I am a dedicated and compassionate small animal general practice veterinarian with an accidental shift into the field of dentistry. My story is one of transformation from an initial aversion to dental care to aspiring to be a leading advocate for oral health in the veterinary industry. My journey in veterinary medicine began with a strong dislike for dentistry, a sentiment shared by many in the pr

ofession. However, my passion for animals and unwavering commitment to their well-being led me down a path of discovery and growth. Over the years, I have not only conquered my initial hesitation but has also made it my mission to educate others in the veterinary field about the critical importance of dental care for patients in our care. I understand the profound impact that oral health can have on overall pet health and quality of life. This understanding propelled me to delve into the world of veterinary dentistry, determined to bridge the gap between traditional veterinary education and the specialized knowledge required for effective dental care. Not content with improving my own skills as a veterinary dentist, I am now dedicated to educating fellow veterinarians and aspiring students. Drawing from my own transformative journey, I am committed to sharing the knowledge and insights I wish I had learned during my university years. Visited Mont Albert Veterinary Surgery yesterday to do some more training with this amazing team.

We explored anaesthetics and discussed the latest WSAVA and AAFP guidelines and how they can implement these into their practice.

This is the 4th time I have been at this clinic teaching. I've also provided locum services in the past.

It's wonderful working with clinic leaders like Nicole Rous that value educating their team so highly.

An interstate training last week at Wauchope NSW.
Several veterinary clinics sent staff to Wauchope veterinary clinic on Friday and Saturday last week for 12+ hours of intensive dentistry training
It is wonderful to see regional veterinary clinics banding together and investing in the education of their staff in key learning areas of veterinary medicine.

Think about the ergonomics of your dental work station.

Spending 2 to 3 hours hunched over a patient will not do your neck, shoulders or back any favours.

What is your favourite trick to look after your body?

Mine is operating loupes. They make me sit much straighter while working.

Great feedback regarding in clinic training days is always welcome. I received this email a while ago, but wanted to share it with you too.

Hi Nicole,
You ran a dental training for us at ###x recently and today has been my first dental since then. 15yo JRT with a grade 5/6 Heart Murmur. It took me 2.5hours, however your tips and training made it a much smoother process for me, I didn't even swear once! My only root fractures were those severely resorbed ones. Normally I can never fully remove ankylosed teeth but this time I managed!

Just wanted to say a big thank you! Your session made this dental far more enjoyable and successful than it otherwise would have been.

Looking after your veterinary equipment is part of offering a great dental service to your clients.

Please don't store your sharp equipment in a box all jumbled together like this image.

Several things happen
The heavy handles of your elevators damage the delicate ends of your periodontal scalers
Your can end up with broken equipment or dulled equipment from it all rubbing together
You end up searching through a sea of equipment trying to find the right one, which takes time
You end up dirtying the entire box of equipment and then your nurses curse you while they are cleaning it all and resterilising it.

Consider separating out your kits into separate sterilization cassettes
1. An examination kit with tartar removal forceps and a sickle explorer /depth probe
2 Luxators and elevators
3. Extraction kit (for gum flaps and suturing.
