The misconception on male dogs.

I must say on a personal level males are my favourite for temperament and companionship ❤️

I have had many messages with people not wanting males and having fairly negative veiw's on them. Mostly getting comments on behaviour and loyalty.

I have to say all males I have owned (I would always pick a male for a pet personally) have the softest, most loyal and loving temperaments. When desexed at the right time and trained well I have never had issues with marking, ecssesive barking or dominance in my pet males.

You would definitely have slight differences in entire males and in a kennel environments but even now in my case my females would be more dominate, bark more often, mark and be my version of rude lol all my males are just love bugs 🥰

I wanted to write this post more for anyone who may consider a male in the future or who hasn't owned one, I think you'd be plesently surprised.

Answering some more questions 📚

Is there a difference in temperament between and long and a smooth coat Chihuahua?
I can only speak from personal experience and others may feel differently.
I think smooth coats often have a more hyper, intense (some may say neurotic) temperament. They're very social and fun loving but more dog if you understand me. Long coats for me are much softer, more sensitive and I find them to be less intense over all. I still have different temperaments within my Long's, some more lap dog type verses a more social long coat but they're sweeter in my eyes.

Are Chihuahua's great with children?
I find Chihuahua to be wonderful family pets and fantastic with young kids. I think a few factors play a part here, how are the children raised with pets and what temperament is in the Chihuahua, not all Chihuahua's suit child homes but 90% do and love it.
I do see many breeders not home Chihuahua's to young family's for the reason Chihuahua are small I think this comes down to education, boundaries and picking the right Chihuahua for your family. This is why I pick Chihuahua's for families based on personality and not looks/colour.

Are there any specific health issues with this breed?

The Chihuahua itself has health issues like all breeds can, some that are more common to them specifically, I will put a list below, some of these can be genetic, some can be from the environment/ owners over time.

- Luxating patella (genetic / obesity / environment eg jumping on and off furniture)

- Dental/ gum disease (genetic/ more so environment/ diet)

- Obesity (environment)

- Diabetes (environment/ rarely genetic)

- Hypoglycemia (commonly seen in puppies/ smaller Chihuahua's due to low sugar levels - environment over genetic)

- Tracheal collapsing (genetic / obesity)

- Fatty liver (dietary/ environmental)

All issues with the correct environment can be managed and often avoided especially through good breeding. All breeders will find mistakes at some point but it's about acknowledgment and change to improving the breed over time.

This leads into another question are Chihuahua's known for being yappy/ consistent barkers?

Like above there are traits about the breed that are very common and we see over a large percentage of Chihuahua's due to the typical type of owners and environment that they are in.

There are a few different personality types within the breed that I commonly see and not all are suited to every environment, but when placed/ raised in the right environment, these dogs thrive and are incredibly confident, social, stable, happy dogs that love being dog's! If you get my hint.

They're a dog that thrive off boundaries and strong leadership. All my dog's can be vocal when needed but none of my dog's have bite, none are consistently yappy, none are unsocial. I often get asked if I have pure Chihuahua's because of the temperament they have.

This is important when looking for a breeder, you want someone who can educate, support and cover the dog for any issues (physical/ behavioural) that arise through the life of your pet.

*RETIREMENT HOME*

We are looking for something very specific. We would love an older couple or women. Low foot traffic within the home and ideally no other animals or another Chihuahua.

This girl is 4yo, she is toilet and crate trained and she loves her own kind (other Chihuahua's)
She is a sensitive girl and takes time to warm up but once she knows you it's all love and snuggles. She'll will be your best friend and such a wonderful companion if given the time.

She was raised in another kennel to ours and lacked exposure when young making her less confident as an adult with cats, larger dogs, high energy and busy homes. Although she is exposed to this everyday now inc young kids I know it's not her most suited environment. She has not put a foot wrong but can be reactive vocally (barks) when it's too much.

She is desexed, dental health is great, up to date with vet work and prevention.
She is ready to go!!

👋 Hello Voyage all the way from Spain. Such a beautiful boy!

We decided to go ahead and get our own intensive care unit (humidity crib) to better monitor and stabilise temperature, humidity and oxygen. The little blue machine on the floor creates its own oxygen over hiring a bottle each time. Our beautiful boys are getting oxygen therapy daily to help with their lungs. I just love how oxygenated / pink they are in here 🩷
