If you want to know how one small change to your feeding routine can help your horse’s digestive health, then read on…

Research has demonstrated that giving your horse a small amount of hay before feeding concentrates, such as grain, reduces the post-feeding inflammatory effects of non-structural carbohydrates (like starch and sugar).

It is well known that non-structural carbohydrates can cause inflammation in the gut. Hence, in order to reduce the effects of grain and starch on your horse’s digestive system, ensure that your horse has a small amount of hay, or has been grazing, prior to feeding their meal.

New Product Alert!

We are now the proud stockists of PodoSens Hoof Oil.

Cavalor® PodoSens is a unique blend of essential oils that provides quick relief to sensitive hooves and promotes hoof elasticity. It also supports optimum hoof growth.

PodoSens contains a high concentration of essential oils such as clove (Syzygium aromaticum), birch (Betula alba), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). These help to reduce sensitivity in the hooves. They also stimulate blood circulation so that toxins are eliminated more efficiently.

Cavalor PodoSens also improves elasticity to the hoof wall, ensuring not only quick relief but also supporting the function of the hoof mechanism, improving hoof quality and promoting hoof growth.

Cavalor PodoSens is a therapeutic hoof oil for horses with sensitive and/or problematic hooves. Unlike other oils used for daily hoof care and for shiny hooves, Cavalor PodoSens should be used sparingly.

We all want the best for our horses. It’s why many horse owners will buy a supplement or feed to give to their horse, based on word of mouth, or specific health claims made by the company.

However, whilst horse owners may always have the best intentions, seldomly do they recheck their horse’s diet to determine how the supplement or feed will influence it.

And, in this scenario, what happens?

In many cases, the horse may receive an excess supplementation in vitamins and minerals, protein and digestible energy. The effect this may have on the horse’s health can be detrimental, and often the hooves will be the first indicator of whether your horse’s diet is working for you horse.

Could you be over supplementing? To find out more, have a read of this week’s article, available on our website now. A link is in the comments.

19/06/2024

A healthy gut microbiome in your horse offers many benefits included supporting efficient digestion, nutrient absorption and building a robust immune system, all of which help a horse to thrive.

To enhance gut health, the first step is to ensure that you provide a diet that is fibre rich. High quality forage such as hay and grass should be the foundation of a horse’s diet, providing essential nutrients and promoting healthy gut motility.

There are also many supplements available to assist gut health. Many of these supplements include prebiotics, which serve as food for beneficial bacteria, and probiotics such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus species, which help maintain a balanced microbial population.

If you would like to provide your horse with a gut supplement, but don’t know where to start, a good starting point is Yea-saac and BioMOS. Both of these products are low cost, and will support your horse’s gut microbiome.

To view our range of gut supplements, head to our online store, or visit us in-store. And remember, if you are looking for a particular product but can’t find it, give us a call and we will try our best to get it in for you!

Do you know what’s in your paddock?

Taking regular walks through your horse’s pasture will help dentify toxic plants and w**ds that can pose a risk to your horse. Many w**ds are growing right now. There are many w**ds, herbs and shrubs that can pose a risk to our horses such as the ones below

Firew**d is a particularly troublesome invader, recognisable by its bright yellow flowers. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can cause liver damage in horses, with symptoms such as weight loss, jaundice, and photosensitivity.

Paterson’s curse is another dangerous plant found in horse paddocks. Its purple flowers are attractive but deceptive. The plant contains toxic alkaloids that can lead to liver damage and a range of health issues, including colic and severe weight loss.

Crofton w**d is highly invasive and toxic. When ingested, it can cause “Tallebudgera Horse Disease,” which leads to respiratory issues, weight loss, and poor condition. Horses exposed to this w**d may exhibit coughing, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing.

Cape tulip is recognisable by its vibrant orange flowers. Both single-leaf and two-leaf varieties are poisonous, containing toxic compounds that affect the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms of poisoning include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and muscle weakness.

Lastly, Cape w**d might appear less threatening with its daisy-like yellow flowers, but it is toxic to horses, especially when consumed in large quantities. It can cause nitrate poisoning, leading to symptoms such as rapid breathing, weakness, and sudden death in severe cases.

What can you do to prevent your horse from ingesting toxic plants?

Remove your horse from heavy w**d infestations.
Make sure your horse is fed well and has access to feed, such as hay, when in their paddock to prevent eating toxic plants.
Spray or hand remove toxic plants
Regularly maintain your pasture, including re-seeding and fertilising with a soil improving fertiliser, to maintain pasture coverage

At Oakford Stockfeeds we have a good range of pasture improvement products such as pastuproducts such as pasture seeds and fertislisers to help you achieve the paddocks of your dreams!

Horses can't vomit.

Unlike humans and many other animals, horses have a unique anatomical structure that prevents them from vomiting. The lower esophageal sphincter in horses is very strong, and their stomachs are positioned in such a way that it makes vomiting nearly impossible. This is why it's crucial to be very careful with a horse's diet and to monitor for signs of colic or digestive distress, as they cannot expel harmful substances from their stomachs through vomiting.

15/06/2024

Hygain Zero and Hygain Meta Safe are two different types of horse feed products designed to meet specific dietary needs. Here are the main differences between the two:

Hygain Zero

Hygain Zero is a low-starch, low-sugar horse feed designed specifically for horses that are prone to metabolic issues such as insulin resistance, laminitis, or Cushing's disease. It contains a high fibre content with no grains, making it suitable for horses that require a low glycemic diet. It is a complete and full feed, meaning that the feeding rate will be higher.

Hygain Meta Safe

Hygain Meta Safe is formulated as a safe, low-starch and low-sugar feed, but it is designed for broader use in managing metabolic health in horses. This feed is suitable for horses requiring controlled energy intake without the spikes in blood sugar that can come from high-starch feeds. It is a concentrate so can be fed in lower amounts, and so is suitable for good-doers.

At Oakford Stockfeeds we stock both Hygain MetaSafe and Zero, as well as Hygain's whole range of products. To view the range, si.oly visit us in store or online.

We are well aware that a human’s emotional state influences their eating behaviour…if you’re sad, you may eat more indulgent foods, compared to when you are happy.

Well, the same can be said about horses. In some instances, a horses feeding behaviour can be influenced by its emotional state.

To find out how, and the ways in which you can encourage your horse’s natural foraging behaviour, check out this week’s blog. Available via the link in the comments!

12/06/2024

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for horses, playing a crucial role in maintaining overall health and well-being. These polyunsaturated fats, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are vital for numerous bodily functions, including anti-inflammatory processes, cellular health, and brain function.

One of the primary benefits of omega-3 fatty acids is their anti-inflammatory properties. Horses, especially those involved in strenuous activities like racing, jumping, or dressage, often experience joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Omega-3s help reduce inflammation, promoting faster recovery and improving joint health. This can lead to enhanced performance and longevity in competitive horses.

Omega-3s are also crucial for maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat. They help to alleviate conditions such as dry skin, dull coats, and allergic reactions, which can be particularly beneficial for horses with sensitivities or skin disorders. Additionally, these fatty acids support hoof health, contributing to stronger and more resilient hooves.

Another significant benefit of omega-3s is their positive impact on the cardiovascular system. They help regulate heart rate and reduce the risk of arrhythmias, contributing to overall heart health. Omega-3s also play a role in maintaining healthy cell membranes, supporting brain health, and enhancing immune function.

In a natural diet, horses would consume omega-3s from fresh pasture grasses. However, many modern feeding practices rely heavily on processed feeds and grains, which are often low in omega-3s. Therefore, supplementation with sources like flaxseed, chia seeds, or fish oil can be essential to ensure horses receive an adequate amount of these crucial nutrients.

We sell a great range of Omega 3 supplements for your horse from h**p products all the way to specialised oils. To view our range, simply visit us online or in-store.

11/06/2024

Elimination diets for horses are specialized feeding protocols designed to identify and manage food sensitivities or allergies. These diets are essential for horses showing unexplained symptoms such as chronic skin issues, gastrointestinal disturbances, or respiratory problems. The process begins by removing all potentially allergenic ingredients from the horse's diet, typically starting with a simple base of non-allergenic feed such as pure grass hay or a specially formulated hypoallergenic feed.

The initial phase of an elimination diet can last several weeks to months, during which the horse's symptoms are closely monitored. This period allows any existing allergens in the horse's system to be flushed out. Once the symptoms have subsided or significantly improved, individual feed items are gradually reintroduced one at a time, usually over a period of several days. This methodical reintroduction helps pinpoint specific ingredients that trigger adverse reactions.

Elimination diets require meticulous planning and patience. Owners and caregivers must ensure the horse's nutritional needs are met while avoiding common allergens such as certain grains, soy, alfalfa, or specific types of hay. It is also crucial to prevent the horse from accessing other food sources during this period, which may involve managing pasture access and controlling treats.

In addition to dietary adjustments, it is often recommended to keep a detailed diary noting any changes in symptoms, feed, and environmental factors. This record-keeping can be invaluable for veterinarians and nutritionists in identifying problematic ingredients and planning a long-term diet that maintains the horse's health and well-being.

Ultimately, elimination diets can significantly improve a horse's quality of life by addressing the root causes of food sensitivities. With careful management and a structured approach, horses can thrive on a diet tailored to their specific needs, reducing discomfort and enhancing overall health.

05/06/2024

Caring for horse hooves in wet weather is essential to prevent problems like thrush, abscesses, and other bacterial infections. Prolonged exposure to moisture can soften hooves, making them more susceptible to these issues. To maintain hoof health, start by ensuring the horse's living environment is as dry as possible. Regularly clean and replace bedding in stalls, and provide dry areas in pastures to minimize time spent standing in mud or water.

Daily hoof inspections are important during wet weather. Clean out the hooves thoroughly to remove any trapped dirt, mud, or debris, which helps prevent the buildup of harmful bacteria and fungi. Applying a hoof conditioner can help maintain the proper moisture balance, but avoid overuse to prevent excessive softness. A hoof sealant can also be beneficial, creating a protective barrier against moisture for horses that spend significant time in wet conditions.

Regular farrier visits are essential to keep hooves properly trimmed and balanced, as overgrown or uneven hooves are more prone to cracks and other issues. If your horse has a history of hoof problems or is particularly vulnerable to wet conditions, consult with your farrier or veterinarian for specialized hoof care products or treatments. By maintaining a proactive hoof care routine, you can help protect your horse's hooves from the adverse effects of wet weather and ensure their overall health and comfort.

If your horse does develop cracks, seedy toe or thrush, there are numerous products that you can use to help clear up the problem. Also, ensure your horse’s diet is balanced, particularly with biotin, msm, methionine and zinc, which all aid in strong and healthy hooves. At Oakford Stockfeeds we have a great range of supplements and hoof care products, which can be viewed in-store or online!

04/06/2024

Offering joint supplements to horses can be a crucial part of their overall health and performance, particularly for those engaged in demanding activities such as competitive sports, heavy work, or advanced training. Joint supplements are often recommended for horses showing signs of stiffness, reduced mobility, or discomfort during movement. These signs can be more prevalent in older horses, as they are more prone to arthritis and other degenerative joint conditions. Additionally, young, growing horses may benefit from supplements to support their developing joints, especially if they are being prepared for a future in athletic endeavors.

Consider joint supplements as a preventive measure for horses with a history of joint issues or those genetically predisposed to such problems. High-performance horses, such as racehorses, jumpers, and dressage horses, often experience significant joint stress and may benefit from the added support. Supplements can include ingredients like glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to support joint health by promoting cartilage repair, reducing inflammation, and improving joint lubrication. Always consult with a veterinarian before introducing any new supplement to ensure it meets the specific needs of your horse and to discuss appropriate dosages and formulations.

At Oakford Stockfeeds we offer a range of joint supplements, from 4cyte to EAC In-fusion. To view our range, simple visit us online or in-store!

Horses communicate using a variety of vocalizations and body language. They neigh, whinny, nicker, and snort to express different emotions and signals. For instance, a whinny can signal excitement or anxiety, while a nicker is often a greeting or a sign of affection. Additionally, horses use their ears, eyes, and body posture to convey their feelings and intentions. Ears pinned back can indicate anger or discomfort, while ears forward show curiosity or attentiveness. Understanding these subtle cues is key to building a strong bond with horses and ensuring their well-being.
