Wowzers after all the cold and wet crazy weather the last few days we all need a bit of sunshine in our livesβ¦.. and what could be sunnier than a banana wrasse !
The banana wrasse or Halichoeres chrysus in scientific terms is probably one of my favourite marine fish for many reasons, they are in expensive, social - you can keep more than one, small, commonly available, reef safe, peaceful and super easy to keepβ¦.. plus they are more yellow than a canary!
If youβre a beginner or an expert thereβs always room in your tank for a banana wrasse. They are very easy to keep and will feed on frozen or prepared foods with eagerness. They are also social and a small harem can be happily maintained in the home aquarium with no issues in regards to aggression providing there is only 1 male (males will develop electric lime green patterns on the face and a pale pink tail), they look particularly good schooling with chromis and are extremely active.
The only tanks they wonβt do well in are those with no substrate as they need a decent sand bed to sleep in at night. Usually a little shy when first introduced they will often hide for a few days making sporadic appearances, after a few days they will be out and about shinning their golden goodness in your tank. They really are a fantastic addition reef tanks and will bring that splash of bright yellow that always stands out in any tank.

These are found in Western Australia and into Northern Territory waters and are one of the most sought after Australian corals by overseas collectors. What they lack in size they make up for with their amazing colours, interesting feeding behaviours and ease of keeping. (Avoid keeping with angels and butterflies as they generally taste like candy to these fish!) They are generally a fairly easy to keep LPS coral and do well in lower light and flow areas not favoured by other species of coral so are great for filling those awkward spots lower in the aquarium. WA button scoly would have to be one of the most colourful corals in the ocean with every shade of green, teal, orange, red, purple and in rare cases golds, yellows, blues and pale pinks. Be warned they tend to be like PokΓ©mon - once you collect one you need to collect more!

It never ceases to amaze me when you watch corals feed especially species like scoly and desh which make amazing transformations in the presence of food. In this video a desh has been fed some reef roids and it has extended its feeding tentacles and secreted a mucus substance to trap the food and itβs slowly drawing the food and mucus into its mouth which is fully open exposing the digestive filaments. In an hour or two this guy will puff up beautifully as he digests his morning meal π
Saturday open 10am - 5pm Sunday open 11am - 3pm Loads of beautiful fish and corals in store now including marginal butterflies (great for aptasia control and feeding well).
Beautiful pair of net collected sailfin scooter dragonettes, feeding greedily on frozen brineshrim and starting to take pellets $85 pair
Hey Hey Aussie hand collected fish ready for Easter sat-sun π Arriving tommoow night so not ready for our 10-4am Friday open apologies but hopefully worth the wait. We will also have a nice top up of corals coming. Happy Easter and reefing P.s to friends and family, fish are containerised to reduce fighting and other damage to each other whilst transporting via road, it's also a good method to get them ready for shipping in bags. They use less oxygen already being adapted to a confined environment. Anything after a couple days not sent goes into larger aquariums for feeding Look forward to showing more behind the scenes π
Check out this amazing Pinnate long fin bat fish, an absolutely beautiful specimen, for someone with a large tank and placid feeding tank mates (not suitable with big greedy tangs etc). I have him currently feeding well and he will be ready for sale next weekend. A stunning rare show stopping fish, only 1 available and like mentioned above will need a person with a large tank dedicated to him and more passive fish species and corals.
