Roxy the very sweet 5 month old kitten was recently seen at our Somerville clinic. She had quite the sore leg. Luckily her radiographs confirmed no obvious fractures or abnormalities. We are happy to report she has improved a lot with rest and pain relief.
Our vet nurse Sarah absolutely adores Roxy and made sure she got plenty of cuddles during her hospital stay.

🪱 These round worms were vomited up by a young puppy who visited our clinics recently.

Round worms like this not only lead to poor growth especially in young dogs, they can also be a risk of intestinal obstruction in high numbers.

Regular worming with an allwormer (covering for round, hook, whip and tapeworm) is an important step in preventing illness in our pets. Round, hook and tapeworm are zoonotic (can be spread to humans), so regular worming is also vital to prevent illness in our human family members too.

Worm risk varies in dogs and cats depending on their behaviour and diet, but is higher in:
🪱 puppies and kittens,
🪱 animals regularly fed raw meat and animal products
🪱 multidog or poor hygiene environments
🪱 cats living outside or hunting

To discuss your pets intestinal worm risk and worming frequency, speak to one of our team.

🍒 Bert and his cherry eye 🍒

You may remember Bert the St Bernard from his previous appearance on this page when he graduated from puppy school! Several months after that Bert developed a “cherry eye”.

Cherry eye is a condition in dogs where the third eyelid gland (the nictitating membrane) becomes pr*****ed and visible as a red, swollen mass in the corner of the eye.

The function of the nictitating membrane is to contribute to the eye's tear film production and therefore helping to keep the eye moist and healthy. Prolapse of this gland can cause discomfort and potentially lead to other eye problems if untreated.

Certain breeds are more predisposed to cherry eye, including Bulldogs, Cocker Spaniels, Poodles, and Shih Tzus.

Bert had surgical correction of his cherry eye at Hastings Vet and shortly afterwards you can see his eye looks much more comfortable!

Meet Heidi the very lovely kelpie X.

Heidi presented to our Somerville clinic 2 months ago after jumping off the deck and becoming very sore and lame in her back left leg.
Dr. Alistair performed some radiographs of her sore leg and found there was a displaced fracture of one of her toes. He then made a cast to fit her leg and used it to have a splint. Her leg was then splinted with weekly bandage changes to allow the toe time to repair and heal.
Our vet nurses loved ensuring Heidi had creative bandage art to show off each week. They decided to stick with an “H” theme for the art.
After some strict rest and dedication from Heidi’s owner we are happy to report that she is finally split free and doing really well!! Way to go Heidi!

August is National Immunisation Month

National Immunisation Month is dedicated to promoting the importance of vaccines. The aim is to raise awareness about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, the importance of staying up-to-date, and the role of preventing serious diseases.

Dr. Alison saw Zeus and Hera the very cute German shepherd x Australia shepherds for their 2nd puppy vaccinations.

Our core vaccinations for our dogs is the C5 vaccination. This is crucial in protecting our dogs against serious disease such as Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Bordetella and Parainfluenza.

Belle and Pierre came to our Somerville clinic for their 2nd kitten vaccinations. They were rescued from Second Chance Rescue and settling in really well at their new home.

Our core vaccinations in our cats is the F3 vaccination. This is import to prevent feline herpes virus, feline calicvirus, and feline panleukemia. We also vaccinate against feline FIV.

🧵July Case of the Month 🧵

Meet Honey the beautiful Labrador Puppy.

Honey presented to our Somerville clinic to see Dr. Ashley with vomiting and diarrhoea, lethargy and bloated stomach (seen in the first photo).

After an anti nausea injection didn’t help , radiographs were performed at the Hastings clinic. Unfortunately, the radiographs didn’t show the cause of her vomiting, but an abdominal ultrasound showed excessive fluid in the intestines and exploratory surgery was recommended to look for a possible foreign body.

Dr. Matthew performed the exploratory laparotomy. As he was intubating Honey, stringy material was seen wrapped around the base of her tongue. This foreign material went all the way down through her stomach and into the intestines (this is called a linear foreign body). A gastrotomy (opening the stomach) and enterotomy (opening the intestines) was performed to remove the string from different parts of her gastrointestinal tract.

We then placed an oesophageal feeding tube to allow us to keep up Honeys nutrition but bypass her painful tongue during her recovery.

Honey recovered very well in hospital and loved the cuddles with our vet nurse Katie during her stay.

We are happy to report she went home and is fully recovered now. She is now back to her normal self and having good cuddles with her sister Sully.

When Dr Farlie met Stella for a check-up she realised she had pictures of a Stella look-alike on her socks!

Stella apparently knows when she is being photographed and was very obliging in posing for a sock/poodle pic.

Dr Farlie is one of 3 new vets on our team and it has been great having her!

Cheech the Shar Pei X was a little nervous coming into our Somerville Clinic. He found it a lot less stressful pretending he was a human sitting on our waiting room chair. He also spent his entire consultation and examination in the comfort of a chair in the consult room. We couldn’t resist a photo of him while he was looking so cute.

Dexter the English Pointer wants to get you excited about the olympics starting tomorrow!

Being a ‘sporting breed’ himself he has some opinions on the matter… Although his ancestors may have been bred to be gun dogs Dexter loves swimming and anything water related so he is most looking forward to watching the water polo!

🤽🏿‍♀️ 🤽‍♂️

What are you and your pets most looking forward too?

Ps. Dexter takes no responsibility for the fact that the Olympic ring logo is upside down as he was sitting and watching the liver treat being such a good boy…. You can blame his assistant for that!

We were very impressed with his title. With his stunning looks and personality we could see why he holds that title.
Good luck with your future shows Archer!

Meet Buddy the 77kg gentle giant!

Buddy the Mastif X has been visiting the clinics quite frequently due to an amputated toe that needed multiple examinations and bandage changes. Buddy certainly didn’t mind as he loves all the staff so much. When he arrives he pulls his owner through the doors on the end of his leash to welcome everyone with his wiggling bottom and sloppy kisses.
He couldn’t get enough attention from Dr. Ashley and Dr. Kirri who absolutely adore him as well.
We are happy to report Buddy has healed wonderfully and is doing really well without his toe that was causing him so much grief. We certainly miss seeing this happy boy for his rechecks.

Lulu and Coco were able to keep each other company when they were both in for their dental treatment with Dr. Danvy at the start of July!

Both dogs recovered well from the dental procedures and their gums have healed from the sites where teeth were extracted.

It was a pleasure to have these sweet dogs in.

We wanted to share the lovely words of our client about her dog Zoe and her recent experience of having a dental performed at Westernport vets. We think many of our clients may be able to relate to feelings of anxiety about a general anaesthetic in a senior pet that Zoe’s owner felt and therefore may find this helpful to read 💕

“Hi all,
we just wanted to send a massive thank you to Jac and all the team at Westernport Veterinary Clinic for looking after our beautiful old girl, Zoe, over the last year. Zoe is 15 and has had liver and kidney issues, as well as arthritis. All the team have been so knowledgeable and helpful to ensure she gets the best care possible. Once her kidney and liver issues were under control, it was decided that next on the agenda was her teeth!

As an older dog, Zoe had severe dental disease and needed many teeth removed. We were quite hesitant to have her go under anaesthetic given her age and other health issues, but after discussions with the vets they assured us that this was the best choice for Zoe and would increase her quality of life for her twilight years. We discussed the risks associated with the anaesthetic, and were presented with multiple options to best suit Zoe’s (and our) needs and concerns. She underwent the procedure a week ago and we couldn’t be happier! We noticed changes in her demeanour within days of the teeth being removed, she is much happier and eating her food with vigour! And while her breath doesn’t smell like flowers, it is no longer causing us to wince 😂

We felt very comfortable knowing Zoe was receiving the best care possible, and all of our nerves about the anaesthetic and procedure were alleviated by the amazing team who reassured us that this was the best choice for Zoe. We would really encourage anyone who is hesitating to have their senior pet undergo a procedure to book an appointment to discuss all the options, as we feel much better seeing how happy Zoe is now!

Thank you again to all the team, from Zoe and family ❤️”

It makes us so happy to hear when our patients are happier after their procedure! Sending big hugs to Zoe!

Coco the cavoodle visited our Hastings Clinic for her spey. Coco brought in her favourite teddy which had unfortunately suffered from being chewed apart and missing its stuffing.
Luckily, our vet nurse Matilda did an emergency stitch up on Coco’s teddy, so when she awoke from surgery she had a fixed teddy to help her recover.
Coco was very greatful for our nurse Matilda saving her teddy’s life as well as appreciated the matching bandages.

Chino the Cane Corso came to our Hastings clinic for an ear flush under anaesthetic.

Dr. Quincy had just finished doing the admit with Chino’s owners. His owners had left the room and Chino decided to make himself comfortable while Dr. Quincy turned around to finish the paperwork. When Dr. Quincy finished the paperwork he turned back around and caught Chino slowly climbing up onto the chair and then strategically spinning himself around on such a tight space then readjusted to make himself comfortable.

Dr. Quincy thought this was hilarious and had to snap a picture to show everyone how clever Chino was.

Bob the handsome cat visited our Somerville clinic for a large swelling on the side of his chest. After Dr. Alison examined him and performed a fine needle aspirate discovered this was a large abscess.
He was sent down to our Hastings clinic for Dr. Ashley to give him a general anaesthetic perform surgery where she lanced and drained his abscess. A penrose drain was placed to help with more drainage after surgery. This was removed after 5 days. He has just had the rest of his sutures removed 10 days after surgery. He has healed up wonderfully and doing really well.

He also really appreciated our vet nurse Ellie and loved how she made him so comfortable cattery during his stay in hospital.

🎉🎈It’s our birthday!
WVC is 48 years old today.

WVC is proud to have a long history as an independent, family focused, local business offering the very best in care for the pets of Westernport community.

WVC has come a long way since Dr Andrew Browne first opened the doors of the Hastings Vet Clinic in 1976. Back then our vet clinic was one of only two vet clinics on the Mornington Peninsula. WVC has evolved over the years from a sole charge clinic to a 16 vet practice with branches in Hastings, Somerville and Balnarring, offering a high level of medicine and surgery. Even though we have grown, we still pride ourselves in our personal service and care for your pets.

📸 We would love you to share your memories of WVC over the years, or any photos you may have. Here’s to continuing to foster and protect the incredibly special human animal bonds in our community.

June case of the month.

Tilly is an 8yr old Domestic Short Haired cat who was out for a walk on her harness when she suffered a scratch to the eye. Initially the eye seemed fine, then slowly over 3 - 4 weeks her eye became painful. The vets at Hastings tried various treatments to control the infection in her eye, but unfortunately it became so painful it was decided to remove her eye. Tilly's mum reports she has handled the loss of her eye very well, and has even become a lap cat because of all her treatments, much to Mum's delight.

Once the eye was removed we had a closer look at the lens and could see the damage and infection within it. It was absolutely the right decision to remove her eye, it was never going to heal and would have caused ongoing pain if left untreated.

Cat fights and scratches are a very common occurrence and an injury we treat often. Damage to the eye is common and superficial lacerations are easily treated. Unfortunately if the lens is involved we need to remove eye because of pain and uncontrollable infection. If your cat gets into a tiff and needs some attention, call the clinic on 5979 1214

📖 Chacha the Story Dog 📖

Chacha is a Story Dog that visits a local Hastings school and listens to children from grade 2 and grade 3 read. She loves a good story, but also a good tummy rub too. WVC have been sponsoring Chacha to do her wonderful job for the last 2 years.

Unfortunately Chacha has been out of action for the last few weeks due to an ear infection. The good news for the St Mary's Primary students is she has managed to shake off the ear infection (with the help of some treatment) and will be back at the school at the start of term 3!

Enjoy your holidays kids, because Chacha is looking forward to seeing you soon.

Meet Bones.

Meet Bones. He is a special boy as he is a completely deaf border collie who was adopted through hear no evil Australia dog rescue. This means that his owner has had to put in an enormous amount of time and effort to teach and train him using hand signals.

When Dr. Ashley first met the owner of Bones, she was picking up some of his medications. Dr. Ashley had noticed that he was coming due for his vaccinations. His owner was quite concerned and mentioned that he was extremely fearful of coming into the vet clinic. To the point his owner was reluctant to book him in for his annual vaccinations in the fear he would react and need sedating. Dr. Ashley suggested that it may be fear anxiety he was showing and encouraged his owner to start desensitising him to our clinic to make it a happy place. Bones started having regular visits to our Balnarring clinic to see his new favourite nurse Sally for some very special treats. His owner also desensitised him to having his neck touched where a vaccination would be given and also desensitised him to wear a muzzle (as previous visits he was fearful and tried to bite). The muzzle became such an exciting thing for him because he knew this meant special cheese.
After a few months of desensitisation and dedication with his owner, Bones was no longer afraid of the clinic, nurse Sally or Dr. Ashley.

On vaccination day Bones waltz through the door of Balnarring to sit on the scale as he had been doing over the last few months. He could not wait to receive his special treats from nurse Sally. His owner got him to sit and he could not wait to place his nose through the muzzle while he licked a spoon full of cream cheese. Dr. Ashley examined him and was able to pat his neck where he had been desensitised. Dr. Ashley injected his vaccination in the spot he had been trained and we immediately removed his muzzle. Bones had no clue he had his vaccination as his mouth was full of cream cheese and he actually wanted to wear the muzzle again so he could have more. Dr. Ashley, nurse Sally and his owner were all crying with happy tears that we accomplished something that a few months before would not have been achievable.

Bones now loves to pop into the clinic to receive a treat from nurse Sally. Although, a few weeks ago he was very sad when he was on a walk and the clinic was closed. He so badly wanted to get inside for his special treats.

This week he came back for a visit and a photo shoot with Dr. Ashley and nurse Sally. Bones is going to continue to practice his desensitising and occasional pop in for some treats and he will also continue his desensitising at home he will remembers how fun the vet can actually be and continue to enjoy his future vet visits.
