We share how we feed our dogs, to show how easy it is to put together fresh, healthy meals. Unfortunately some dog groups can make feeding raw or fresh meals sound difficult. Out come the calculators and the ratios and complete overwhelm for some dog owners. And I get it! You don't need a calculator or a special app to feed your dog. You can learn to make your own mixes from recipes. You can feed a base mix like Vets All Natural, you can buy premade frozen or fresh meals. You can rotate recipes, add toppers etc. There are so many options now. 🌿

Your Vet sees the worst of the worst, they see people feeding solely meat and calling it a raw diet or something like this....chicken, veg and rice and thinking that its an awesome diet when it's so nutrient deficient that long term it can be really problematic for your dog.

Please do better so Vets support fresh food feeding.

❌ Critically low or missing in essential nutrients
❌ Lacks balanced mineral ratios (especially calcium vs phosphorus)
❌ Lacks crucial fatty acids
❌ Poor amino acid balance (if only lean breast meat is used)
❌ No organ meats (key micronutrients)

See the comments section for a table that outlines the deficiencies and what they could mean for your dog long term.

This is a really good point to make. "I never do percentages..." . I remember watching a video over 10 years ago from a raw feeding group I was in at the time. It was a painful hour of a pet dog owner writing out percentages of everything in an exercise book for her 2 dogs. Then we watched her painstakingly measuring everything and doing complicated maths about how much bone was in this and that, adding this, subtracting that. I thought about how many people would be so turned off raw feeding by thinking they had to do this every time they fed their dogs. Feed the dog in front of you. You don't need a calculator! Look at your dog's condition. Are they overweight? Are they too skinny? What does their coat look like? Is it shiny and soft? Is the skin dry? Do they need fattier meat? Leaner meat? How is their poo? Is it healthy looking? These are real world questions. Feeding a dog should be easy, not difficult. Throw away your calculator and read your dog!

I've been busy stocking up the treat jars over the last couple of days. I love mixing different treats up to make a trail mix. This is often what I take with me on my outings and walks with the dogs. I use different treats for different things (eg at home, recall practice, bedtime snacks, training classes etc).

Chicken breast fillets are easy to turn into treats and are loved by all our dogs.

TIPS:

📍I freeze, then defrost slightly, so the fillets aren't rock hard.

📍I slice thinly and they go in the dehydrator for 10 hours at 70°C.

📍If the slices are thick, they will need longer.

Treats drying today:

🐖Pork kidney &
🐓Chicken breast

I freeze then defrost slightly until it "gives" a little. I get nice even, thin slices this way.

I often make up a trail mix for my treat pouch - it varies from week to week, depending what I have in. Sometimes I add in some commercial freeze dried raw as well, to mix up the flavours and textures.

We place a lot of importance on gut health in our puppies because so many things are linked to it. We give both probiotic and prebiotic foods when weaning and right through our dogs' lives into old age.

🦠 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗱 – 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 🐶💚

We’ve all grown up thinking bacteria = dirty, gross, get rid of it asap. But not so fast, your dog’s body (like yours) is full of bacteria that are actually doing some pretty important work.

✔️ Helping digest food
✔️ Keeping the immune system ticking along
✔️ Fighting off the bad bugs
✔️ Even playing a role in mood and skin health

The goal isn’t to wipe it all out, it’s about balance.
Too much bad bacteria? Itchy skin, upset guts, smelly ears.
Not enough good bacteria? Same deal.

So instead of blasting your dog with harsh products or antibiotics at every turn, think about ways to support the good bugs:

🌿 Feed fresh, real food
🦠 Add a good quality probiotic (for dogs, not just yogurt)
🧴 Use gentle, microbiome-friendly skincare
🐾 Let them have the odd roll in the grass – it’s basically nature’s probiotic buffet
🚶‍♀️ Take them for regular walks in natural areas, trees, dirt, grass, and fresh air all help build a healthy skin microbiome

You don’t need to fear all bacteria. Some of them are the good guys and your dog needs them around.

Balanced bugs = a healthier, happier pup.

🦘🌿🦘Kangaroo is low in fat and high in protein. It's also high in iron, zinc and B group vitamins. We feed kangaroo in rotation with our other proteins. We change up meat pieces and minced roo in BARF recipes.

We also feed kangaroo in the form of raw meaty bones, which our dogs had for breakfast today.

These are kangaroo frames - our supplier will cut these down into smaller sizes but I often just chop them with an axe 🪓. The bones cut quite easily if you follow the joints or cut at the thinner parts. I get 4 breakfast meals out of 1 frame, so they are very economical.

Roo frames are packed with calcium and other vitamins and minerals not found in meat. By feeding raw meaty bones, you are getting the benefits of both.

Because frames are a harder bone than say poultry, they are excellent for cleaning teeth and preventing tartar. 🌿

These frames are from Northern Pet Meats in Launceston.
