As we head into hay-cutting season, donโ€™t forget to check bales for moisture before storing!

Moisture trapped in tightly packed bales can create heat during fermentation, and if that heat canโ€™t escape, it can lead to spontaneous combustion.

โœ… Only store properly cured, dry hay. Even small amounts of moisture can cause heating.

โœ… Check the temperature of stacked hay regularly. ๐—˜๐—”๐—ฆ๐—ฌ ๐—–๐—›๐—˜๐—–๐—ž โžก๏ธ push a crowbar deep into the hay stack for 2 hours, if it comes out too hot to hold, the hay is heating.

โœ… Make sure your hay shed has good airflow and avoid stacking all the way to the roof.

โœ… Store new hay separately from older hay, newer hay is more likely to heat.

โœ… Store hay well away from machinery, fuel, and any sources of heat.
