Last week of Quarantine 😎

Updates as follows
🐟 Metal Skin Blue Tails - plenty of babies during quarantine - no issues with the fish.
🐟 Snakeskin Blue Dragons - have had babies but predate on their young.
🐟 Firecrakers - prone to escaping the aquarium - have lost about 6. Fish have come through quarantine well though.

All in all fish are healthy, quarantined and will be great for breeding.

🐟🐟 With the addition of three new lines of live bearers this week I thought it a great opportunity to share my quarantine process 🐟🐟

Quarantining new aquatic fish is an essential process to ensure the health of them and to ensure they do not have any parasites or diseases. Here’s a summary of how I quarantine any new fish.
1. Set Up a Quarantine Tank: I prepare a separate quarantine tank, typically 20 to 65 litres with sponge filters and if needed an aquarium heater. I do not use any substrate as I want to see any parasites expelled by the fish. Moreover, having a bare bottom tank makes cleaning the tank easier through the quarantine process.
2. Acclimate the Fish: I gradually introduce the new fish to the quarantine tank by floating the transport bag to equalise temperature for between 15-30 minutes. If fish are acquired locally I slowly mix tank water with the bag water either by drip acclimatisation or by adding small amounts of tank water to the bag. If the fish are flown in from interstate I will use the plop and drop method to get them into clean water faster.
3. Observe and Monitor: Keep the fish in quarantine for a minimum of 4 weeks. During this period, monitor for any signs of illness.
4. Treat Proactively: During Quarantine I treat the fish for worms, parasites, fungal and bacteria diseases. For the entire quarantine period I treat with aquarium salt. In addition I worm the fish during the first week with Levamisole. The second week I treat the fish with Tri-Sulfa. The third week I treat the fish with an antibiotic. The fourth week no medication apart from the aquarium salt. If I observe any issues a may change order of how I medicate (I change to the medication for any parasite or illness that presents itself)
5. Maintain Water Quality: Perform regular water changes and as the tanks are quarantine tanks and thus not ‘cycled’ or ‘seasoned’ I add prime and stability every day.

The female guppy plays a central role in guppy breeding programs, as her genetics, health, and reproductive traits directly influence the quality and success of offspring. Here are key points highlighting her importance:

1. Genetic Contribution

• Female guppies contribute 50% of the genetic makeup of their offspring. Selecting females with desirable traits—such as vibrant colouration, body shape, or resistance to diseases—is crucial for producing high-quality guppies.
• They often have less conspicuous colours than males, making it easier to focus on traits like body structure, size, and health.

2. Reproductive Capacity

• Female guppies are livebearers and can give birth to 20–200 fry per cycle, depending on age, size, and health.
• They store s***m from a single mating for months, enabling multiple births without re-mating. This trait can be used strategically in breeding programs.

3. Selection for Specific Traits

• Females with strong genetics enhance the expression of specific traits in the next generation. For instance, pairing a female with good body shape with a vibrantly coloured male can produce balanced offspring with both desired traits.

4. Role in Hybridisation

• In crossbreeding programs, selecting females from different strains or species helps introduce new traits, increase genetic diversity, or achieve specific goals like unique colouration or improved robustness.

5. Health and Fry Survival

• A healthy female ensures higher fry survival rates. Her diet, water conditions, and stress levels directly impact the development and vitality of the fry.

6. Influence on Breeding Dynamics

• Female choice can influence breeding outcomes in natural or semi-controlled environments. Observing female preferences helps breeders understand compatibility and select successful pairings.

By carefully selecting and managing female guppies, breeders can maintain high-quality lines, introduce innovations, and optimise the breeding program’s success.
