How often should you wash your dog?
The answer may be surprising...
As little as possible!
Our dogs' natural coat oil is crucial for optimal skin & coat health. When we wash our dogs too much, we strip these oils, which can actually lead to dry, itchy, and/or inflamed skin!
Every dog is going to be different, and it is very dependant on what your dogs are doing each day, but we recommend only washing when absolutely necessary!
We never advise weekly washing, or even fortnightly. Once a month is okay but the longer you can leave it, the better!

How gorgeous is Tilly?!
Tilly is a deaf ACD mix who suffers from generalised anxiety.
She has been using our Anxiety Away Spray for a number of months now & her amazing Mum says it has helped her immensely!

Our sweet Zuma is approximately 7 years of age. He has bilateral hip dysplasia, as well as arthritic change in a number of his joints.
Prior to coming into our lives, Zuma was unfortunately not cared for properly & these conditions were not managed well, if at all.
Nowadays, Zuma has a great life where all of his medical needs are looked after and managed well. But he still has some lingering aches & pains, particularly after exercise.
Thankfully for Zuma, our Muscle & Joint Rub saves the day every time he is feeling a little uncomfortable.
A gentle massage has him drifting off to sleep and moving better in no time!

You'll find fractionated coconut oil in our joint rub, anxiety spray & doggie cologne. We just love it!
Our top bathing tips:
✔️ Make it fun & create a positive association. Using treats, lickimats, verbal praise goes a long way in making sure your dog is comfortable!
✔️ Brush your dogs coat prior to bathing. Medium - long coated dogs, dogs with double coats & particularly dirty dogs will need a good brush to prevent their fur from matting during the bathing process.
✔️ Shampoo twice. This ensures your dogs coat & skin is fully cleansed of impurities & debris.
✔️ Allow conditioner to sit for 2 minutes. This puts much needed moisture back into the coat/skin and will help with the brushing process post bath for long coated dogs.
✔️ Rinse thoroughly to prevent build up through the coat that can contribute to hot spots.
✔️ Dry thoroughly to ensure dogs don't end up with hot spots.
✖️ Wash a matted coat. Debris and loose hair will further matt your dogs coat.
✖️ Fail to dry your dog properly. This leads to hotspots & discomfort.
✖️ Wet the inner ear. This leads to ear infections that can be extremely painful & persistent.
✖️ Don't over do it! Dog's shouldn't be washed weekly, fortnightly, and sometimes not even monthly. Washing them too frequently can strip their much needed natural oils, resulting in itchy, dry and uncomfortable skin.
Only bath them when you need to!

Next up on the list is Formaldehyde.
I bet you're all thinking 'surely there's not Formaldehyde in my dogs skincare products'
Unfortunately, you would be incorrect.
Formaldehyde is another chemical ingredient that is often used as a preservative. However, you won't see the word "formaldehyde" listed in the ingredients. It is usually hidden as a name listed above.
When Formaldehyde started getting a bad rap, it was 'reformulated' to be a slow releasing compound. But at the end of the day, Formaldehyde is Formaldehyde!
What affects does Formaldehyde have on your dogs?
✖️ Burning of the skin
✖️ Itching
✖️ Dryness
✖️ Increased sensitivity
✖️ Blistering
✖️ Discomfort

Next on the list is Parabens.
Parabens are chemical preservatives added to dog shampoo & conditioner to prevent the growth of bacteria.
These are not usually listen as 'parabens' on lables but as some of the names mentioned above.
Unfortunately for our dogs, Parabens can cause a huge range of issues when built up in their system, including but not limited to:
✖️ Neurological issues
✖️ Reproductive issues
✖️ Developmental issues
✖️ Disruption of hormones & the endocrine system
✖️ Dermatitis
✖️ Cancer
So what can you do to ensure that you are supporting brands who truly have your dogs best interests at heart?
✅️ Choose brands who are transparent about their ingredients & openly discuss what the use of chemicals can do to your dog.

✅️ Avoid supermarket & cheap products.

We know how hard it can be, reading product labels that might as well be written in a foreign language. How do you know what's natural, synthetic or SAFE for your dog?
We will be sharing a series of posts to help simplify this process & give you an understanding of the chemicals/nasties most commonly used in canine skincare products.
First up is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, also referred to as SLS.
