Preparing for Spring
This post is focusing on what you need to have on hand if your bird has babies, and not an encouragement to allow your birds to breed. We do not recommend backyard breeding or breeding without proper support from an avian vet or experienced breeder/carer.
Spring is here in Australia, and many pet birds are becoming hormonal and may even lay accidentally clutches, or you may have a pair of birds that you want to breed but don't realize how much can go wrong.
Do not provide a nest box if you do not want your birds to breed, but if you've already done this and it's too late - ensure you have the following on hand incase you need to take over:
1. Brooder/Incubator with a heat globe (do not use ceramic globes unless you have a globe cage)
2. Thermostat that automatically turns the globe on and off when it reaches desired temperature
3. Syringes
4. Avian Feeding Spoon (optional)
5. Food thermometer such as one used for coffee milk
6. Measuring cup (cough medicine ones work well as they go to 20-25ml)
7. Hand Rearing Formula (Passwell is the one we use)
8. Hand towels
9. Puppy pads or spare nesting material
10. Various sized bowls to place the chicks in and nest them with nesting material
11. The phone number of an avian vet incase of crop stasis, aspiration, splayed leg, injury from hen etc
Other important things to have on hand for breeding birds are:
1. Calcium supplement
2. Good quality food such as high quality seed, pellets and fresh vegetables
3. Vetafarm Spark (for emergencies if the hen collapses)
Again, this is not to encourage breeding but to help those who are new to birds and may not realize until too late.

Asiatic Parrots have a very high pitched flock call, a lot of people don't realise this when they purchase them as a baby or don't do enough research. In the video you can see that Zazu the Alexandrine has a deeper, longer call and Kenai the Indian Ringneck has a much faster "pew pew pew" scream.
Always consider this before adding an Asiatic parrot to your family - especially if you share a wall with a neighbour, have children, or noise sensitive family members.
Adopt don't shop: Kenai was adopted Kiwi's New Life Bird Rescue and Zazu was from AviRescue Victoria ππ€ and the one being cheeky in the background is Isuzu who was adopted as a stray bird.
