“I've seen a lot of people talk negatively about brachycephalic breeds. Especially breeds that aren't even working dogs, like English bulldogs, French bulldogs, and pugs. The point is, it's not very fair to compare working breeds to companion breeds. Even then, brachycephalic breeds or short-snouted breeds are not inherently unhealthy. What drives them to breathe is something called the soft palate. If they breed dogs irresponsibly, even a dog with a longer snout can develop an elongated soft palate. Ethical breeders test always check their health before breeding them, making sure this won't happen to their dogs. The same goes for pinched nostrils. The nostrils will look different depending on the breed, especially in pugs that come from a part of China that is very cold was, and it helps maintain the temperature of the upper respiratory tract. Pugs specifically did not require an open nose, and are intended for a cold, dry climate, not a warm and humid climate. Flat-faced breeds can be healthy. They just need to come from reputable breeders who health test them before breeding. They can live healthy lives and exercise like any other breed. Just don't compare them to working breeds, when they are literally meant to be companions only. That doesn't mean you should spread misinformation about them. I also wanted to mention that most of the health problems I've seen you guys mention are side effects of OBESety. (Overweight)
These dogs need exercise to thrive and stay healthy, just like any other dog. At least 30 minutes per day. Again, if you just don't like them, that's okay! I fully respect that they are not exactly my favorite dogs either, but the least we can do is respect them."
