Morning all!

If you’ve been having trouble getting in contact with me, I promise I’m not intentionally ignoring you!

We’ve had a bit of a change in personal circumstances and as such, the amazing team at Big Paws, Little Paws have graciously offered for me to come on board with them.

You are more than welcome to book appointments with me through them, and while they may be a little further away than you’re used to, they have fantastic daycare facilities under the eyes of an amazing team and dog trainer Divina Reyes.

Please feel free to call and book with me there on 0423 822 577

🛁🐾🐩 GROOMER GUIDANCE 🐩🐾🛁

Double Trouble!!

It takes a LOT of work to look this floofy and fabulous. Many groomers don’t see double coated dogs until they are very compacted and are presented with the gargantuan task of uncovering the dog underneath. The pattern of bringing dogs in at this state instead of a regular schedule leads many groomers to refuse work on large double coated breeds. The feedback that most groomers hear after a double coated dogs groom is that it’s too expensive or takes too long, which leaves the process a sour tasting experience for everyone.

Groomers work HARD on these types of coats and often make a dollar per hour loss on them which many owners are unaware of. For example, the process on the beautiful Malamute featured in this post is as follows:

🔹Clip nails
🔹Clean Ears
🔹Apply 3 appropriately diluted bottle of shampoo and scrub the dog down completely to take out dead skin and grit that create friction when brushing
🔹Blast with a high velocity dryer with product still in to loosen dead hair and lift it off skin
🔹Rinse off entire dog
🔹Apply 3 bottles of pre mixed hair repair oil and mask product to protect hair and skin
🔹Brush with slicker in 1cm line increments from toes to the top of back
🔹Repeat with specialised rake
🔹Apply 3 more appropriately diluted bottles of shampoo over the remainder of the mask in the brushed out coat and soap up
🔹Rinse fully
🔹Apply 3 bottles of diluted conditioner and blow out with high velocity dryer to push out the remaining loose hair
🔹Rinse out fully
🔹Towel dry
🔹Spray coat with detangler/leave in conditioner
🔹Dry fully with high velocity dryer
🔹Comb out coat fully in 1cm lines from toes to top with detangling spray
🔹Tidy foot pads and feathering as needed

It’s a BIG process and for a dog out of a regular schedule can take up to 8 hours.

Things that will affect the price and time of your double coated dogs service

🚫 Knotty neuter:
If your double coated dog is neutered (desexed) the hormonal changes often cause the dogs undercoat (the fluffy part) to grow faster than it’s top coat (the silky part). This means you may need to schedule grooming appointments closer to every four weeks to help maintain their coat
💊 Dose of damage:
Some medications can change and damage the texture and tensile strength of your dogs hair
♾️ Fine frequency:
As with every dog, double coated breeds need to be brushed DAILY. Daily brushing helps stimulate the skin to evenly produce enough sebum to moisturise the hair throughout the coat. This doesn’t mean brushing the whole dog every day, but at least brushing a section a day to brush the whole dog over a week
🦴 Dry as a bone:
Dry coat breaks, and broken ends matt very easily. ALWAYS use a brushing spray or make your own diluting a 50c size piece of leave in conditioner in 250ml of distilled water. Even if you don’t have time to brush the dog, spray the most at risk friction areas (bum, undercarriage and neck) every second day with the mixture.
🌓 Inside/outside hopscotch:
These days dogs spend a lot of their time in temperature controlled environments. Sun and wind from outdoors or drying fans from air conditioning and heating can wick moisture off a dogs coat and dry it out causing breakage. This can be undone by adding more moisture back to the coat with a brushing spray.
🕒 Time heals all damage:
Shaving can damage a double coat (that will be covered in another lesson) however, all damage takes time to repair. Consistent schedules will help the coat get back in cycle to repair the damage but it can take 6 months to a year for the untrained eye to see the difference.

Luxurious coats are amazing but it takes a team of groomer and owner to make them work. Basically- we’d love to see you more often than not!

Start thinking more about adding different food to your dogs bowl!

We often marvel at the idea that our dogs LOVE certain “human” foods we wouldn’t usually give them, such as Vegemite, carrots or blueberries 🫐

It can often be because these foods have an essential vitamin or mineral that our dogs are missing in their usual diet. Sometimes dogs, and other animals, will eat foods that are normally poisonous to them and they would otherwise avoid, in order to get these essential nutrients. This odd eating pattern to “fix” their own problems is known as zoopharmacognasy.

The gut biome plays a HUGE role in both our, and our dogs, mental health and behaviour - sugar and caffeine rushes or “hangry” arguments with partners anyone???
It’s super important to introduce non conventional foods to dogs early to help form a healthy and resilient gut biome as well as providing your dogs with nutrients that aren’t in regular prepackaged foods.

What non conventional food are you going to share with your dog tonight??

Continuing on the gut biome journey 🥰

Bananas 🍌♥️🐾

“6 Reasons Bananas Are Good For Dogs

Every dog owner wants to give their dog a chance at a long and healthy life. Letting your dog eat bananas is one easy way to help reach that goal.

Bananas offer your dog some of the same health benefits they do for humans. Here are 6 big ones you should know about …

1. Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure

Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamin B6. These two nutrients can help regulate your dog’s blood flow. Low blood pressure equates to healthier heart function.

2. Strengthen Muscles

Bananas are also full of magnesium, which plays a major role in muscle maintenance. For active pooches, eating bananas can help make sure they maintain strong muscles.

3. Increase Bone Strength

Potassium in bananas can reduce calcium loss from bones. And the magnesium in them can promote healthy bone growth.

4. Improve Brain Function

Along with enhancing heart health, vitamin B6 can promote cognitive capacity. That means bananas will help keep your dog’s mind sharp.

5. Supercharge Immunity

If your dog eats bananas, it can help boost her resistance to sickness. Bananas contain vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps dogs heal and repair.

6. Improve Digestive Health

A medium-sized banana has 2.6 grams of dietary fiber, which can help regulate the digestive tract. Bananas are also a prebiotic that feed probiotics (the good bacteria in the gut).”

Good morning all

Unfortunately due to an accident involving a plate glass window I will have to postpone all grooming appointments indefinitely. I am currently at the Northern awaiting surgery on both my hands. The extent of damage to tendons and time frame of my return to grooming is not yet known.

I do suggest that in the mean time you seek out other grooming assistance.

Sorry for the inconvenience 😔
