This time of the year we see many itchy, scratchy pets. Dogs in particular 🐶 Often they present with nasty infections that are usually secondary to underlying allergies. We diagnose this infection using cytology - the examination of cells under the microscope. The first picture shows a mixed yeast and bacterial infection and the following pictures are of yeast and bacteria wreaking havoc on the skin and ears of some of our patients. The sweetest brothers, Finnegan and Theodore, recently had their dental procedures together. We were pleased they both went smoothly and were soon feeling like themselves again. Nurse Hannah took them for a cute little stroll in the sunshine, letting them enjoy some fresh air (with a lot of cuddles, of course!) before heading home. 🌞

🎄 Holiday Hazards/Toxic Foods for Pets 🎄

The festive season is here, but let’s keep it safe for our furry friends! 🐶🐱 Here’s a quick guide on common holiday foods and items to keep away from your pets:

🍫 Chocolate – A no-go for dogs and cats. Dark chocolate is especially dangerous.

🍇 Grapes & Raisins – Can cause kidney failure, even in small amounts.

🧅 Onions & Garlic – Found in many holiday dishes, these can damage red blood cells.

🍬 Sugar-Free Goodies – Xylitol (in sugar-free candies/gum) is highly toxic, leading to liver damage.

🍷 Alcohol – Even a small sip can cause severe reactions.

🌰 Nuts – Especially macadamias, which can cause weakness, vomiting, and tremors.

🎁 Leftover Fatty Foods – Too rich for their tummies; can cause pancreatitis.

🍭 Candy Canes & Wrappers – Choking hazards and can cause digestive blockages.

🍖 Leftover Bones from Meat – Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or internal damage.

✨ Tinsel & Ribbons – Irresistible to pets but can lead to dangerous blockages if ingested.

🌱 Poinsettias, Mistletoe & Holly – Festive plants that can be toxic if nibbled.
