*** Unpopular Opinion ***

We have all met people breeding animals for money. People who don't know about the lineage they are breeding. People who see $'s instead of breeding out physical defects, temperament issues, hereditary behavioural issues. People who are responsible for a world of pain.

They have no idea of the costs involved health screening their animals, they don't understand and/or care about the health and well being of the bitch. They don't understand the toll over breeding takes on their bitch. I could go on.Theres plenty more.

The bitch plays an instrumental role in how the puppies develop. She better be well adjusted but often she's not - but she makes good looking puppies.

In a time when the pounds are overflowing too many people breeding without the knowledge to do so with care is even more terrible than usual.

Breeders are responsible for improving their lines and for giving puppies the best start possible.

Poor and over breeding kills good dogs.

It's an unpopular opinion but we all need to call out the people in our lives contributing to the problems (even if they are close to us) because they are not animal lovers. Animal lovers don't cause a glut of unwanted animals.

Speak up. Even when it's hard to do so.

We need to put an end to Back Yard Breeders.
Yes that is you if you were told you should let your bitch have a litter before you desex her. (which is a load of bull by the way)
Most of my behavioural cases come from dogs that come from a farm or a nice guy who has a bitch and a dog that he breeds from.
Or the accidental pregnancy because the dog next door got in.
The Breeder Identification Number is a joke.
Anyone can get one, and no one seems to monitor it.
Do not be buying into 'oh they are a good breeder, they have been doing it for years' that only means they have been traumatising their bitch by putting her through endless pregnancies. Not a great life for any dog.
I receive requests almost daily from people wanting to rehome their dogs.
Where do these dogs come from? Well that nice lady who just had this one litter. RUBBISH!!!!
The rescues are full.
Where do a lot of these puppies and dogs come from?
Yes, you guessed it, the back yard breeders.
So if you are thinking
'Wouldn't it be nice to have the kids see a litter of puppies be born'
'I wonder what the puppies would look like if we bred these 2 dogs'
'lets make some money from breeding dogs in our backyard although we have no idea about genetics'
Just STOP!!!! There are way too many dogs out there.
Be responsible, don't be selfish. These a living, breathing, emotional ,sentient beings with thoughts not unlike ourselves.
Think Handmaids Tale people

Not a cat expert but I feel that all animals need the opportunity to practice species specific behaviours. Obviously can not allow Cat Burton to kill native wildlife so his outdoor romps are supervised.
Oh! I worked out that Cat Burton turned 10 earlier this year 🎉

How can ACE Freework help our dogs recover from trauma?

Your dog doesn't have to get bitten by another dog at the dog park, or thrown out of a car and abandoned by soulless owners to experience trauma.

There are many experiences that can leave our dog's nervous system in shambles (same for us humans, really).

And trauma that doesn't get released, stays stuck in the body and often shows up in all kinds of - usually unwanted - ways...

Choose to Train Humane with Annie Phenix talks a lot about how important it is to focus on healing first, not just training (if that makes sense to you, you'll love the brand new 30-Day Trauma Reset course - details in the comments)

One of the most powerful and versatile tools in her trauma recovery toolbox is ACE Freework, developed by Sarah Fisher.

And on March 2nd (7pm MST, 9pm EST) she'll talk about that with Joanne Burton from Paw and Order Noosa, Australia’s first and only accredited Animal Centred Education (ACE) Freework specialist

Now this is the kind of doggy day care that I endorse.
Check out my gorgeous girl
Keetah on the bottom right.
She is with the same group of friends every week.
She loves Julie the owner of What Dogs Want
Julie makes sure that the dogs play safely and that they get enough rest during the day.
The dogs are not indoors on slippery floors.
Small groups so that they can be supervised properly.
Appropriate toys.
Lots of shade and swimming available for hot days.
Keetah does not come home
exhausted. That is not what we want from daycare.
If your dog is coming home exhausted from their daycare, chances are that they have been stressed all day.
This is an ideal number of dogs.
I would never send Keetah to an indoor facility with more than 6 to 8 dogs at any given time.
The human to dog ratio is not important. The amount of dogs in one place at a time Does!
Thanks Julie for looking after my precious girl so well for the last 4 years.

Pheonix you are a star.
3rd session.
‘Counting and ready’ game near the car to help her calm, relax and self regulate.
The big difference between positive reinforcement training and ACE FREEWORK is that we are not asking Pheonix not to look at her triggers or reward her for looking away. Pheonix makes her own choices, this is self regulating. As you will see Pheonix does react to people and dogs walking past but wow 😮 her reaction is much less severe than before.
We then moved the ready game into the car because Pheonix has always reacted to people and dogs walking past.
Pheonix did bark once in the car but was able to cope with all the other foot traffic without barking or even getting off her butt.
Well done team Pheonix
