This was such a neat work up case. This horse was showing lameness under saddle but not in hand during a lameness exam. As we have a dressage arena, these tricky lamenesses can easily be worked up. We ultrasounded the hind suspensories, watched him under saddle, then blocked the lame leg & had him re ridden. He blocked out completely & the lameness resolved. He has subsequently gone on to surgery & the surgeon confirmed our diagnosis. He is now with Atkinson Equine Centre for his rehabilitation & we are excited to see how he goes when he returns to work.

A week ago we had a true dummy foal (neonatal maladjustment syndrome) born. He had a strong heartbeat while his umbilical cord remained attached (and bless his mum for not getting up) however he wasn’t breathing or moving AT ALL! We started to breath for him & he gradually began to breath and move. He was not able stand or feed. He responded mildly to the Madigan Squeeze technique.. & developed a weak suckle reflex & became more alert. Due to him having the most fabulous owner we were able to refer him to Randwick Equine where he has received the most amazing round the clock care under Dr Darien Feary & her team. We can’t thank you all enough. He came home today with little signs of being a ‘stillborn’ foal. What an amazing journey he took us all on

Osteochondromas: benign but irritating!

As vet Dr Maxine Brain explains, osteochondromas are abnormal bony growths that develop towards the end of a bone, generally in the vicinity of a growth plate.
