Here's one of my ironclad rules. When a new drug/medication hits the market, I avoid it like the plague for at least 1-3 years.

Why?

So I can see if it is likely to cause harm, adverse reactions, etc. You must understand that all of the initial research for new medications is done with small numbers of animals, and often misses side effects that only pop up when larger numbers of animals are exposed to the treatment.

This new arthritis medication blocks Nerve Growth factor (NGF) which has a reasonable efficacy in reducing arthritic pain.

The big problem is that NGF is found in lots of tissues and organs throughout the body, AND it's super important for the healthy functioning of the immune system, the nervous system, gut, - and really, the whole body!

So it's not surprising to me that so many dogs are experiencing serious adverse reactions. With two doses, the chances of an adverse reaction are about 1 in 550. The more doses (and it's a monthly injection), the higher the chances of harm/injury become.

I think there is a place for this medication as a 'drug of last resort' to extend life when we have done everything else. No way would I give it to my dogs unless this were the case.

However - the company that makes it is aggressively marketing this as a 'wonder drug, totally safe, side effect free'. This is what they are telling vets.

Also, the product insert in some countries list more side effects/adverse reactions than in other countries. This means vets are not being told the possible risks, and they might then recommend this medication for your dogs on the basis of what they know, which is not the full picture.

I'm personally amazed that this drug has been approved. The exact same thing for humans was not, because of the high risk of adverse reactions compared to other readily available arthritis treatments.

My advice? Avoid unless you're out of options!

CBD (cannabis extract) is safe, effective, and non-toxic. PEA is a legal (natural) alternative that works in the same way, and has no known side effects or drug interactions.

Do you have a dog who suffers from pain (many dogs suffer undiagnosed pain without showing any signs of it!), arthritis, dementia, epilepsy, cancer, congestive heart failure, allergies, autoimmune disease, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, anxiety, arthritis or any chronic illness?

CBD and/or PEA (they sometimes work even better when given together) is likely to help your dog feel better, and in some cases leads to dramatic improvements!

If you'd like to get your dog onto one of these safe, effective natural medicines, message me or call me on 0428 278 630. It could be the best thing you ever do for your pet.

It is a very sad day as we have lost one of our favourite regulars today. Beautiful Charlie came to us every 4 weeks for 10 years. He was such a well behaved dog, so easy to groom. αΊ€e will miss him a lot. Our deepest condolences and love go out to his family at this heartbreaking time. His dad sent me a pic of Charlie wearing his Christmas bandana that I recently gave him, he crossed the rainbow bridge wearing it. πŸ˜πŸ’”πŸΎπŸΎπŸŒˆ

πŸ₯¬πŸ₯©πŸŸπŸ¦ͺ 🦴 Species Appropriate Mineral Sources 🦴πŸ¦ͺ🐟πŸ₯©πŸ₯¬

Below are canine species appropriate sources of minerals. The minerals have their quantity listed per 100g, just be mindful of:
- Caloric density of each food
- Appropriate serving size, especially for nutrient dense foods or plant based foods

This will help you understand what minerals are in your dog’s meal, what their approximate quantity is, what may be lacking and what could potentially be in excess.

Based on the below, it is clear that some foods such as organ meats, wheatgrass powder, nuts and seeds have a high nutritional density. These foods are great for adding trace minerals to your pets food but should be used in moderation. Select to feed them based on nutritional gaps within the meal.

As a guide, the energy requirements for a 20kg dog with little activity would require approximately 1000kcal of energy a day.

If you want to calculate your dogs energy needs, use this calculator πŸ‘‰ https://perfectlyrawsome.com/pmr-barf-dog-cat-raw-feeding-calculators/

Remember πŸ’‘
Nuts and seeds require specific preparation to remove anti-nutrients. Read about the preparation here πŸ‘‰ https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=780667517350432&id=100062215736176&mibextid=WC7FNe

Note: Flaxseed is best fed freshly ground otherwise there is potential for the oils within the seed to oxidise and put pressure on the liver. Being high in phytoestrogens, flaxseed may also promote oxidative stress and the antioxidant content of the meal should be increased accordingly. ⚠️ If your dog isn't feeling well and has loose stools, rice is the LAST thing you want to give him. It's true he needs fiber to absorb excess fluids and nutrients to replace the ones he’s lost ... but rice has neither!

Here's why you should avoid rice for your dog ...

🍚 Arsenic Is Common In Rice
Health effects from arsenic include cancer, vascular disease, heart disease, high blood pressure, neurotoxicity and reduced brain function. Arsenic is in pesticides and herbicides, wood preservatives, phosphate fertilizers, industrial waste … so it drains into the groundwater that feeds wells and irrigation systems. And rice appears to absorb more arsenic from water than other crops.

🍚 Rice Can Lead To Diabetes
A diet high in carbohydrates like rice increases the insulin demand in your dog, and that stresses the pancreas and can lead to diabetes … and today 1 in 300 dogs will get diabetes.

🍚 Rice Is Nutrient Poor
Rice is devoid of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It’s a carbohydrate and dogs don’t need carbs. They survived for thousands of years on other animals, fats and plant materials like berries and grasses.

🍚 More Rice Means Less Meat
When there’s rice in dog food, that means there’s less meat in the formulation and dogs need MEAT to make essential amino acids like taurine. And rice often outweighs other ingredients and can lead to weight gain and diabetes.

🍚 Rice Isn’t Natural Food For Dogs
Like wheat, corn and barley, rice isn’t found in an edible state so it needs to be processed. Wild dogs don't forage in rice or wheat fields ... they're looking for the henhouse.

So really, rice isn’t nice … for your dog.
