Things you don't expect when you get a chihuahua

1. They are fussy. "Leave them to starve and they will eventually eat" does NOT work. They will rather die than eat that (insert food name here). You will soon find yourself with a plate full of samplers trying to see what they will eat and when you have that eureka moment and discover what they like and go buy it in bulk, they will change their mind. LOL

2. They eat much more than you think. (of your food, off your plate. They are begging incessantly)

3. They bury things everywhere. Expect to find food and other things in your bed, under your pillow, between the cracks in the couch and in the laundry pile.

4. They are very intelligent. Not intelligent as in a rival to the border collie at obedience school. I mean intelligent as in they do all the tricks they learn at obedience school at home but act totally dumb and do nothing when you are at obedience school next to the border collie you are trying to impress. They just sit there and shiver (even if they are not scared) just to make you look like a useless dog trainer. When you get home they will do all their tricks perfectly as though they never had amnesia just 30 mins ago. ROTFL

5. They have the attitude of a Pitbull and even though they are small, you don't want to get in the way of an angry chihuahua. They can be very protective and pretty good watch dogs. They also think they can take on the pitbull in the park!

6. They are very tiny little dictators. Your life will be run by the chihuahua and if the chihuahua wants you to p*el the skin off her chicken before she will eat it, you will do so. You will also play when told to, walk her when told to, and do whatever else she deems necessary at any given moment. Don't argue. She will throw a tantrum.

7. They take up a lot more space than you expect. Its a small dog, you might think, but wait till you try sharing a bed with him/her. Expect to find yourself lying on the edge of the bed being spooned by a dog that has somehow morphed to the space requirements of a great dane. And no, moving them is not an option... remember that Pitbull attitude?

8. They have super hero bladders. A chihuahua that doesn't want to get up in the morning is not going to get up to p*e.... I am talking 16 hours of taking up your whole bed and NEVER needing to get up to go p*e.....

9. All the chihuahuas I know are not morning people. Don't wake them. Don't make them get up. Don't expect any kind of co-operation. They are like all night partiers the next morning before their coffee.... despite having 16 hours of sleep.

10. So strong is their desire to be with you that they will follow you everywhere. Expect to use the toilet with a dog sitting in front of you watching. Expect to shower while the dog stares through the glass. Expect the dog to bring their food to eat on your lap. And if you think you need some privacy, expect the dog to be scratching and whining at the door.

11. They will crawl into your heart and you will gladly accept all of the above and more as long as they are happy. Chihuahuas are special. You will fall in love. And then you will turn into the crazy dog person... the one with 600 photos of their dog on their phone. The one who rushes home to be with the dog or worse, refuses to go out because of the dog. The one who finger feeds the dog during a fussy spell or talks to the dog as though it were a human. The one who gets annoyed when someone says "Get real its just a dog". Because its not!!! Its family.
