🐾 Bruce 🐾
This is Bruce. Bruce has bitten several children. Bruce is not aggressive.
Unfortunately he has had his body language misinterpreted for several years, leaving him with very few options to communicate his severe discomfort, particularly around young people.
To a lot of dogs, children are unpredictable and scary; they’re loud, erratic and smell weird. It’s important to understand what your dog communicating, if the more subtle signs of discomfort (whale eye, lip licking etc) are ignored or misunderstood, the dog has no option but to escalate.
Moving forward with Bruce is possible, but we need to make some serious changes otherwise we’re likely looking more severe bites to kids and euthanasia for the dog.
Dogs like Bruce thrive off three things:
1. Structure and predictability.
2. Boundaries and respect.
3. Neutrality, NOT forced "positive" associations.
I’m exceptionally proud of Bruce’s family for reaching out for help, admitting they’ve been inconsistent, acknowledging they have a problem & being prepared to put the work in.
