🐴 I snapped this picture of one of our gelding’s eating his lucerne hay for breakfast this morning, as I thought equine saliva production would make for an interesting article topic. Look at all of that salivary goodness!

𝘿𝙞𝙙 𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬?

🦠 Horses produce gastric acid continuously, regardless of whether there is food sitting in their stomach to begin enzymatically digesting or not. An empty stomach means that gastric acid becomes increasingly likely to damage the stomach lining.

⚖️ Equine saliva and the sodium bicarbonate it contains are a vital aspect of digestion and the neutralisation of gastric acid. Without the neutralising effects of saliva, the pH of the horse’s stomach is likely to become increasingly acidic, which increases the likelihood of Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome.

🦷 Horses only produce saliva while they are physically masticating. They must be grinding, chewing, and swallowing in order to produce saliva and the digestive enzymes that are oh so important for their gastric health and feed digestion.

𝙎𝙤 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙈𝙚𝙖𝙣?

🐴 It’s simple math really. If the end goal is the production of adequate saliva and digestive enzymes to neutralise gastric acid and prevent ulceration and acidosis, the horse needs to be trickle-feeding almost continuously.

🌾 Longer-stemmed roughages such as pasture and hay will take a horse longer to chew and swallow than concentrates, finely chopped roughages, or grains will, which is all of the proof you should need that a forage-based diet is the most physiologically beneficial approach you can take for your horse.

⏰ Studies have proven that a horse left without food for as little as 4-5 hours is significantly more likely to develop gastric ulcers, not to mention the psychological and metabolic stress the horse goes through in fear of being starved.

🌱 Never underestimate the power of good quality, long-stemmed roughage!
