We have recently been informed through confirmatory testing that two Four Foot Meadow Rolls delivered to us in store by a long-term supplier between the dates of the 1st of June and the 21st of
June have tested positive to Annual Ryegrass Toxicity (ARGT).
We have sold 1400 Four Foot Meadow Rolls in the current season from differing suppliers, that have been tested (via sampling), with nil ARGT detected. However, as alluded to upon secondary
testing, ARGT has been confirmed in two Four Foot meadow rolls sold in June.
In the interests of transparency and horse safety we wanted to let all whom may have purchased a Four Foot Meadow Roll during this time know.

Please note that the Four Foot Rolls are from a different supplier to Meadow Small Squares and Meadow Five-Foot Rolls.

Should you have any questions, concerns or require assistance in any way, please don’t hesitate to make contact, as we are only too willing to help in informing and resolving to the very best of
our ability.

🌿 Have you heard of natural feeding? 🐴

It's easy to feel overwhelmed by synthetic supplements and processed feeds. While there is a place for these feeds, some horse owners prefer to feed a more natural and holistic diet to their horses.

The holistic nutrition diet involves:

🌱 Forage-first feeding that honors their digestive design
🧂 Natural minerals from kelp and sea sources
🌿 Therapeutic herbs for gut health, stress relief & vitality
🍎 Whole foods that actually work WITH your horse's body
🌸 Seasonal feeding that follows nature's rhythms

This isn't about going backward—it's about combining ancient wisdom with modern science for horses that THRIVE, not just survive.

Annual Ryegrass Toxicity (ARGT): Protecting Your Horses & Livestock 🐴⚠️

Annual Ryegrass Toxicity is a serious neurological condition affecting horses, cattle and livestock caused by toxins produced by bacteria in ryegrass seed heads.

What Causes ARGT? The culprit is Rathayibacter toxicus (formerly known as Clavibacter toxicus) bacteria that infects ryegrass seed heads. The cycle begins when tiny migratory nematodes (Anguina funesta) invade developing ryegrass flowers. These microscopic worms colonize the flowering parts and gradually take control of the seed heads, transforming them into distinctive nematode galls.

The real danger emerges when the bacteria and the nematode are present in the same soil. As nematodes burrow into the ryegrass flowers, they unknowingly transport these bacteria with them. Once inside the plant, a biological takeover occurs - the bacteria multiply rapidly and often outcompete the nematodes, claiming dominance over the developing seed heads.

The Persistent Threat: Even after ryegrass dies and dries out, the danger remains. The toxins persist in dead plant material, making dried stalks just as lethal as fresh growth. This creates a year-round hazard - hay cut from contaminated fields becomes a toxic time bomb that can poison animals months later.

Universal Risk: No grazing animal is immune. Horses, cattle, sheep, and even pigs face the same devastating neurological effects when exposed to ARGT-contaminated feed. The toxin doesn't discriminate, making pasture management and feed testing critical for all livestock operations.

Critical Signs to Watch For:

Staggering, unsteady gait, or "drunken" appearance
Head shaking, tremors, or convulsions
Difficulty swallowing or eating
Collapse or inability to stand
Increased sensitivity to noise and movement

Testing & Diagnosis: Veterinary diagnosis involves clinical examination and ruling out other conditions. Pasture testing can identify contaminated areas.

Prevention is Key

Immediately remove animals from pastures and/or hay if ARGT poisoning is suspected
Do not buy hay that has not been tested for ARGT

Stop Falling for These Equine Nutrition Myths! 🐴

Think you know everything about feeding your horse? Think again! Some of the most common "wisdom" shared around stables is actually doing more harm than good to our horses.

MYTH BUSTED: More protein doesn't equal more muscle! Most horses in light work get plenty of protein from quality hay alone. Excess protein just stresses the kidneys and wastes your money.

BRAN MASH MONDAY? This traditional practice can actually CAUSE colic by disrupting your horse's gut microbiome. Consistency is key for digestive health, not weekly dietary shake-ups!

SWEET FEED ISN'T THE DEVIL - it's all about matching the right feed to the right horse. A thin Thoroughbred in training has very different needs than an easy-keeper pony.

GRAIN ISN'T ESSENTIAL - horses survived millions of years on grass alone! Many horses thrive on quality forage without any concentrates.

FAT WON'T MAKE YOUR HORSE "HOT" - it actually provides calm, sustained energy compared to high-starch diets that cause sugar rushes.

NOT EVERY HORSE NEEDS A SUPPLEMENT CABINET - if you're feeding quality hay and appropriate concentrates, you might be throwing money away on unnecessary add-ons.

The biggest nutrition myth? That one-size-fits-all advice works for every horse. Your 20-year-old trail horse has completely different needs than a 3-year-old eventer!

Maintaining your horse's oral health is important for their overall well-being and performance. A healthy mouth ensures proper chewing, digestion, and comfortable bit acceptance during riding.

Regular dental examinations by an equine veterinarian or certified equine dental technician should occur at least annually, though young horses under five and seniors over fifteen may need more frequent checkups. Sharp enamel points, hooks, and uneven wear patterns can develop naturally as horses chew, potentially causing pain, difficulty eating, and behavioral issues under saddle.

Daily observation is your first line of defense. Watch for signs of dental problems including difficulty chewing or chewing only to one side, dropping feed, excessive salivation, bad breath, head tilting while eating, or resistance to the bit. Quidding—dropping partially chewed hay or grain—often indicates sharp points or other dental issues requiring attention.

Proper nutrition supports dental health throughout your horse's life. Quality forage should form the foundation of their diet, as the natural grinding motion of chewing hay helps wear teeth evenly. Avoid feeding exclusively soft feeds, which don't provide adequate dental exercise.
Between professional visits, you can help maintain oral health by providing access to clean, fresh water. Some owners incorporate regular mouth rinses recommended by their veterinarian, particularly for horses prone to oral issues. It is important to avoid sticky treats, such as liquorice, for horses prone to dental issues, as this can stick between teeth causing cavities.

Remember that dental problems can significantly impact your horse's comfort and performance. Pain from sharp teeth or other oral issues may manifest as training difficulties, weight loss, or behavioral changes. Investing in preventive dental care protects your horse's health and can prevent more serious, costly problems from developing. Regular maintenance keeps your equine partner comfortable, healthy, and ready to perform their best.

🧩 BORED HORSES = PROBLEM HORSES 🐴

That weaving, cribbing, or stall-walking isn't just annoying - it's your horse telling you they're mentally understimulated. Horses in the wild spend 16+ hours a day foraging and moving. Confined to stalls with scheduled meals? Recipe for behavioral disasters.

Enter enrichment toys - game changers for horse mental health:
🤜Slow feeders & hay nets: Turn a 20-minute meal into 2+ hours of natural foraging behavior. Reduces boredom, improves digestion, and prevents gulping. If you have a horse that has navigated the slow feed net in now time, then try hanging it in the middle of the stable, with no walls!
🤜Treat balls & puzzle feeders: Make your horse work for rewards. Rolling, pushing, and manipulating toys engages their problem-solving instincts and burns mental energy.
🤜Hanging toys: Jolly balls, rope toys, or even traffic cones provide safe objects to push, bite, and investigate. Satisfies their need to interact with their environment.
🤜Lick toys: Salt licks, mineral blocks, or commercial lick toys provide extended engagement and satisfy natural licking behaviors.

🧠The science behind it: Enrichment reduces stress hormones, decreases stereotypic behaviors (like cribbing), and can even improve immune function. Mentally stimulated horses are calmer, more focused, and easier to train.

💪Pro tips:
Rotate toys weekly to maintain novelty
Supervise initially to ensure safety
Choose horse-safe materials only
Don't just throw toys in - strategic placement matters.

A $20 toy can solve a $2000 behavioral problem. Your horse's brain needs exercise just like their body does.

Did you know? We have a great range of enrichment toys available at Oakford Stockfeeds, from hay balls to yummy licks! Visit us in-store or online to view our range.
