🐾 Vet Nurse Day Lunch! 🐾

Yesterday we celebrated our wonderful vet nurses with a delicious lunch spread across our Hastings and Somerville clinics! The amazing platters and grazing boxes were prepared by our very own nurse — and talented Made to Graze owner — Jess 🧀💐

Jess added some special veterinary-inspired touches, including themed cheeses and sweet biscuits that made the spread extra memorable! 💙🐾

With picnic weather and outdoor events back on the agenda, be sure to keep made.tograze in mind for your next occasion — you won’t be disappointed! 🌞🐶🐾

✨✨ Meet our Pets Monday- October ✨✨

This month vet Jess introduces Pumba, the 8-year-old Irish Wolfhound cross!

We adopted him from a shelter when he was just 11 weeks old 🥰 and he’s been the most wonderful companion ever since. He’s convinced he’s a lap dog and has absolutely no idea how big he really is.

Loves: walks on the beach, snacks (especially cheese), everyone he meets.
Hates: thunder, fireworks and being put on a diet after eating too many snacks.

Pumba shares his yard with 2 chooks called Gladys and Sadie who love to dig up the garden and very occasionally lay an egg in random places.

🌟 Case of the Month – Janda the Lab 🌟

A few weeks ago, Janda suddenly became weak in her back legs. After referral for a CT scan and spinal fluid testing, the most likely cause for her presentation was an FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism) – sometimes called a “spinal stroke.” This happens when a small piece of disc material blocks blood flow to part of the spinal cord, leading to sudden weakness or paralysis.

Dr Abbey has been treating Janda with several sessions of acupuncture, and we’re thrilled to report that she’s now back to enjoying short walks at the park! 🐾💛

✨ How acupuncture helps:
• Reduces pain and inflammation
• Improves blood flow and healing
• Supports recovery of the nervous system

Treatment should ideally start as soon as possible after injury, and the tiny needles are placed in gentle, non-stressful positions for your pet.

If you’d like to know whether acupuncture could help your pet, please contact our team. 💬🐶🐱

🔨 Somerville Build Update 🐾

Our new clinic is taking shape! The building is now fully clad and the first base coat of paint is on. Electrical and ventilation works are underway, and the concrete has been poured for the verandah and entry ramp.

Behind the scenes, lots of decisions are being made on flooring, cabinetry and fit out details. Site manager Steven even left his print on the slab — a little mark in history for the new clinic! 👣

We can’t wait to share more progress with you as the clinic comes together.

It’s a battle of the big felines this weekend – Cats vs Lions in Sunday’s grand final! 🐱🦁 While they get ready to face off, here’s a much smaller visitor who stole the show at our Somerville clinic yesterday. This ringtail possum was checked over and, with no injuries found, celebrated with a juicy strawberry snack 🍓💚.

Enjoy the long weekend, and may the best feline win! 🙌

Archie the Corgi visited our Hastings Clinic for a dental and a removal of a canine Oral Epulid. He recovered very well and loves the amazing care he got from our vet nurse Katie while he was in hospital.

🦷 Canine Oral Epulids: What Pet Owners Should Know 🦷

Have you noticed a lump or growth on your dog’s gums? One possible cause is an oral epulis—a common type of benign (non-cancerous) gum tumor in dogs.

📌 Key points about oral epulids:
✔️ They arise from the periodontal ligament (the tissue around the teeth).
✔️ They are usually firm, smooth, and located on the gumline.
✔️ While benign, they can grow large enough to interfere with chewing, displace teeth, or cause discomfort.
✔️ Diagnosis requires veterinary examination, and in many cases, a biopsy.
✔️ Treatment often involves surgical removal, and in some cases extraction of the affected tooth to help prevent regrowth.

⚠️ Not all oral growths are benign—some can be malignant tumors. That’s why it’s important to have any new lumps in your pet’s mouth evaluated promptly.

📞 If you’ve noticed a gum mass, drooling, bleeding, or changes in your dog’s eating habits, schedule an appointment with our team. Early diagnosis and treatment mean the best outcome for your pet.

Yogi the German Short Haired Pointer was at our Somerville clinic for his castration. Yogi was very comfortable recovering as he was by the side of his two favourite vet nurses Lisa and Matilda. He even managed to have a cheeky nap on Matilda’s lap.

🐾 Myth Buster Monday! 🐾

Dr Quincy, along with nurses Meg & Bronte were looking after the lovely Portia this week. They were supplying oxygen as she was recovering from a general anaesthetic procedure 🐶

❌ MYTH: “It’s normal for brachycephalic dogs like Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Bulldogs to snore, snort, or struggle to breathe.”

✅ FACT: These noises aren’t just quirks — they can be signs of Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). Dogs with BOAS may experience:
• Exercising intollerance 🏃‍♂️🐕
• Heat intolerance ☀️
• Disturbed sleep 😴
• Anxiety ❤️‍🩹
• Gagging or regurgitation 🤢
• Blue gums or collapse in severe cases 🚨

💙Our goal is to keep your best friends breathing easier and living their happiest, healthiest lives! If your pet is showing these signs, book a check-up with our team today to discuss treatment and management options.

Gracie the black and white cat was at our Somerville Clinic for a dental procedure. Gracie had marked gingivostomatitis and needed multiple teeth extracted. She enjoyed being bundled up warm during her recovery in hospital. We are happy to report that since her procedure she has recovered very well and now has a happy and healthy mouth.

Feline gingivostomatitis is a chronic and painful inflammatory disease of the mouth that affects some cats. It is characterized by severe inflammation of the gums and oral tissues, often extending beyond what we typically see with routine dental disease.

Clinical signs may include:
✔️ Red, inflamed gums and oral tissues
✔️ Drooling, sometimes with blood
✔️ Halitosis (bad breath)
✔️ Difficulty chewing, dropping food, or reduced appetite
✔️ Weight loss
✔️ Pawing at the mouth or signs of oral discomfort

This condition is thought to result from an abnormal immune response to plaque bacteria, and while it can be challenging to manage, there are treatment options available. These may include medical management, regular dental care, and in many cases, extraction of teeth to reduce inflammation and pain.

📌 Early veterinary intervention is essential—prompt diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve quality of life and comfort for affected cats.

If your cat is showing any of the above signs, please contact our clinic to schedule an examination.
