Did you know that if you're driving a Ute with a dog in the tray, you are liable to fines of up to $8000 and even inprisonment if that dog is not safe! Every year vets see dogs injured (or worse) falling from Utes. Each state has slightly different legislation, so its worth checking up on the rules, especially if you're travelling interstate.

Our advice is to use a cage on the back of the ute, where the dog can be protected from sun, wind and rain. If a cage isn't possible, use a short swivel tether in the middle of the tray, and keep the rope or chain long enough so that the dog can lie down but not long enough so that the dog can get near the edge. If the dog can peek round the edge of the cab, then that chain is too long! Metal trays can be slippery and burning hot so always provide a rubber mat under the paws. Provide water on long trips and protect your pet from dust when on dirt roads. Talk to us if you need any advice about travelling with your dog.

Christmas Hazards - this is a long post but please read on....
Most humans LOVE this time of year! However, pets may not be so keen. You can keep them safe by watching out for these hazards.
1. Guests. Pets can get stressed by people they don't know, invading "their" space. Guests do not know your animal's routine and can leave doors or gates open. Visiting children can be noisy or boisterous. Make sure your pet has a safe and quiet place to retreat to if they need it.
2. Christmas tree. Make sure its fixed securely and that lights and electric cords are safely tied away.
3. Leftovers. Human Christmas food is too rich for pets and can lead to upset tummies or even dangerous pancreatitis. Pets should stick to their normal diet, without any ham scraps or leftovers.
4. BBQ Skewers are a disaster waiting to happen when greedy dogs are around. Make sure skewers don't get eaten or accidentally fall on the ground, and don't feed your pet cooked bones which can splinter and cause internal injuries.
5. Sultanas and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. No Christmas cake scraps for dogs please.
6. Chocolate is toxic to dogs - the darker the choc, the more dangerous. No edible treats under the tree - you might find Santa's doggy helper has helped himself. Call us if your dog has eaten chocolate!
7. Lilies. Beautiful Christmas lilies are toxic to cats - the leaves, stamens and the water in the vase too. Best not to have them in the house.
8. Snakes are out and about in summer. Avoid long grass or places where snakes like to feed on mice, like chook pens and barns.
9. Decorations like tinsel and lights are sparkly and appealing to pets but can cause intestinal blockages if eaten.
10. Macadamia nuts. Toxic for dogs, causing vomiting and tremors.

Call us if you have any concerns about your pet's health over the Christmas period
