The banks of the Merri Creek have been used as a site for food production for thousands of years. Our two and a half acre organic market garden sits upon the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri. Our two and a half acre organic market garden is Melbourne’s last surviving inner city market garden, having been farmed continuously by Chinese and Italian gardeners for over 150 years. In 2003 CERES began fa

rming here under the guidance of Joe Garita. Previously known as the Merri Creek Market Garden, Joe's Market Garden is a commercial market garden growing mostly leafy greens, herbs and and fruiting vegetables such as cherry tomatoes, zucchini and capsicum. All produce grown is sold through CERES Fair Food, our own delivery veggie boxes, and a farm gate stall every day from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. If you are interested in volunteering please see the volunteer page on the ceres.org.au website.

Ever wonder about our systems on the farm?

The rubber band carabiner has been a game changer for our team! (Thanks !)

Every harvest day, we start by counting out rubber bands out into piles of 10. Then we look at our harvest list and count up all the different bunches we need for each variety of veg. We add a couple of extra rubber bands per variety (just in case we lose some along the way)

When we go out into the field, we have exactly the number of bands we need to harvest so we don't ever have to count as we go.

After we wash the veg, we count everything as we put them in crates for our orders.

We have so many amazing people helping out on the farm! User-friendly systems like this are so important for the efficiency of the farm and our team.

We love to chat systems! Let us know if you have any game changers that we have to try 😊

Yesterday's cutest frosty vegetable award goes to... the baby cos! πŸ‘Ά πŸ₯¬

We haven't had a hard frost in a couple of years, and it was welcomed with open arms.

A frost is like a sugar coating for our veggies! Some plants are able to convert their starch stores into sugar, which means frost actually makes veggies sweeter!

Come to our farm gate to grab some sugar-coated veggies πŸ˜‹

Every Saturday from 8:30am-1pm

You can also find our veggies or order your veggies boxes 🌱

If you have walked past the farm within the last week, you will have noticed that we have said goodbye to our beautiful flowers.

The flowers brought so much joy to us all! It was very sad to say goodbye.

Thank you so much to everyone who came to pick flowers or bought bunches from the farm gate. Your support means so much to our little farm! We love our community!

We can't wait to plant them again in spring!

Wishing our Muslim community a Ramadan Mubarak (meaning Happy Ramadan) πŸŒ™

Our Story

Our two acre organic market garden is on Wurundjeri Country. The banks of the Merri Creek have always been used as a site for food production and stock management. It is also the site of Melbourne’s last surviving inner city market garden, having been farmed continuously by Chinese and Italian gardeners for over 150 years. In 2003 CERES began farming here under the guidance of Joe Garita, whose father bought the land in 1945. Previously known as the Merri Creek Market Garden, Joe's Market Garden is our second certified organic farm growing organic herbs and vegetables. It is named after Joe Garita. Family and friends remember Joe as a hardworking individual who was kind to everyone he encountered. His memory lives on in Joe’s Garden, which continues to flourish even after his passing. Joe’s wife, Jean Garita, believes that Joe would be proud of the work that continues in Joe’s Garden, as the garden continues to grow food and foster relationships, which were two of the most important aspects of Joe’s life. Irrigation water is taken from the mains supply and a 100,000 litre underground water tank collects rainwater from neighbouring town houses. All produce grown is sold through our CERES Fair Food enterprise or our Farm Gate each Saturday morning between 9-1.

We are assisted by volunteers on a Wednesday and Fridays, if you are interested in volunteering with us come by between 9:30-1 or email [email protected] We also have a corporate volunteer program with staff from different organisations joining us each week to escape the office, get their hands dirty and help us grow food for our community. To find out more about joining our corporate volunteer program please email [email protected]
