You can do what you put mind to! π₯°
This is why in our training sessions, I like to focus a lot on the owner - their mindset to training and their expectations and goals with their dog.
If you don't believe the goals you want to want to reach with your dog is possible, you won't succeed.
If you have a mindset where you are open to learning, flexible to adjust your approach and are willing to push yourself to grow and get uncomfortable - you will get there!
Ps - you'll know you've got a got reward system in place when you say 'yes' and your dog comes barrelling back to you! Good work Iggs!
Dex lives in an apartment block and is overstimulated as soon as he hits the sidewalk.
He has a lot of energy which gets channelled into frustration on the leash (on tight sidewalks) and reactions to other dogs and the environment.
He doesn't have an interest for toys outside (and is not interested in food in busy environments- as many can relate!) - but loves to smell and explore!
So to benefit Dex and what he needs - we took his training to the park and worked him on a long line.
He was able to take food and engage with me - which is very difficult and sometimes impossible for him in his busy surroundings at home.
We started to work on some basic training with regular breaks and rewards to take in the environment.
Nothing I'm doing here is fancy or complicated - which is exactly how training should be! This is something his owners can start to do to help build value in them and provide exercise and an appropriate outlet for him.
Training doesn't start in busy environments - it starts in your home, at parks and in areas where your dog can be successful first. Then once they understand what you want and you have more control and understanding of your pup, you can conquer busier environments!

Got a nervous dog or one who is overly stimulated in new environments?
Go back to basics and work on setting realistic expectations that your dog can achieve while outside.
So if your dog struggles to walk well on leash with limited distractions - avoid trying to work on this in environments they are overwhelmed in.
I see this being a huge frustration for dog and owner - meaning no one wins.
Instead - work on play in new environments, reward your dog for any engagement with you and work on building their confidence around things that are challenging to them.
The beauty of new environments is that it gives you an opportunity to be a better teacher and guide for your dog and allows you to learn more about your dog.

Today we continued work on Ragnar's leash skills.
No - we didn't start this for the first time in a new environment.
We worked on conditioning the tools separately and building his motivation up around the home first.
This video was just down the street and he already was much more distracted - just because your dog knows something at home, doesn't mean it generalises in a new environment.
At the start you'll see him on a harness as we did some play to begin, before I swap him over for some training on the head collar.
You'll notice his motivation to engage is much higher and he is happy to do so on a loose leash - this is what I always strive for in training.
It will take more work to build the foundations but once you have them (and it's done well) - you have a well trained and happy dog at the end of it.
We all know training is a forever process as we grow with our dog - but if you start the work early, it becomes easier and more rewarding for all much quicker!
Ragnar is 1yr old and is currently in a spooked by a lot of things outside- I'll be doing some sessions to advance his training whilst also continuing to expose him to new things in a fun way!

There's always more to learn π₯°
Sometimes when I go to share a video, I'm quickly humbled by how much I still have yet to learn with training - but that's exactly what I love about it.
Every dog and owner teaches me something new - and I love the challenge.
Growing up I always loved people, animals and problem solving - and I've been blessed with the ability that my mission encompasses all 3!
For the dog owners out there on your journey training your dog - it can be so helpful to film your sessions. Sometimes when you take a look from the outside, it can become clear on what you need to work on next.
I really aim to find the humour when training - even when it feels frustrating or like you're taking steps backwards some days.
Remember to play with your pup each day π₯° don't take training too seriously that you can't stop to have a laugh or appreciate the moment you're in. Training your dog isn't an overnight process - it takes time but is so worth it.
Happy weekend ππ

Those who have leash reactive dogs - have you heard any of these comments before? πββοΈ
I know I certainly have (or clients have told me themselves that they were told it.)
Yes - every dog is different and we need to approach each situation to help the individual owner and dog.
However, some big no's (and I know from experience) is to constantly avoid the trigger, not provide clarity to your dog and hold them accountable or to allow your dog to rehearse bad behaviours.
A lot of the time, leash reactivity isn't something that sits alone.
Most of the time, the dog doesn't have engagement with the owner, they rush through thresholds, they don't listen around minimal distractions, the dog is allowed to make his own choices in all moments and their is no accountability in place.
Working on leash reactivity can be quite complex - but what I do know for sure is that if you're only hoping for your dog to change (without you also putting in the work on you too) - it will be a challenging journey.
Confidence comes from making progress and working through things that make you uncomfortable. It doesn't need to be a long journey to get there.

Sharing some training tips of things I've found valuable when travelling with my dogs.
You can keep up with it wherever you go, is super simple and is a great idea if you're in hotel spaces, apartments or smaller accommodation.
It's important for us to keep up wiith our dog's training if we want to be able to enjoy new places with them, and be allowed to come back ππ€£
It's also important that they are getting fulfilment through regular exercise, play, training and a healthy diet π
As I've always said, it's part of our lifestyle VS something we just DO with our dogs.
One thing we had struggled with at times was keeping up a routine for our dogs when on the road - but it just made us realise just how powerful it really is for them having structure in their days!
What do you struggle with most when on the road with dogs and when staying in accommodation?

I know there's a lot of owners struggling with their dog's reactivity, pulling and general behaviour on leash.
A lot of this can stem from lack of engagement with you, frustration on the leash, previous bad experiences on leash and a lack of genetic fulfilment overall.
3 things I suggest to start on:
β‘οΈ working on creating a better relationship with your dog around limiter distractions first (play and using your dog's daily meal are great for this.) Have fun with your dog!
β‘οΈ teaching your dog what you do expect of them on leash (ideally there is no pressure from the leash unless when you're needing to give them more guidance.) I'll be sharing more tips on this!
β‘οΈ start small then build up (work around your house first then build to higher distractions for your dog)
Training shouldn't just be about your dog! It should be an activity you do together- so be sure to work on your skills also. I love helping owners build their confidence so they can be the best owner they can for themselves and their dogs.
If you're really struggling or need a safe space to learn and practice your skills, I'll be setting up some adventure walks and group classes very soon!
Drop a π₯ in the comments if you're interested!

Chester at Mandurah Foreshore
Proud of this little man today!
I took him to Mandurah Foreshore to expose him to ALL the things - mainly people and dogs and the few Xmas decorations π€£
We didn't plan on much formal training today - more so socialisation, but he did SO well we did some active training too!
We only did one session at his house prior to this and he was able to listen and take direction around heaps of people and even passed a few dogs too!
We had a dog reacting a few metres away and he chose to come to me and play with the tug toy instead.
Super proud of this boy and so is his owner!
What a great reminder to never underestimate what your dog is capable of. Don't be afraid to challenge them and expose them to new environments. Walk a different route, mix up your training that day - you might be greatly surprised with the results!
Working On Calmness While We Clean
Training calmness in the house doesn't happen overnight.
In fact, there's a lot of boring work that goes on behind the scenes that quite often doesn't get shared or discussed.
Finding pockets of your everyday, like preparing dinner, cleaning the house, watching your favourite series - that are all opportunities to train your dog if you put in the extra time.
Kobe has been doing great with his calmness in the house (whining and pacing have reduced), however, we brought out the vacuum and it was a struggle.
This is what it takes if you want a calm dog in the house - setting up situations, helping them become successful, putting in the work and staying consistent.
Don't be discouraged if it looks messy during the process - actually embrace it, as it will happen!
It's what you do in those moments that really make all the difference for your dog!
