Our story
The Boerboel is a Mastiff breed from South African Mastiff. Bred for guarding property, they are loyal to their families but aloof with strangers. They are extremely large, powerful dogs that were bred to work independently as guardians and therefore should be supervised around strangers. It’s not unusual for this breed to be aggressive toward unfamiliar people and other dogs, so caution must be taken. This is not a breed you can take to your children’s sports games.( this can be done with proper control of your dog ) They are deeply loyal and affectionate with their families.
The Ysterberg bloodline of the South African Mastiff® was developed in the 1940s under the rigors of farm life in the rugged Ysterberg mountain area of South Africa, bred for form and function as a farm and guardian breed, not for purposes of exhibition and commercial sale. The Ysterberg farm dogs preceded the registration and recognition of large native dogs which came to be called “Boerboels” and became part of the gene pool when the Boerboel was created. For the past decade, dedicated breeders of the Ysterberg bloodline continued to breed their dogs under a controlled program of the Ysterberg Mastiff Breed Council (YMBC).
To address confusion related to the name attached to the “Ysterberg Mastiff” and “Boerboel”, we’re excited to announce that as of November 2019, we’re rebranding. As part of our rebranding strategy, our organisation’s name will change from Ysterberg Mastiff™ Breed Council to South African Mastiff® Breed Council – powered by Ysterberg since 1948. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BOERBOEL AND AN YSTERBERG MASTIFF? Aesthetically: The ideal YM male should be between 72-75cm at withers and weigh 72-75kg. Females 68-71cm and weigh 68-71kg. Black is not accepted. Historically: The Ysterberg dogs have a history (on paper) dating back to the early 1940s. When a group of people decided to start a breed called ''Boerboel', the Ysterberg dogs were introduced and became part of the foundation stock of the Boerboel. Years later, in 2010 a group of like minded people decided to take the Ysterberg line out of the Boerboels and try to preserve the look, feel, temperament and health of the original Ysterberg dogs from the past. IS IT AN AGGRESSIVE BREED? No, it is a family dog and companion. However, some bloodlines/dogs can be dog aggressive to some extend. It is nature vs nurture in many cases and this is one of the reasons why we strongly suggest the dogs are properly socialised and at least obedience trained. It is important to establish the hierarchy in a household from the start. It is equally important to educate yourself, your children, your family and friends on proper interacting with do
