This great graphic, which was posted by the Arkansas Equine Foundation on Facebook, is the best illustration I’ve seen that illustrates how long it takes for a horse to become fully mature — essentially not until they are six. It makes you think hard about the sports where we ask them to perform at ages two and three, where they are still so unformed.

Development)
Since horses often look more mature than their bones can support, it makes it extra important for riders and trainers to keep the rate of growth plate fusion in mind as they increase work and expectations. As shown in the illustration above, and called out below, the process of growth plate fusion starts in the hooves and then moves upward over time. Interestingly, certain dimensions, such as the height of the coffin bone, is determined at birth.

So make sure your young horses get plenty of turnout and don’t be in a rush when training. Taking your time gives your horse the chance to mature from the inside out.

We specialize in Red Light Therapy, Equissage and Deep Tissue Sports Massage.

♦️Red Light Therapy is known for its rapid ability to open up circulation, reduce inflammation, increase collagen and ATP production, and release endorphins. All of which offer significant healing benefits for poll tension.

♦️Benefits using the Equissage during Treatments

with regular use can:
🐴 Improve blood circulation
🐴 Relax muscles
🐴 Stimulate muscle tissue
🐴 Increase lymphatic drainage
🐴 Improve injury healing
🐴Reduce muscle/joint pain
🐴Improve joint mobility
🐴 Assist recovery

♦️We look at the main benefits in horses receiving regular equine massage therapy:

1. Increase the horses flexibility

As horses begin to get older or experience physical injuries their overall flexibility may be reduced. This may also apply to sports horses who lead an active lifestyle.

Equine massage therapy has shown to reduce muscle fatigue, inflammation with the structure of the muscle, or tightness within the muscle or tendon.

2. Improve the horses suppleness

Similar to increasing the horses flexibility, massage therapy for horses can also show an improvement in suppleness. Suppleness directly relates to a combination of unrestricted movement within a horses muscles, tendons, ligaments or joints.

3. Assist the horses recovery process

Equine massage therapy is a wonderful method to aid muscle recovery in a horse.

Providing your horse with massage therapy will help free the body from muscle fatigue and cramps by increasing the oxygen within the blood and helping to replenish and repair any damaged muscles or tendon fibres.

4. Providing pain relief to the horse

Massaging encourages the release of endorphins which in turn provides the horse with a rush of positive hormones. This has shown to help short term relieve pain.

As well as providing pain relief; massage therapy can also help reduce lactic acid build up which in turn will reduce soreness and cramping muscles.

5. Improve circulation in the horse

During a massage session the pressures applied within the treatment will help increase circulation within the system helping muscles to receive better nourishment, oxygen and hydration.

Massage therapy has also been shown to impact the lymphatic system by helping to eliminate waste toxins and reduce fluid build up; often associated with thoroughbreds and horses who are not regularly mobile.

6. Prevention of injuries

Often when caring for our horse we react to the now-and-then. It is widely viewed that providing an ongoing program to your horse aimed at preventing an injury is an important step to maintaining a sound horse.

7. Help to diagnose an injury

As well as treating an injury or condition, equine massage therapy can also be an effective way to diagnose a problem area in a horses body.

8. Help to effect the horses psychological issues

Providing horses with specific massage techniques which relate to the horse’s poll and neck has shown to transform a horses demeanour and behaviour - in some cases created impact on the most timid or fearful horses in just a few sessions.

9. Help keep your horse in 'tip-top' shape

10. Help to keep your horse happy

Massage plays a key part in the physical and emotional wellbeing of your horse.

‼️We are please to inform all our clients that now during the treatment sessions of your horses, we will be using the Red Light Therapy Poll Cap .‼️

The benefits are huge ,as pain and tension anywhere in the horse's body is reflected in the poll. And when tension accumulates in the poll, it affects the rest of the body. For example: Pain in the forelimb or foot can cause tension and pain through the muscles in the neck and into the muscles of the poll and atlas.

Red light therapy for horses works by absorbing red light into multiple layers of soft tissue, speeding up the formation of new capillaries. This results in increased circulation and blood flow. It can help speed healing from soft tissue injuries, wounds, or other inflammation causes.

Benefits of the equissage for my horse.

Enhances recovery from work or injury, oxygenates the blood, reduces swelling and joint discomfort prevents lactic acid build-up and the accumulation of toxins. Equissage CVT improves blood flow while also helping remove toxins via the lymphatic system.

When should I do stretches on my horse?

Stretching exercises are more effective on “warm” muscles because the soft tissue is more elastic, easier to stretch, and less likely to be damaged. Thus the best time to stretch your horse is after a short warm-up routine or after your workout. You should plan on taking about 10 minutes to perform the exercises. Slow, gentle stretches are more effective and less likely to cause injury to you or your horse. Never jerk or pull against a horse that is resisting. Simply stop and ask again.

Remember the saying, “Rome was not built in Day”, start slow, and ask for partial stretches. Start with easy stretches and work on increasing the time and length of the stretch. Encourage the horse to stretch as far as he feels comfortable, never stretching beyond his limits. Overstretching can cause injuries. Adding a stretching exercise program to your horse’s workout routine should increase your horse’s flexibility, over time.

🐴♦️How often should I have my
Horse Massaged♦️🐴

It all depends on the workload of the horse, his/her conformation, health history, footing, tack fit and extent of injuries (if any). If a horse has a heavy workload, two massages per month may be in order. For the "average" horse, one massage every 4-6 weeks is typically sufficient.

Signs that a HORSE is releasing TENSION, when they are getting a Massage/Equissage.

Some subtle signs of relaxation and tension release can include resting a leg, stretching of a limb or the neck, soft eye movements and blinking, relaxed posture, a loose lower lip, jaw or tongue movement, twitches of the skin, and changes in breath. Licking and chewing, or sometimes repeated yawning and shaking of the head.

Yesterday I massaged a horse and he yawned 23 times , bizarre ☺️☺️was so happy I could assist him to release soo much tension.

EQUISSAGE PULSE BENEFITS

This is Dell 3 days later after his Massage and Equissage, feeling much better, and walking with more comfort.🙂

20/02/2024

I was asked to massage Dell to see if I could assist him with his lameness. He was given an hours Equissage , also used the Equissage handheld on him. He released alot of tension when I massaged him on his sore areas.

Massage not only can help heal the injury, it does so much more. Equine massages will help maintain muscle tone, address knots and issues related to the muscles/soft tissue compensating for the injury and it will release tension and stress.

Carrot stretches harness the horse's natural movement to enhance vertebral joint range of motion, build core strength and improve flexibility.

Practicing carrots stretches daily will result in enhanced flexibility, core strength, and balance within 2-3 weeks. It is important to ensure the safety of both the horse and the handler during each exercise.

Stretching the muscles is an important part of maintaining overall muscle health. “We do not think enough about injury prevention. By warming up the horse and then putting it through some stretches, we can increase range of motion and enable the horse to perform more fluidly and to the best of its ability,”

Stretches are a great way to warm up, cool down, and increase flexibility for your horse's muscles. Studies have been done that suggest equine stretches outside of exercise help to improve power and speed, as well as reduce the risk of injury. The best time to stretch your horse is after he has been worked.
