Bumblefoot what is it?

Bumblefoot (also called pododermatitis) or hock foot is, sadly, one of the more common foot issues that veterinarians treat in guinea pigs.

Bumblefoot is an infection of a pets pads on the bottom of their feet and is often a result of inappropriate habitat conditions.

Commonly found in small pets housed on abrasive surfaces, especially wirefloored cages, soiled and wet bedding. Even mild cases of bumblefoot can be excruciatingly painful for your pets and should be treated by an exotic vet if you think they may have it.

Providing a soft dry bedding that is regularly clean will prevent this for happening.

Are you sure you have the right size cage for your piggies?

As much as they are rodents, guinea pigs need a lot more space than you think. You see, small high cages use vertical space for pets to climb. But guinea pigs prefer floor space to forage, graze and play. And as social as cavies are, they still need their own designated areas where they can sleep. So you question what’s a safe recommended size for your Guinea pigs!

Guinea Pig Cage Size Guidelines

The minimum size cage for one guinea pig, according to the RSPCA is 7.5 ft squared ( 27 inches x 41 inches), but the preferred size should be 10.5 ft squared (27 inches x 56 inches). Remember though, cavies are social animals and need companionship, so we recommend always having two or more in a cage.

With this in mind, these are the guidelines for choosing the correct guinea pig cage:

• Cage for 2 guinea pigs: 10.5 square feet or 27 inches by 56 inches

• Cage for 3 guinea pigs: 13 square feet or 27 inches by 71 inches

• Cage for 4 guinea pigs: 16 square feet or 27 inches by 84 inches

*Do keep in mind Guinea pig cages for 2 males (or more) should always be one size bigger!

The Best Guinea Pig Cage For Your Pet

We recommend a single level cage, because the most important thing to consider when deciding on housing for guinea pigs is that there needs to be plenty of floor space for them to run around and play. Single storey hutches are especially good for this. They also need plenty of ventilation with it comes to choosing their housing. Guinea pigs do not climb and have no benefits with double story hutches. We recommend the C&C cages for indoor spaces.

Fun Fact : Did you know Guinea pigs are very active, they can be awake for up to 20 hours a day - you don't need much beauty sleep when you're a guinea pig! This means that they need lots of space to move about in. This space can be outdoors or indoors however preferably indoors. And should have a sleeping space, as well as a large exercise run that your guinea pigs can explore, run around, and play in safely.
