What to expect when your cat visits our practice
We understand that the thought of visiting the vet can be stressful. We've taken this onboard and have implemented some changes to make sure you and your cat have a comfortable experience.
BACKGROUND
Cats are amazing, independent, territorial creatures that need to be in control of their surroundings. They are particularly sensitive to change e.g. different routines, smells, noises, and places. Cats are also great at hiding illnesses, where the display of illness is often a sign of a serious problem. It is essential that your cat undergoes an annual examination to help make sure your cat is healthy so that it can live a long and happy life. But it is just as important that we make this experience as comfortable as possible.
CONSULTATION ROOM
We handle your cat gently and with respect at all times. We try to minimize stress during handling, examinations, and procedures. We also minimize the impacts of odours, bright lights, and noises that may cause fear and anxiety in cats.
We practice exceptional hygiene with hands, surfaces and equipment washed and disinfected between patients.
HOSPITALIZATION
We understand that a stay in the hospital can be stressful. For this reason, we have a dedicated cat hospital ward and use cage covers to minimize noise and visual contact of other animals. Comfortable soft bedding e.g. towels, blankets, ‘igloos’ are used to help reduce stress and allow your cat to hide. We encourage you to bring something from home as well.
BRINGING YOUR CAT TO THE VET
Cats should be seen by their vet at least on an annual basis and more frequently as they enter their senior years.
When transporting your cat to the practice, we recommend:
Always use a carrier (cardboard boxes are not ideal as cats can easily escape)
The ideal carrier should open from the top to allow easy lifting of the cat in and out, or have a removable top section
Place a familiar blanket, towel or toy in the carrier
Wipe your cats face with a dry cloth and transfer this scent onto the cage
Spray the carrier with Feliway® at least 15 minutes before putting the cat inside
Cover the carrier with a towel during the journey (this can also be sprayed with feliway 15 minutes prior to being put over the carrier)
Drive carefully to avoid sudden movements
Avoid swinging the carrier or banging it against objects
