also dehydrated, complete meals.

These kind of products are good for adding in your meal rotation and are also fabulous for travelling with raw fed dogs as they live in the cupboard.

❄💙❄FREEZER PREP DAY❄💙❄

Today is meat prep day as I did our fortnightly shop yesterday. I don't shop to a list. I buy what is economical and available. As this varies, that means we are feeding plenty of different things and it is very affordable. I look out for specials and buy up to stash in the freezer.

🦃🐏🐓🦘This shop I bought turkey mince, lamb kidneys, lamb heart and chicken livers, lamb and chicken meaty bones and a Prime 100 roll (kangaroo) which will be rotated with BARF mixes.

These meaty bones will be fed over the next 2 weeks.

🐏Lamb ribs & necks
🐓Chicken wings
🐓Chicken frames

I already have some other bones in the freezer; 🐖pork necks and 🐟salmon heads, so these will be rotated along with the new bones I bought.

VARIETY HELPS US TO ACHIEVE BALANCE

✅I alternate these so the dogs get something different each day. If they have chicken for breakfast, I will feed a different protein at dinner time. This keeps variety in the diet for balance and also keeps things interesting for the dogs.

✅We rotate proteins as well as different cuts eg chicken frames, necks and wings, as they all have different nutritional values.

✅We also rotate harder bones (like pork or lamb ribs or necks) with chicken or fish as these are softer. Harder bones are needed to clean teeth as well as provide important nutrients.

✅I bag everything up in meal size portions and label them. I then stack them in the freezer as I get them out eg chicken, pork, fish, lamb. That makes it easy at defrosting time as I just grab whatever is next, without having to think too much!

✅This kind of organisation is important in a multidog household and I find it makes the coming fortnight so much easier. I do the same with dinner meals.

🐏🌿🐏Lamb meaty bones for breaky today. These come as a bag of mixed bones from the butcher. They are already cut up and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

🐏Meaty lamb bones are high in protein, calcium and iron. Protein is essential for building and repairing your dog's muscle tissue.

🐏These bones also contain omega-3 fatty acids which promote a healthy heart and good brain function. Omega 3s also help regulate the immune system and contribute to the dog's healthy skin and coat.

🐏The marrow inside the bones is full of antioxidants, which fight disease. Antioxidants can help dogs that struggle with allergies. Antioxidants protect against damage caused by free radicals and boost the immune system. 🌿

Edible bones are one of the most natural foods for dog and should form a regular part of their diet.

Is your Cavalier on heart medication?

🫐💊 If you have a Cavalier with MVD and on medication, it is super important to boost potassium as this is depleted on this medication. Blueberries are high in potassium so are a great dietary addition to boost this mineral. You can feed these daily.

THIS!!!!!

This is why we bang on about healthy diet, folks!

Everything we do with our dogs starts with the food we put into them. It is the cornerstone of health.

If you want your Cavalier to live a long and healthy life, you need to pay attention to their nutrition and how *you* can do the best, so they can live their best life.

Hills Science Diet are being sued for over 2 billion dollars (3 billion Australian) for making false claims.

This follows the saga going back a few years where Hills (and other companies) were telling consumers that grain free diets caused heart disease (DCM) and were killing dogs.

There is an interesting backstory to this which you can read in the link.

Does grain-free dog food really cause heart disease (DCM) in dogs? KetoNatural don't think so, and allege Hill's made fraudulent claims.

❌The current recommendation is that you don't feed coconut oil to Cavaliers unless they have been tested first.

PROVIDING BALANCE IN HOME PREPARED MEALS

Here are 9 dinner meals showing the variety of food our dogs have eaten over 9 days. You will see that no meal is exactly the same. Sometimes the base mix is the same but the toppers are different.

Our dogs eat twice a day, with the bone portion of their diet eaten at breakfast time. This is another way of achieving a balanced diet. We feed different proteins at breakfast and dinner to add variety.

Tonight's dinner is Big Dog Raw "Combo" recipe served with roasted sweet potato and lamb heart chunks.

Benefits of feeding ❤ heart ❤:

✅ heart is rich in folate, iron, zinc, and selenium

✅ heart is a great source of vitamins B2, B6, and B12, all three of which are in a group known as B-complex vitamins.

✅ B vitamins found in heart and organ meats have a cardioprotective effect, meaning they protect against heart disease

We feed heart several times a week to our Cavaliers as part of a heart-healthy diet.

🍗Today's raw meaty bones were chicken frame pieces, which the dogs had for breakfast.

Dinner is using some homemade leftover BARF and Prime roll. These rolls are cooked, not raw but the ingredients are healthy and good quality and they do compliment our fresh diet very well. Even my fussy Alice who is not a fan of fish, likes this Snapper roll.

❓What's in the bowl tonight?

🦘Roo & beef BARF pattie mix
🐟Prime Pantry Snapper

Toppers tonight are:
🐏Lamb liver
🐄Yoghurt
💚Pepitas (finely chopped)

WHY FEED PEPITAS?

✅Pepitas are the edible seeds of pumpkins, which have been hulled.

✅Pepitas are very nutritious and make a good addition to the diet.

✅Pepitas are high in essential fatty acids, calcium, protein, fibre, niacin, iron, zinc, manganese, magnesium, and phosphorus. The seeds are also a moderate source of riboflavin, folate, pantothenic acid, sodium, and potassium.

🍵ADDING EXTRAS TO YOUR DOG'S BOWL🍵

A lot of websites and dog groups can make feeding your dog sound complicated. I see a lot of people are too scared to make the leap from processed food to feeding a healthier diet. You can improve your dog's diet in different ways. Feeding small amounts of fresh food from your own table or meal prep is a good way to start.

An easy way to boost the nutrition of your dog's meals, no matter how or what you feed, is easy if you share your own food. Dog safe kitchen scraps can be added the same day or kept aside and stored in the fridge or freezer for another day.

Tonight's base BARF mix was turkey, to which I added:

🥬Silver beet stalks and outer leaves, chopped and steamed. These were left over from our own meal prep. The stalks and leaves add fibre, vitamin C, protein, iron, calcium and magnesium. So, there is still plenty of nutrition left in something that would be regarded as rubbish by some. We steam these kind of veggies and the dogs happily eat them as a meal topper. You can also prepare them by blending finely in a food processor.

🐋Tuna oil - this was drained off a tin of tuna - once again leftovers from our own meal prep. I drizzled it over the top of the dog's meals tonight.

🎃Pumpkin - I cooked up a wedge of pumpkin a couple of weeks ago. This was roasted until golden then mashed. I included the skin as it's good for fibre.

🥣Cottage cheese - this is a cheap and easy way to boost the protein and calcium in a meal. Because it's cultured, it's easy to digest. Tonight I have added this instead of yoghurt.

Boosting the nutrition of your dog's meals is easy if you know how. If you are feeding ultra processed food (aka kibble) this is an easy way to add some fresh food and variety.

👉Tonight's dinner is a bit of a medley of things, using stuff up and adding toppers, to bulk out the meal.

🍳I always say if you have things like yoghurt, eggs and cottage cheese or ricotta in the fridge and/or tinned fish in the cupboard, you can easily make up a healthy meal for your dog.

🐶I have lightly cooked the kidney & liver in butter. The dogs really like it this way, rather than leaving it. Two dogs used to pick organs out of their meal and hide it in their beds 🙈.

🥘I think I have relaxed my feeding regime over the years and although I feed mostly raw, there are some things I now cook and liver and kidney are two of those things. I would rather the dogs eat those cooked than not eat it at all. Organs are too important to leave out of the diet! We also feed dehydrated organs.

🐂🌿🦘Leftover Beef & roo BARF from last night (there was only about a teaspoon each)
🐏Lamb kidney
🐓Chicken liver
🍠Sweet potato (roasted)
🐄Greek yoghurt
🐟Tinned sardines
🏺Omega 3,6,9 oil blend (Natural Animal Solutions)
🍓Raspberries

The pink 💗 Kong bone is filled with a mashed sardines and topped with cream cheese. This is as well as the other food for our adolescent puppy, Merry. Merry has done a lot of crate conditioning work, but she can get quite impatient and vocal once she's finished eating. Giving her a food toy extends the time she sits quietly in her crate - and that's good for all of us!!!
