Box Divvy donates $5,000 to Gloucester Grass-fed Meats

The Box Divvy Farmers’ Resilience Fund, donations from members and matched $ for $ by Box Divvy, supports local farmers during times of crisis, such as floods or extreme weather.
The Fund provides either fast, interest-free financial aid or a one-off payment to help farmers recover quickly and continue operating. Unlike government grants, which are often delayed, hard to access, and exclude many farmers, this Fund offers immediate, practical support.

It’s part of Box Divvy’s mission to build a fair, sustainable food system by connecting consumers directly with growers. The Fund strengthens the local food chain and shows Box Divvy’s strong commitment to local agriculture.

Gloucester Grass Fed Meats were hard hit, and we have given a one-off payment of $5,000 to assist with immediate feed costs. To put this in perspective: he has had to bring in 60 tons of hay which cost him $30,000. Demand is up so prices are up, and supply is limited.

We’d like to share a note from Brad.
“The support I have received is inspiring enough to never give up. It is one trait that most farmers have in their blood. My parents were the same and taught me that. I can only thank you so much for your generosity. Thank you. What you have set up to support farmers and suppliers for the better of all the community is inspiring. The Box Divvy community are changing the structure and services for fresh food service in Australia.

Us farmers during this weather event have all lost in different ways. The worst affected have lost everything. Livestock losses are the hardest to deal with, next I see is the loss of productive land for winter which also needs the herd to be sold to processors. So many parts of this flood are destructive to the hard work we do. I have had only one of my old cows pass that I chased around the island, 80 acres for 4 hours on foot that has become a casualty of the floods.

The immediate aftermath?

I will need to sell 50 breeding cows as I now have limited winter crops. Half of my Mount George property has had the topsoil stripped from it, so now the property has lost its value as a farm due to the high loss of livestock numbers. The financial cost for all producers to keep livestock healthy now, with hay and grain, is also a drain on costs. The fact is, that all responsible farmers want their livestock to live a healthy, enjoyable life. We spend a lot of time and money on productive pastures and animal welfare.

Thank you so much again for your support of Gloucester Grass Fed Meats. Your generosity shows that we all are a team, working together.”

Love my bees! I’ve even got a native stingless bee hive in my backyard! ❤️ 🐝 🌸

What can I do in my garden to support the bee environment?

With World Bee Day, Today Tuesday May 20th , helping bees in your garden is ever more important and easier than you might think!

Australia’s bee population is facing a major challenge with the spread of the Varroa mite, a destructive parasite first detected in NSW in 2022. It's now reaching into Victoria and Queensland, and despite early efforts, experts believe it will become widespread across the country. This is a big deal—not just for bees, but for all of us!
Here are some practical, bee-friendly actions you can take:
🌼 Plant Bee-Friendly Flowers
Choose a variety of plants that flower at different times of the year to provide nectar and pollen throughout the seasons. Native Australian plants like grevilleas, bottlebrushes, tea trees, and eucalypts are excellent choices.

🌿 Avoid Pesticides
Chemical pesticides and herbicides can be harmful or even fatal to bees. Opt for organic or natural pest control methods instead.

🌸 Grow a Wild Patch
You’ve heard of ‘wildlife corridors’ there is such a thing known as ‘Wild Patch’. Let part of your garden grow wild with native grasses or flowering weeds like clover or dandelions. These provide food and shelter for bees and other pollinators.

🚫 Skip the Lawn Monoculture
A plain grass lawn offers no food for bees. Incorporate flowering ground covers or intersperse flowering herbs like thyme or oregano. A fabulous rock cover is Myoporum parvifolium 'Purpurea' (commonly known as Purple Creeping Boobialla) and thrives in Australian gardens,

🏡 Provide Bee Hotels
Install bee hotels or nesting boxes for native solitary bees like blue-banded or leafcutter bees. You can make them yourself using bamboo or drilled wood blocks. See post on bee hotels.

💧 Leave Out Water
A shallow dish of water with stones or floating corks gives bees a safe place to land and drink, especially in hot weather.

🪴 Choose Organic Seeds and Plants
Some commercially sold plants are pre-treated with neonicotinoids, which harm bees. Look for organic or untreated options.

🌼 Grow Herbs
Flowering herbs like basil, mint, rosemary, lavender, and chives are pollinator magnets and easy to grow.

Even small gardens or balconies can become bee havens with a few of these changes.

In today's Start Order we have Chinese spinach.
It is locally grown by Simon Chong in Leppington.

I have to say I've never had this before - and it seems many of our members haven't either - so we are looking forward to trying it!

Here's some info:

🍃 Water Spinach aka Kangkung aka Ong Choy aka phak b**g 🍃

Water spinach is known across Asia under different names, but ‘water spinach’ is an apt description of how it’s grown and what it resembles.

As the name suggests, it’s grown either in water – similar to rice – or in very moist soil, and it’s full of the good stuff: trace elements such as Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc – plus a host of antioxidants.

Trim the bottom 3cm and slice the rest into 5-10cm lengths. Make sure you wash the spinach well (soak and refresh) to remove all grit. Drain well, and either eat raw in a salad or cook. You can treat it like you would regular spinach, but the most popular cooking method is to stir-fry with some minced garlic and ginger. Add some sliced chillies and soy sauce, oyster sauce or XO sauce.

If you've had it before, please share your recipes!

My sister lives in Hong Kong, so I asked her for her favourite way to eat it. She gave me this recipe link:
