When I started feeding raw 25 years ago, I really felt like I was the only one doing it! I learnt how to put a balanced diet together by researching and reading.

The first raw feeding book I read was Dr Ian Billinghurst's "Give Your Dog A Bone". I was blown away and have never looked back.

I have fed raw to a number of different dog breeds and also cats and ferrets. Our pets have enjoyed brilliant health and better than average longevity. I think I have heard pretty much every myth and misconception going around, but nothing has swayed me back.

With the advent of social media and the wider availability of commercial raw food, we are seeing a greater uptake of owners choosing to feed this way.

As I have said before, if you can open a packet, you can feed raw. You just need to shop in the fresh food aisle, rather than the kibble aisles.

We teach all our puppy families how to feed a balanced raw diet and support them for life.

When people say kibble has everything a dog needs and is scientifically formulated, I like to imagine what the top 5 ingredients would look like in the bowl.

I understand why people feed kibble, but saying this is healthier than a balanced fresh food diet because of those points just doesn't hit right.

This bowl represents a formula of a well-known and respected brand for a popular breed.

Raw meaty bones were kangaroo tails and frames and fed at breakfast time.

There was a small amount of the salmon mix left over from last night, so I just added in a few bits and pieces from the freezer to make up a meal.

Hard to believe we're at the start of a new week!

This was the dogs' dinner the night I prepped the fruit and veg blend:

I added greek yoghurt to the puree before serving.

- ✅️Add to meat and mix in well (good if your dog picks stuff out)

- ✅️add fresh as a topper

- ✅️freeze in silicon moulds and serve frozen as healthy treats or meal toppers

- ✅️add to food toys eg Kongs, LickiMats etc. Can be served fresh or frozen to extend licking time. Great for healthy hot weather snacks.

Our new Kitchenaid blender has arrived and was put to work immediately, blending a batch of raw fruit and veg for the dogs.

This was an end of week batch, so there wasn't a lot of variety. I usually do a fridge cleanout before our weekly shop. I will do a green blend in the coming days.

This blend is:

🥬Wombok (Chinese) cabbage
🥕Carrots
🍎Apples
🍊Oranges

I have put this mixture in silicon moulds to freeze. These will be added to meat meals as toppers.

My kitchen job today was packing up 12kg of chicken feet! 🐔🐓🐓🐓

It's been a while since I've been able to buy chicken feet, but I have found a regular supplier, so happy days!

I have 3kg dehydrating for treats and the rest are bagged up and frozen. These will be added to breakfast or dinner meals and they are also fabulous in bone broth.

🐓✅️Chicken feet are fully edible and also make great toothbrushes, supporting gum and dental health.

Yesterday's breakfast bones were Trevally Wings.

This meal in the slow feeder was dinner.

The muesli, probiotic, dental seaweed and slow feeder bowl are all from Lennyskitchenau. I am super happy with all the products we have tried and highly recommend. Tonight's dinner is:

DOG FRIENDLY LEFTOVERS

🥬There are lots of healthy leftovers you can add to your dog's meal. We often set stuff aside from our own meal prep for the dogs.

🥕Cooked vegies, which have been steamed or roasted are an excellent way to add fresh food to your dog's diet. We also save things like outer leaves of greens (eg cabbage, lettuce, cauliflower, broccoli stalks, ends of cucumbers or zucchinis etc).

🥒Any raw kitchen vegie scraps are pulsed in the blender before adding to meat. Starchy vegetables need to be cooked before feeding to your dog.

WHY ARE POTATOES GOOD FOR DOGS?

🥔I stopped feeding potatoes years ago when I started feeding raw. BUT, when I started breeding, I added them back into the diet. I learnt that potatoes were in fact a great prebiotic food.

🥔Prebiotics feed the probiotics. So when you feed these to your dog, you don't need to feed a lot - just a small piece or two. I rotate pumpkin, sweet potato and white potatoes, feeding them every few days.

🥔Potatoes act as a prebiotic when cooked and cooled, a process that forms resistant starch, which feeds beneficial gut bacteria. This resistant starch resists digestion but is broken down by gut microbes, producing short-chain fatty acids that support colon health, reduce inflammation and contribute to a healthy microbiome

🐂🌿🐂🌿🐂Bull chews are loved by all our dogs! These were used as a meal topper for one of their dinners during the week.

WHAT ARE BULL CHEWS?

Bull chews are 100% bull p***s! This is one thing I'm not fussed about sourcing or dehydrating myself 🤣. Happy for someone else to do it! These are made by Pure Tasmanian Pet Food in Launceston.

Bull chews are high in protein and great for dental health. Feed in moderation as they are quite calorific!
