Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus is a member of the Nimbochromis family. This group of cichlid belong to Lake Malawi and Lake Malombe, these fish are amazing ambush predators with a very unique hunting style. These predators are often seen lying motionless on the lakes bottom near rocks where mbuna live, even adopting an unusual sideways position. This behaviour is incredibly rare to be seen in fish. When smaller fish approach, the Nimbochromis will "wake up" and try to seize them, earning them the nickname ‘sleeper cichlids’ or kaligono by the locals. The male fuscotaeniatus can grow up to 30cm and females slightly smaller. This impressive cichlid is a big must for any Malawi predator tank.

Copadichromis Chrysonotus is a species which can be found throughout Lake Malawi. They inhabit the open waters in sheltered bays. They only swim above the rocks just below the surface of the water. Their mating ritual looks as though they are mating on the sand or rocks, however the eggs are released into the open water and immediately taken up by the female in her mouth. The male only fertilizes the eggs when the female already has the eggs in her mouth. A stunning and strange looking cichlid.

The second part is “chromis”. An ancient name for colourful cichlids, once thought to be related to the colourful damsels and wrasses of the sea. The placeholder “Jalo” is a reference to the location of Jalo Reef’s origin.
