🐾 Tui 🐾

I cannot bend over but I can help socialise a baby shark, fun new surfaces/textures, heights, novel sounds & and lot of sitting and observing the world go by.

Still on Maternity Leave, but I couldn’t bloody help myself.

🐾 Porkbun 🐾

So, it’s your job to advocate for and give your dog direction and guidance but what if you’re not quite sure what that entails or you’re a little worried about the practical side of things, or accidentally making the issue worse?

WELL FRIENDS, THAT IS WHAT DOG TRAINERS LIVE FOR.

LET ME SUPPORT YOU WHILE YOU TRAIN YOUR DOG!

(Sorry for yelling)

* Porkbun is ace and his folks are killing it, I’m just using him as a gorgeous poster boy! *

🐾 Henley 🐾

I had the absolute privilege of introducing Henley and his owners to the wonderful world of e-collar usage today!

Henley is deaf & his handlers have put a ton of work into teaching him hand signals but were noticing he was becoming increasingly distracted while in novel locations. Henley is a typical fizzy, bouncy young boxer and we agreed that being able to continue engage with and explore different environments is essential to his wellbeing, but needed a reliable way to communicate with him from a distance so he can continue to have off leash freedom in a safe way.

Working with a beautiful white boxer was super emotional for me (hello pregnant) and I’m so happy I got the opportunity, thank you for the trust Christine & Tom! 🤍

🐾 Mickey 🐾

Mickey is a very stable young dog, he’s a dream to have around the home & family. However, when he’s taken out he pulls like a freight train & gets very excited when seeing rabbits and kangaroos (same, albeit for different reasons), so we’re working on those issues as well as a solid recall.

What a gem.

🐾 Rufus 🐾

Big boy Rufus was recently adopted and his new family were advised he was in a pretty significant accident so needed some assistance working through his spooky behaviour around vehicles.

It’s very important we take into consideration our dog’s emotional wellbeing while moving forward with an appropriate training plan. Stress is a part of life and it’s our job to help our dogs navigate it, or in Rufus’ case, work through it. Addressing a confirmed fear can be a much different approach to a perceived one!

We’re also working on leash skills, improving confidence in general, increasing toy drive (cannot wait till he figures out the joys of TUG) and getting him comfortable with being physically handled by strangers.

Hey guys!

Some of you may have noticed we’ve been a bit more low key at Franks Dogs - I’ve been busy navigating running my small business and growing a human!

In saying that, I will be going on Maternity Leave from mid April. If you’re one of my gorgeous ongoing clients I’m more than happy to recommend you a trainer to continue your journey with, one I know you’ll gel with & I’ll fill them in on the more technical side of the work we’ve been doing together! My network is vast !

Snake Season will be resuming in November - you’re welcome to reserve dates before I go on Mat Leave. I’ll be offering refresher sessions to all existing clients - unfortunately these will not be available to you if your dog was originally trained by someone else, happy to elaborate further via email.

Thank you for your ongoing support 🤍

🐾 Bruce 🐾

This is Bruce. Bruce has bitten several children. Bruce is not aggressive.

Unfortunately he has had his body language misinterpreted for several years, leaving him with very few options to communicate his severe discomfort, particularly around young people.

To a lot of dogs, children are unpredictable and scary; they’re loud, erratic and smell weird. It’s important to understand what your dog communicating, if the more subtle signs of discomfort (whale eye, lip licking etc) are ignored or misunderstood, the dog has no option but to escalate.

Moving forward with Bruce is possible, but we need to make some serious changes otherwise we’re likely looking more severe bites to kids and euthanasia for the dog.

Dogs like Bruce thrive off three things:

1. Structure and predictability.
2. Boundaries and respect.
3. Neutrality, NOT forced "positive" associations.

I’m exceptionally proud of Bruce’s family for reaching out for help, admitting they’ve been inconsistent, acknowledging they have a problem & being prepared to put the work in.

🐾 Doug 🐾

Working with Doug is really great. He’s eager to please, plays like a champ, has a wonderful bond with his handler and they’re both so keen to put in the work!

Fortunately, Doug has been in wonderful hands while growing up, so we’re really just working on preparing him for adulthood and liveability. If you’ve met a bull terrier, you know.

Our goals are: manners around the front door, LLW, dog neutrality, relatable obedience and some impulse control.

We love Doug.

🐾 Milky 🐾

Newly adopted Milky landed a really wonderful, proactive family; they emailed me at 12:45am NYE for help.

She struggled horrifically with the fireworks, so we’re going to incorporate this into our training over the coming months to help her overcome it; stress is not something to avoid but work though together, as well as some dog aggression and general manners around the home.

If your dog also struggles with loud noises or fireworks NOW is the time to address it, NOT December.

🐾 Floki 🐾

Hellloooo handsome! Despite being a stunner, our boy Floki here lacks some social etiquette around other dogs which is now getting him into trouble. In the human world, he’s basically that overly enthusiastic guy at the pub who wants to hug you, a complete stranger, and won’t leave you alone until the situation becomes confrontational.

He’s got some wonderful dog friends with responsible owners and who have complementary play styles, which is awesome, so we shall cherish those while training him to be neutral towards random dogs in public.

Just a reminder, as the weather heats up please take the appropriate steps to keep your dogs cool!

Simple changes like having your dog inside on the hottest days if they’re not already given access, ensuring they have fresh cool water in the shade, walk/exercise early morning or late evening or mental enrichment indoors instead of a walk could just save your dogs life.

Also slip, slop, slap for a white and light coloured dogs. ☀️

I find a lot of dog owners get caught up in exclusivity wanting to treat thr undesirable symptom of a behavioural issue, and fail to truely grasp that training your dog is largely a holistic practice.

So, trust your trainer and DO THE WORK when we recommend seemingly unrelated tasks like teaching a loose lead walk or working on activities like structured play and a place command will help work towards your dog’s behaviour improving.

It might not make total sense to you why having a great crating routine or threshold boundaries in place will benefit say, a better recall or why having really solid obedience would be beneficial for helping your dog not lose their s**t in the car, but your trainer wants to address the root cause of the issues with your dog long term, so trust the process and understand the thay there are sometimes many pieces to the puzzle.

Unrelated photo of some of my absolute favourite regular clients, cause they’re gorgeous. Poppy & Cassius 🐾

🐾 Coco & Wallace 🐾

Live in a multi dog household? Same.

I know first hand how important it is to assess each dog as an individual then implement a training plan so ALL dogs in the home are getting the appropriate training/enrichment/stimulation in order for the home to be a calmer place & outings are a pleasure.

I’m sure you’ve perhaps noticed that one dog by themselves is an angel but together they can be a challenge? This is exactly the reason I offer discounted prices for multi-dog house holds! Multi dog training is multifaceted, let’s tackle it together.

🐾 Harrison 🐾

The subject line for the email I received from Harry’s owners read ‘small but psycho’, which was amusing and alarming at the same time.

Harrison has learned to get what he wants (be that couch time, longer sleep ins or not going outside to toilet) through violence. While he hasn’t had teeth on skin, left without intervention this behaviour would undoubtedly lead to a bite.

Harrison has lost all his privileges and for the foreseeable future has lots of structure and boundaries so we can re-teach him that home is a shared space and despite being a different species, it is possible to explain expectations in a way he can comprehend.

While this might sound harsh, the alternative would likely have lead to a complete break down in relationship, a bite and Harrison’s future in uncertainty.

Proud of his owners for reaching out for help.

I don’t even have the words to describe the last 3 days. Learning from Michael Ellis was life changing & career altering. Everyone, including myself, who attended the seminar is so lucky.

Thank you endlessly to everyone involved in the coordination of bringing him to Australia & hosting such a special event, also to Michael for being so generous, patient and magical.

🐾 Maggie 🐾

If you know me, you’re aware I have a soft spot for vanilla flavoured bully breed dogs (I own three!), and Maggie was no exception. Not to be dramatic, but I would die for her.

She’s been in her new home for a week & has been adjusting well, her owners just wanted a refresher and guidance on having a young dog in the home again since it had been over a decade since they had their last pup!

Maggie needed a bit of help making some good choices around to jumping, counter surfing & walking on a loose lead. A new environment is an amazing way to start afresh and explain clear rules.

We started training a Place command, but it was very evident she learned previously in a wonderful foster home! Such a brilliant surprise!

🐾 Louis (silent S) 🐾

It’s so important that we realise not all dogs are 100% dog social & it’s a lot of pressure to put on them to be overtly ‘friendly’. That’s why I always train for neutrality & insist on advocacy from the handler/owner.

🐾 Sprocket 🐾

I’m always able to cater my puppy programs to meet your individual needs as a dog owner, with this gorgeous boy we’re heavily focusing in recall around livestock, loose lead walking, reliable Place command (so he can safely attend the workplace) and preventing genetically predisposed behaviours like car/bike chasing & owner resource guarding. PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE.

Handsome Sulley needed some help working on his arousal around other dogs. It’s really important we work our dogs needs/personalities/breed traits and not against them!

Clear communication, a ton of impulse control practice & loads structured play will really help him navigate the world & help his owner keep her arms in their sockets.

🐾 Willow 🐾

Willow really finds chasing and nipping at the tyres of bicycles (& the feet of the people riding them!) a wonderful game. Her owners struggle to walk her & trust her off lead anywhere around paths or places bikes could be!

Genetics are a massive factor at play here but in order to reliably ensure the habit is curbed, we need a way to ensure her biological needs are met and a way to let her know that bikes aren't for chasing.

I highly recommend (and very frequently do!) anyone with a suburban herding breed seek out facilities like to help your dog put the puzzle pieces together in a safe and controlled environment 💡

Working with Rome and his owners on some reactive behaviour due to some over socialisation (he was a super cute puppy, I get it), lead pulling, recall, house manners & general obedience.

He excelled today & his folks should be super proud of raising such a sound pup & his progress in such a short period of time.
