Hosted a little enrichment party for some special doggies a while back!
Enrichment activities add in the fun factor and help to keep your dog (or cat) mentally stimulated. Quick to prep and a great activity for the kids to get involved in, my 3yo son loves to help 🐶

Some of my older clients might remember the beautiful, big, boofy Dessa… the gentle Cane Corso doggo. Heartbroken over Dessa’s passing recently, cancer took her all too soon.
Thoughts go out to her loving dad Mike, they had the greatest bond and she will be so dearly missed x

Wow what a hectic few weeks it has been! A brand new puppy certainly keeps you on your toes!
Our little Rex grew like a w**d the first week. He and his 9 littermates were picked up by the RSPCA at 6 weeks old as starving little pups, so he had a bit of catching up to do.
Some things I focused on in the first week of a new puppy:
- setting up a ’safe place,’ where Rex could relax and get used to the household (ie crazy toddler!)
- lots of cuddles, toys and being fed in his safe place. Considering we brought him home at 7 1/2 weeks and he already had a traumatic past my first goal was simply to help him feel safe and loved.
- positive reinforcement for nice interactions with others in the house
- toilet training! Consistently taking him to a puppy pad or outside and praising heavily for correct toileting. I also found it helpful to restrict his access to areas of the house to create a better chance of toiletting in the ‘right’ spot. **tip** remove all house rugs/mats BEFORE you bring the puppy home! Just trust me on this one 😅
- start socialising early. We had friends come to visit Rex at the house, including children, lots of little car rides and he even went for some trips tound the neighbourhood in my son’s old bassinet pram! Bonus pic in the comments 🤣
Early, safe socialisation is absolutely vital in raising a puppy, particularly during their major developmental period between 8-14 weeks.

We have a new face here at Kate’s Mates… everyone meet Rex!
We adopted Rex over the weekend from the RSPCA, where he was surrendered at six weeks old along with his nine littermates!
Rex is already settling in nicely and I am so excited to have my first puppy as a dog trainer.
Puppies require allot of time and careful socialisation in their first few months of life, stay tuned for tips and tricks on puppy-raising and to follow Rexy’s journey into adulthood! 🐶

Meet Archie!
Gorgeous Cavoodle Archie is a firm favourite amongst his doggy friends. Archie is super friendly, super chilled, adores children, other dogs, other people and just life in general 💜
Archie’s wonderful owners often allow me to hire him as a stooge dog… or a calm dog I can use to integrate into training sessions for more nervous or reactive dogs.
Keep on being you Archie, you are wonderful!

Today we celebrated the end of little Banjo’s two week board’n’train! We used a tonne of enrichment, desensitisation, counter-conditioning and positive reinforcement to work on a few behavioural issues he was having. Proud to say Banjo has absolutely aced it, growing in confidence and developing some lovely coping mechanisms.
Absolute superstar! ❤️

Incredibly sad to say that my boy Batesy joined his brother Ali in doggy heaven last night 💔
Batesy was adopted from Shenton Park Dog Refuge 12 years ago as a troubled adolescent puppy. He grew in confidence and taught me so much over the years and inspired me to transition from a full-time vet nursing career to dog training and eventually running my own business.
Last night as I was saying goodbye to him I was filled with happy memories of our times together… the countless walks and cuddles, the road trips and adventures, the lazy mornings and late night snacks. It made me happy to have been able to give him a good life and a peaceful ending for his cancer-ravaged body.
This week I will be hugging all of my doggo clients just a little tighter 💛
Walking them for that little bit longer 💚
Making training just that little bit funner 💜
Adjusting the treats dose to be just a bit bigger 🤎
Our dogs give us their all and they deserve the best back. I am so happy to be able to assist in helping my canine clients to live their very best lives and be the best version of themselves, just like my darling Batesy was 🐶
And please hug your dog a little bit tighter… they are worth it 🥰

Arlo update… 5 months of complete rest and then another 6 of leashed walks only… a very long and restrictive recovery to help a damaged tendon heal. But Arlo is very happy to be home and resting with his wonderful dad.
You got this mate… we are all cheering you on!

Thoughts are with our beautiful friend Arlo, he had an accident yesterday and has torn his cruciate ligament, plus is still in hospital awaiting more tests.
Fingers and paws crossed for a quick recovery darling boy, your doggy friends will be looking forward to your return x

Meet Ruby!
This gorgeous five year old Labradoodle has been a friend of Kate since she was a tiny puppy. She is a bright, happy, bubbly ball of energy and is always everyone’s best friend.
Ruby moved down south last year (😭😭,) but we all look forward to her visits and holidays.
Can’t wait to seeing you again Ruby! ❤️

‘It wasn’t us we swear!’ 👀👀
Actually… good dogs DO dig holes! Digging is an instinctual behaviour and completely normal for our canine friends. Dogs dig to:
🐶 create a ‘bed’ or den
🐶 find prey or vermin
🐶 seek a scent
🐶 hide a toy or bone
🐶 relieve boredom
🐶 just because it feels damn good!
You will make your best mate very happy by giving them a place that they CAN dig. Fill up a kids clamshell paddling pool with sand and bury some toys in there, section off a part of the yard or take your dog to the beach! I love to throw a pile of old towels/cushions together with some treats hidden inside and just let your dog go nuts.

Meet ‘Sunny!’ Rescue dogs have a really special place in my heart and Sunny’s story is absolutely heartbreaking. Abandoned in a backyard as a young, sick puppy Sunny was lucky enough to come into the care of a wonderful young couple who took the time to not only nurture her back to physical health but also begin the long journey of healing her mental and emotional state.
With some dedicated training we have helped Sunny to build confidence and manage her fears/anxieties, although it is certainly still a work in progress.
I was thrilled to see some massive leaps in Sunny’s training today and happy to capture this sweet moment with her 🥰
Eternally thankful for all of the wonderful dog owners out there who take on these beautiful rescue dogs and give them a second chance at life.
