Urban Feline Australia

Urban Feline Australia We are a cat rehoming service dedicated to helping your existing pet find a new forever home We do not take on street cats, pregnant mums or kittens.

Urban Feline Australia is a newly established cat rehoming service dedicated to keeping your existing pets out of kill shelters and helping them find loving forever homes. We specialize in helping "surrenders" which are cats that have lived with humans previously but for one reason or another their owners are unfortunately no longer able to look after them. At this stage we unfortunately do not ha

ve the necessary resources to look after these animals and can only handle friendly cats that have lived with people previously. If you need help with a stray cat, a pregnant mum or young kittens please contact our sister rescue Hannah's Haven. We take your pets into our amazing cat sanctuary, aka Cat Paradise, where they're treated with love and affection until the right forever home is found for them. Only pets that have been desexed, microchipped, recently vaccinated and flea and worm treated can be accepted, for their own protection. Urban Feline Australia is not a large company with a shop front and multiple staff, it a is a very small, one man operation that I run from the safety of my own home in my spare time. We rely heavily on cooperation from friends, other rescues, our amazing foster carers and the kindness of strangers to survive and all donations received and every cent from adoptions fees goes straight back into the rescue and is used to provide food, litter, toys and pay vet bills. As a very small operation we do ask that owners surrendering cats be willing to make a donation to go towards the ongoing care of their beloved furry feline friend. There is no obligation to do this however, we exist purely to help cats, it is just very helpful and every cent certainly helps. If you would like to find out a little bit more about what we do please check out our other social media or send us a message. We can also be found on Instagram and Youtube under the name Urban Feline Australia and all the cats we currently have available for adoption can be found on our Pet Rescue profile here:

https://www.petrescue.com.au/groups/11970

As a newly established cat rescue service we are always on the lookout for foster carers to lend a hand so if you think you might be able to assist please let us know. Donations are also always welcome. If you have any cat food, litter, medications or toys ect that you're not using and would be happy to donate please give us a shout and we'll be sure to put them to good use. If you'd like to make a cash donation please do so via our banking details below. Urban Feline Australia

It's been far too long since we've done one of these and we could all do with some good news so here we go:

We're happy to announce that all of these beautiful souls have found their new forever homes recently πŸ₯³

Congratulations to all these gorgeous kitty cats and to the amazing people who put their hands up to give them a second chance at a great life.

Some of these kitties were surrendered to be rehomed as their previous owners could no longer look after them, some we're found living wild and were taken in, while others we were able to help save from being put to sleep. Either way they're all gorgeous and all deserving of the best life can offer.

Congratulations to:

Hizzy
Henry
Crawford
Twiglet
Tilly
Stormy
Nuzz
Piggy
Dillon
Hissy
Pearl
Amy &
Oliver

And a special thanks to all the people who have been involved in their stories, in particular their amazing foster carers who were kind enough to take these beautiful souls into their homes and shower them with love until their new forever families could be found.

We could not do this without the help and support of you amazing people πŸ™

❀️GREAT NEWS❀️ We have received a messsge to say that someone has adopted these two gorgeous kitties. Happy days πŸ₯³πŸ˜Š

Hey friends,

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Sadly we received an email recently to say that these beautiful souls had been abandoned at a commercial cattery in Port Melbourne. Their owners never collected them and the cattery now has legal possession of the pair and is looking to find them a new forever home.

Harley ( male ) and Quin ( female ) are 10 year old siblings who are apparently very sweet, very affectionate and love people.

They are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped and have no health or behavioral issues as far as we're aware.

We do not currently the have space available to take them on but if we were able to find someone who was happy to foster these two sweethearts we would be more than happy to advertise them for adoption and rehome them through our cat rescue service.

If you think you might be in a position to bring Harley and Quin into your home and treat them with love until a new forever home can be found, please feel free to reach out and we'll be more than happy to have a chat about how the fostering process works.

Thanks friendsπŸ™

These 'outings' of shelters continue. Before the rescue sector existed shelters did what they liked and killed whomever they wanted to. The Lost Dogs Home had all the negative publicity initially but only because it was the worst. Leave any organisation with no accountability and power over lives....Why are these shelters so keen to push non-disclosure agreements -particularly when it seems that often the employee is not given a copy of what they have signed. This article was obviously researched well and found enough people to give a background even if they choose to remain anonymous. And why not, they are often frightened of what happens to whistleblowers in Victoria. Collaboration and trust can only exist when it is two-sided. And the rescue sector has a long history of individuals who are too frightened to go to reporters, having so many disgusting stories told to them of so many incidents within the shelter industry. Is it about the animals for these shelters? Or is it a business.

How annoying it must be for shelters that the rescue sector has survived and grown and shown how it should be done.

While I read this post from Jennah - I wondered where it leaves Mr. Menze, his wife, and the other woman mentioned.

IF they resigned - would it be seen as an admission of guilt? Yes.

Will the Board stand by the CEO in this time of upheaval? I think yes. Although they do have a right to a 'please explain' from these three management.

Will these people listen, change their protocols now they have been publicly questioned in regards to their practices?

All of us - outside looking in can see that the best thing would be for the three to go. To find new management over time - and agree to a solid care of the animals based on the experience and care the staff clearly wish to provide. They, of all people know the animals.....and what is required.

It has become untenable for those questioned to stay. But they will. Grit their teeth, and bluster through.

The cats need better. The staff need better. The volunteers need better. The supporters need better.

It will not happen with the same management. They are in this position BECAUSE of them.

Thank you Jennah for your thoughtful post. Here it is below.
I can only hope the Board will understand once there is a vote of no confidence in management - there is no going back.

Please read Jennah's post below.

Animal Aid Understand nothing is about sullying the name of Animal Aid. It is about management.
As a volunteer recently removed for attempting to stand up for myself in the face of unnecessary comments made by the interim manager regarding my care of a cat, and as a volunteer who gave my all to the organization I have loved and respected, I hope you can understand that "together" is not a feeling that is abundant in the cattery at the moment. Instead, under the interim managers made up of the CEO's wife and the business support partner, it has felt like being pushed aside, with staff and volunteers demoted to cleaning and feeding while the planned "clean out" has occurred (management's words). That meant, as you know and cannot deny, an audit of every cat in the cattery by these 2 managers accompanied by the head welfare vet, and any that showed signs of timidity were listed for euthanasia. The number would have reached over 50 in 3 weeks had not rescues stepped in - not asked for by the management. You know where and how to check the figures so cannot deny this. The euthanasias included cats already passed for adoption. I can vouch for this. I attempted to adopt a cat, Tika, from the adoption area. I called and called reception but no one answered. I texted a colleague to ask if Tika was still in adoptions. She replied she thought she had seen the business support partner taking a cat to the vet clinic, and that Tika was no longer there. It turned out Tika had been taken for euthanasia, the deed done by the business support partner and head welfare vet. Both knew the cat had a person interested in adopting her, yet they went ahead. And yet I was admonished for being angry, taken to HR and told I was too emotional. Yes, the cat was socialised enough that we could stroke it. We had videos to prove it. You refused to see them. Again, you cannot deny this. You know it to be true. I had a right to be angry.
So I suggest that instead of complaining about people going to the media or citing malicious intent, that you understand you have a whole bunch of sad, confused, hurt and distressed employees and volunteers, some quite stunned and traumatised by your clean out. Try to understand there is no "together" in this, but instead the very real fear of being easily disposed of should anyone speak up. That you are disappointed is nothing compared to what your employees and volunteers are experiencing. You have the choice of working with tremendous talent, experience, skills and knowledge to move cats successfully through to adoptions. You have chosen not to do this but trust in 2 interim managers whose qualifications and knowledge about animal welfare or management is just not comparable. You have chosen to clean out rather than give the first rate second chance you claim is your mission. As one manager said to me, "We are a business, not a rescue". That said it all to me. You need to consider how you treat people. Having the wife of the CEO as a manager is a complete conflict of interest for reasons I am sure you understand. Her back is covered, as are the backs of your managers. What about the rest of us? What about the animals? I do not hate the organisation or want to see it destroyed. But someone has to take responsibility for what has been created in the working environment. Staff and volunteers are not there to carry the weight of the organisations debt (available through the annual reports) by accepting multiple unnecessary deaths just to make room for a new contract that will increased numbers of cats entering the system. There has to be, and is, another way. It's called utilising your talent pool. It's called good manners, kind words, and respect for those who work tirelessly for free as well as those paid.

Animal Aid Coldstream has been exposed. Please take a moment to read this and share it everywhere.

FROM THE HERALD SUN
Fergus Ellis and Gemma Scerri
July 5, 2025 - 8:11PM

An injured kitten left for dead, cats being euthanised for being β€œtimid” and concerns of overcrowding are among a litany of explosive allegations made against one of Victoria’s largest animal refuges.

Not-for-profit charity Animal Aid has β€œdisgusted” animal welfare volunteers for allegedly failing to comply with strict codes of practice outlined for shelters and pounds as it is believed cost cutting is biting.

And there are fears the problem could worsen as the charity’s Coldstream site prepares to take on a sixth council contract next month.

In a report sent to the board of Animal Aid earlier this week – and leaked to the Herald Sun – serious claims have been levelled against interim management.

One shocking claim included in the report alleges an Animal Aid staff member moved a kitten at their cattery in Coldstream without noticing it had suffered a serious head injury.

The following day, a staff member allegedly found the struggling kitten and called management for urgent veterinary assistance, however, the kitten died before it ever saw a vet.

Other claims in the report include cats being euthanised despite some animals being desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

The report alleges cats were being euthanised for β€œbehavioural” reasons, despite video evidence and push back from staff suggesting they could be rehabilitated.

The report also alleges current practices go against Animal Aid’s own mission statement, which ensures animals are given a second chance, with euthanasia being a last resort.

More than half a dozen sources close to the organisation, speaking on the provision of anonymity, said growing frustration with the treatment of both animals and staff at the cattery had prompted the leak of the damning report.

For over 70 years, Animal Aid has provided refuge, rehabilitation and veterinary care for cats and dogs, having rehomed 1,481 cats this year.

Financial statements filed with the Australian Charities and Non-for-profits Commission show the organisation was running at a $322,774 net deficit as of January this year.

Sources claim the financial strain on Animal Aid has weighed heavily on management, who has allegedly looked to reduce costs at the expense of overall animal care.

Animal Aid’s pound facility in Coldstream is already contracted with five councils, including Yarra Ranges Shire Council, Maroondah City Council, Shire of Murrundindi, Knox City Council and City of Whitehorse.

One source said there were fears overcrowding at the cattery would get worse as the organisation is set to take on the City of Monash contract in August.

β€œThe answer isn’t just to take on more cats,” they said.

They added the emotional and physical toll of the job was already hard enough, let alone the pressure to stay quiet, with staff now β€œtoo frightened” to speak out about their concerns.

β€œWorking in an animal shelter is one of the hardest jobs in the world … you see what people do to cats, and people do worse things to cats than dogs,” they said.

β€œI think people assume you just play with kittens all day … the things you’d see, you would never sleep.”

Photos obtained by the Herald Sun show cats living in cramped cages and pens without adequate food and water, with bowls seen overturned or empty.

Sickening images also show cats in bedding soaked with faeces and urine.

The report alleged that on some occasions cats were only fed one tablespoon of wet food per day.

In a statement to the Herald Sun, an Animal Aid spokeswoman said the allegations were untrue.

β€œOur CEO and Board are aware of the allegations and we always take genuine concerns seriously,” she said.

Their statement denied all allegations related to unnecessary euthanasia, underfeeding and cost cutting.

She also said the cats had access to β€œappropriate bedding”, adding animals under their care were monitored daily.

The Animal Aid board and senior leadership have thrown their full support behind management.

Animal Aid volunteer foster carers speak out

Volunteer foster carers, who take on cats in need of rehabilitation from Animal Aid, have also sounded the alarm over new procedures enforced in recent weeks.

Former Animal Aid foster carer Rebecca Davies, 72, said she was β€œdisgusted” by the recent changes she was forced to abide by.

Ms Davies had volunteered with Animal Aid since 2019, having only recently walked away after she was allegedly told to return two cats, Miguel and Sarah, that she had been caring for.

Only a few weeks ago, Ms Davies claims she was told to return the cats to Animal Aid, citing occupational health and safety concerns.

She was also told people interested in fostering the cats couldn’t go to her house for an interested party β€˜meet and greet’, something that had previously been standard practice.

Fearing the cats would be euthanised if she returned them, Ms Davies said it was in the best interests of Miguel and Sarah to adopt them and keep facilitating their rehabilitation.

β€œI resisted the temptation to use expletives, and I refused to return them,” she said.

β€œI did the best thing for the cats and adopted them, then walked away.

β€œI’m disgusted, absolutely disgusted, I won’t have anything to do with them anymore.”

Another foster carer, who wished to remain anonymous, claims they were told volatile kittens would have two-weeks to be rehabilitated otherwise it would be considered β€œfailed” and returned to the cattery.

They claimed management were more focused on creating a β€œpristine petting zoo” rather than focusing on rehabilitating cats.

They said the toll of trying to rehabilitate a cat in the space of two weeks was too stressful, as making a cat comfortable around people takes months at a time depending on the cat.

β€œThere’s an emotional toll in foster caring – even when they are healthy you hope they find a good home, you invest,” they said.

Having stepped away from volunteering at the cattery, the foster carer alleged staff were sacred, having their jobs threatened if they complained about the management of the cats.

β€œIt’s hard to see these good hearted people suffering in this way,” they said.

Councils set to probe Animal Aid

A Knox City Council spokesman confirmed Animal Aid was contracted to provide pound services for the council.

In light of the report, the spokesman said: β€œcouncil was not aware of the allegations against Animal Aid.”

β€œWe have requested a response from Animal Aid to understand the situation in greater detail.”

Shire of Murrindindi said they had not received any formal advice or β€œsubstantiated complaints” regarding allegations made against Animal Aid.

A spokesperson said: β€œCouncil will make contact with Animal Aid to seek clarification and confirm that the services provided under our agreement continue to meet expected standards.”

A Yarra Ranges Shire Council spokeswoman said Animal Aid’s model was to rehome all adoptable animals, but declined to comment on the report currently before the board.

Whitehorse City Council confirmed they supported Animal Aid and would continue to work with them, adding they would follow up the allegations.

The City of Monash was contacted for comment.

An injured kitten left for dead, cats being euthanised for being β€œtimid” and concerns of overcrowding are among a litany of explosive allegations made against one of Victoria’s largest animal refuges.

This gorgeous kitty cat is Timmy and he's one of the beautiful souls we were able to save from crossing the rainbow bridge recently.

Timmy came into our care about 6 weeks ago and when he first arrived he was very timid, very shut down and had not had a lot of interaction with people.

Over the past 6 weeks his amazing foster mum has done an amazing job building his trust, showering him with love and teaching him how to play.

This is his first time playing since arriving in his foster home. πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯²

He's also slowly getting used to human touch and is accepting pats from time to time.

We're very proud of him 😊

Timmy has come a long way and we'd love to find him a home with an experienced cat owner who is willing to give him the time and love he needs to come out of his shell. Building Timmy's trust is going to be a slow process but we a sure there is a sweet and affectionate cat waiting to blossom in the right environment.

Timmy also loves being around other cats so if you have an existing cat, slightly older than him, that would be ideal. Having a big brother or sister who could take Timmy under their wing and show him the ropes would help his confidence immensely.

Timmy is approximately 18 months old and has been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and is available for adoption right meow.

If you think you have the room in your heart and your home to provide this gorgeous little fella with a great life please let us know and we’ll be more than happy to arrange a time for you to meet and fall in love with him.

This gorgeous kitty cat is Slinky and he's on the lookout for his new forever home.

Slinky is a very sweet and loving little gentleman with a quirky personality and adorable facial expressions that will keep you amused for hours.

He is a gentle soul and can be a little shy at first but once he gets to know you he will be all about the purrs and the cuddles.

Slinky has spent most of his life as an indoor outdoor cat but since coming into our care has been purely indoor and has been enjoying the luxury or cozy couches, warm heaters, yummy food and lots of cuddles.

That said; you can tell that he would love to be outdoors running around so we would love to find him a home on a farm or with someone who has a big backyard that where he can burn off some of his boisterous energy.

He's a very athletic cat who enjoys bouncing around like a gymnast and you can always tell when he needs to go to the bathroom as he gets zoomies just before and just after he poops.

He's generally quite an aloof cat that likes to do his own thing but will often check in with you, come say hello, give you a bit of a cuddle and then continue on his merry way. But when he's in the mood for attention he is not shy to let you know - often jumping up on the desk and looking adorable while you're working.

Slinky enjoys being brushed and will even let you brush his belly. He will roll from side to side and look adorable while he's being groomed. He also likes to play fight while you're doing this sometimes but responds quickly when told no.

There's not a lot that bothers Slinky. He's a pretty relaxed little guy who is used to being around other animals and is happy to have attention from kids. He has a very gentle and non-dominant personality and does not have a mean bone in his beautiful little body.

Slinky also gets on well with other pets and would slot seamlessly into almost any household.

If you can provide and indoor / outdoor environment and you're looking for a low maintenance companion with an amusing personality and a lot of love to give then this is the cat for you. .

Slinky is approximately 3 years old and has been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated and is available for adoption right meow.

If you think you have the room in your heart and your home to provide this gorgeous little fella with a great life please let us know and we’ll be more than happy to arrange a time for you to meet and fall in love with him.

This gorgeous kitty cat is named Mama and she's on the lookout for her new forever home.

Mama was well loved by her previous people and had lived with a lovely young woman pretty much her entire life. But when they moved in with family and combined forces with all the other pets running around Mama did not handle the change and was clearly unhappy so they made the tough decision to reach out to us and find her a new home.

She comes from a loving household and has a lot of love to give.

Mama is a sweet, gentle, affectionate and loving little lady who absolutely adores human company.

She enjoys a pat and a scratch, likes to be picked up and smooched and just generally enjoys being around people.

Mama is a serious lap cat and is happiest when she can curl up on your lap while you watch TV or snuggle in bed for warmth and comfort.

She would be the perfect companion for a retiree or home body who likes to kick back, relaxed and be cuddled all day.

Despite her small build, she has a big appetite and absolutely loves her food and although she may be 10 years old, she still has a playful sideβ€”especially when it comes to her favorite toys or a bit of catnip.

Mama is very people motivated and would very much prefer to be the only cat in the household so a home without any other pets is a must.

If you're looking for a sweet, affectionate and very loving little companion then Mama may just be the cat for you.

Mama is approximately 10 years old and has been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and is available for adoption right meow.

If you think you have the room in your heart and your home to provide this gorgeous little lady with a great life please let us know and we’ll be more than happy to arrange a time for you to meet and fall in love with her.

Looking for an adorable kitten ?

Stormy Von Bunny Bum, as he's affectionately known, is a sweet and gentle soul who does not have a mean bone in his beautiful little body.

He can be a bit shy at first and was very unsure about people when he first arrived in his foster home but his foster mum has done an amazing job with him and his confidence has been growing steadily every day.

As a young fella Stormy loves to play and is a big fan of wand toys, so this is a great way to bond and gain his trust. He is also very food motivated and is happy to lick yummy treats of his foster mums fingers.

Stormy Von Bunny Bum is also very social and loooooooves other cats so we would love to find him a home that already has an existing cat, slightly older, who could take Stormy under their wing and show him the ropes. With his gentle and non-dominant demeanor he would make the perfect little brother.

As he is still learning to trust people, a noisy household with young kids would not be a good fit. A quiet home with an experienced and patient cat person who can give Stormy the time he needs to come out of his shell would be ideal.

We have no doubt that with time and love you'll find yourself with a sweet and affectionate, cuddly little gentleman on your hands.

Stormy is approximately 4 months old and has been desexed, microchipped and vaccinated and is available for adoption right meow.

If you think you have the room in your heart and your home to provide this gorgeous little fella with a great life please let us know and we’ll be more than happy to arrange a time for you to meet and fall in love with him.
