💊 Multimin Evolution @ Pre-Calving 🐮
The benefits are there for the taking:
🦠 Increase trace mineral reserves to optimise immune function, which could reduce the incidence of mastitis & endometritis.
🦶 Support hoof health at calving.
📈 Supports vaccine performance when given concurrently with a vaccine at pre-calving, which could improve colostrum quality for the newborn calf.

Have you ever wondered if a cup of coffee ☕️ could benefit your herd 🐮 as much as it does for a tired farmer? 🧑🌾
The old saying goes:
“Cows that don’t eat will get sick, and cows that get sick won’t eat!”
So we NEED to keep them eating! 🌿 There isn’t a lot out there to stimulate eating in cattle. Something you can reach for is caffeine!
What else can you use it for?
🪫Reviving weak calves!
Based on studies from treating critical newborn babies, it can be extrapolated that prompt treatment with caffeine in weak newborn calves can:
🧠 Reduce lethargy
🫁 Improve breathing ability.
❤️ Improve pumping ability and increase blood pressure.
Best of all, this happens within half an hour of giving the cup of Joe ☕️

🧬 TSU Testing 🧬
The first time I used a tissue sampling unit (TSU), I was converted! No more collecting a big chunk of ear with a notcher or trying to find clean hairs on the tail. Just one click and you’re done ✅
Why I love TSU’s:
💙 Self loads the tissue sample into the collection pot with one click.
💙 Each tube is has a unique barcode (no need to scribble on the tube)
💙 Each sample collection has a CLEAN, FRESH hole punch (no more cleaning the notcher between animals!)
💙 Less time at the dirty end 💩 of the cow
I use TSU’s for:
🧬 DNA Testing
🦠 Herd Pestivirus Carrier Screening
🐂 Bull Pestivirus Carrier Status when performing fertility testing
Give them a try.. you won’t regret it!

We’re back with a BANG!
⚠️ Uterine Prolapses ⚠️
They’re big.
They’re nasty.
They’re EASILY treatable!!
How can you tell it’s a uterine prolapse?
✅ It’s always immediately post-calving.
✅ It has ‘buttons’ on its surface (cotyledons).
✅ It’s ENORMOUS.
Follow these steps for a good outcome:
1️⃣ Call for help ASAP. The longer the uterus is out, the lower the chance of a good outcome 🐮
2️⃣ If she’s standing and close to the yards, SLOWLY walk her up.
3️⃣ If she starts running, give her space. She’ll lie down after some time. All that bouncing will tear the arteries and cause a fatal bleed.
4️⃣ If she’s down, LEAVE HER THERE. A vet can treat these in the paddock.
Poor outcomes 💔 occur when the uterus is badly damaged or an artery ruptures. These only happen if she’s STANDING and RUNNING 🏃

Unfortunately there is no cure for animals persistently infected with BVD 😔 but the pinkeye should resolve and vision will improve!!
🦠 PESTIVIRUS (BVD) 🦠
When pregnant cattle are exposed to this virus at the right time (up to 17 weeks gestation) before the foetus has developed immunocompetence, it sneaks into the foetus and camps out.
When born, the calf’s immune system doesn’t recognise this virus and allows it to stay - this is why they are called ‘persistenly infected’ (PI).
This PI becomes a new source to infect other suspectible animals and the process starts over!
BVD has been detected in up to 80% of herds across Australia and it’s something I recommend testing for at every opportunity because this virus is a smiling assassin!!
👉 WHAT CAN YOU DO? 👈
1️⃣ Establish your Pesti-Status
Do you know if you have Pestivirus in your herd? If not, blood test some young stock asap! You only need to test 5-6 animals minimum or 5% of the group.
2️⃣ Be wary of PTIC Cattle
Purchasing pregnant stock into your herd is an excellent way to bring BVD straight through the front gate. Ask the vendor for their BVD management plan before purchasing.
3️⃣ Maintain Boundary Fences
Just because you have excellent biosecurity doesn’t mean your neighbour, Agnes, is doing the same. Be wary of grazing pregnant animals along boundary fences (they can catch over the fence) and consider double fencing high risk areas.
4️⃣ Vaccination
Simple protection can be achieved with Pestigard from @livestocksolutions.zoetis
This step is not suitable for every operation. Always speak to your vet (or me!) to determine if vaccination is right for your herd.
Still unsure? Reach out if you have questions! I love talking all things PESTI!
