Trusty Tails - Behaviour Training

Trusty Tails - Behaviour Training IMDT qualified dog trainer, Canine Hoopers World Instructor (CHWI), Fear Free Certified Professional. DLGSC Independent Public Access Test Assessor

Trusty Tails comes to life in 2020 when, the idea of a career change and meeting some inspirational professionals, have paved the path to re-start a journey that was put on hold 10 years prior and go back to studying animal behaviour. The name Trusty Tails represents my training approach, which emphasizes strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners by building trust, leading to safer decision-making by the dog over time.

Let’s all remember to be respectful and polite and respect leash laws.

And not just for dogs that might need space but also for humans that might not want your friendly dog jumping all over them.

Just the other day I did a confidence session with a kid who is scared of dogs because they have run up to him way too many times while he was playing, or chased him in the playground (by law dogs have to be on leash within 5mt of playgrounds) and stolen his ball and popped it…and the owners have not apologised nor offered to buy a new ball!

Where have common sense and basic manners gone?!

Canine Conversations so sorry this happened! It’s appalling 😤

Why is Asking for Space Such a Trigger?

Today, I experienced something that left me both frustrated and disheartened. While with a sweet little Staffy and her Mum, a man with two Groodles allowed his dogs to approach us. I asked, “Can you please call your dog?” As I turned to walk away and create space.

His response was unexpected and quite confronting: “Don’t you dare talk to me like that!” He pointed at me as he spoke, and I was shocked and shaken by his reaction.

A lovely passerby stepped in, kindly telling him that he needed to control his dogs. It made us feel supported, but the situation only worsened when the dogs ran off the designated beach and headed to Pinnaroo, clearly out-of-bounds for the dogs. This highlighted a complete lack of control.

When they eventually returned, they went straight for my bag, trampling through my belongings and eating my food. I laughed nervously as this unfolded—not because it was amusing, I felt uncomfortable and in disbelief. Once again, “Can you please get your dogs off my things and stop them from eating my food?”

What followed was disheartening. He ignored me for what felt like 20 seconds before finally attempting to retrieve his dogs—one slipped its collar and ran back. Not once did he apologise. Not a word of accountability. It felt as though he was purposefully waiting, defying the request to exert some kind of control over the situation.

Meanwhile, the dog I was supporting, alongside her mum, watched as our belongings were trampled and my food eaten. It was upsetting on so many levels.

Here’s what I truly struggle to understand: why are people so angry when others ask for space or control of their dogs? A simple apology or acknowledgment would have defused the situation. I wasn’t rude, nor was I unreasonable.

The law is clear:
• Dogs are required to remain on lead in certain areas and times.
• Dogs must be under effective control at all times.

This isn’t just about legal compliance—it’s about respect and safety. Imagine if my children helped themselves to someone else’s picnic; it wouldn’t be acceptable. So why is it different for dogs?

I know most dog guardians are responsible, but I can’t help but wonder: why do some feel so triggered when reminded of the boundaries we all share? Respect and communication go a long way.

To the kind lady who spoke up, thank you. Your support was a bright moment in an otherwise upsetting interaction. ( especially as you didn’t have a dog on your hot girl morning walk!)

Let’s continue to advocate for responsible dog ownership and respectful community spaces.

Have you experienced something similar? How do you handle these situations?
Please; if you feel angry when asked for space can you help me to understand why?

Yes I know I can’t spell. 😅🤍☀️

It is HOT 🥵 and it looks like it is going to be like that all week!
A lot of scentwork practice is obviously in the cards, however I have recorded a quick video for you guys to show some other fun activities that you can do indoors (I can do them in my tiny living room with giant dogs so no excuses 😂).
It was supposed to be a live but then I decided to edit if so it's shorter and more clear.
Please make sure that you

🐾 train on non slippery surfaces
🐾 use safe equipment/obstacles
🐾 increase criteria just enough so your dog understands the game and gets it right every time
🐾 make it simple but fun and engaging, any training is going to benefit you and your dog and definitely improve your communication
🐾 short fun sessions and make sure your dog has access to plenty of water

This is some very basic exercises but if you are interested in some more serious fitness (which is too incredibly great to do indoors on hot days) please check LoveDog Training Co for appropriate fitness and conditioning.

Happy New Year everyone!!

Lots of things happening already and this year we are planning some new classes outdoors. Classes are going to be all about fun and will focus on building a solud engagement, recall and off leash reliability together with consolidating basic obedience through a series of super fun games!
Because the facilities we are using need to be booked in advance to secure prime spots I am going to ask you guys whether you’d prefer classes on weekend mornings (likely Sundays) or weekdays evenings (5-8pm depending on how many classes).
Please comment below as classes will be up for booking very soon!!

When strangers touch our dogs without consent, it can be unsettling for them—much like an unexpected touch feels to us. Dogs deserve respect and agency over their bodies. Politely guiding others to wait for the dog’s signals, like approaching willingly or leaning in, helps ensure interactions are safe and comfortable.

SO MUCH OF THIS 🤩🤩🤩🤩

SO MUCH OF THIS 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Their excitement is often the ONLY reason we want them to meet another dog.
They can drag us (often at speed), towards another dog they want to meet.
Even with the happiest/friendliest dog that pulls towards another dog....things can change in an instant once they actually meet.💥
Sometimes the over excitement of seeing another dog means they haven't assessed the situation and often we haven't assessed the situation either, we just want to make them happy!
Face to face, tight leads and over excitement when meeting another dog can and does lead to very big issues.
Take the time to assess.
Take the time to teach your dog how to meet dogs in a way many dogs appreciate!

🌳 We need these signs in Perth parks! 🐾

It’s frustrating how many people don’t realise it’s not just about their dog! 🐕💬 Your dog might be friendly, but if they run up to mine, my dog won’t like it.
🚫 If a park is on leash only, respect the rules! It’s already tough managing a reactive dog, and those of us with reactive pups know how hard it is to find peaceful places to walk without constant triggers. 💔 Let’s make parks safer and stress-free for everyone! 🙏

We specialise in training all types of dogs—especially those with reactive behaviours. 🐕✨
Our goal is to strengthen the bond between you and your dog using trust-based, ethical, and fear-free methods. 💙 Follow us for valuable training tips and insights, or visit our website to learn more about our behaviour classes. 📲 Have questions? Feel free to DM us anytime!

What's the big deal ❓What have they got to do with my dogs reactivity ❓
Pain 💥
If you can hear "click clack" on a hard surface, your dogs nails cannot go into the surface, so that pressure and force can go back up right into their feet.
The toes can splay because they cannot do anything else BUT become misaligned if their nails/claws are too long.
That affects the foot, that affects the joints and that can affect a dogs behaviour.
Pain affects behaviour and yes....pain can cause reactivity.
Is it just a coincidence that when your dog leaves the soft carpet or lawn of your house and goes outside on the footpath their behaviour changes?
For some dogs, taking this simple step can make a huge difference to their reactive outbursts.
Cutting or grinding the nails can make a big difference.
If you can hear "click clack"...it really is time for the "clip clip".

Nia the wonderful! This dog is only 10 months old but she is mature beyond her age. Selection of the best breeding lines plays a big role on how much this dog is coming along leaps and bounds together with a great team effort for her training.
Today she was stared at, touched and approached by just about everyone at the shops because you know she’s stunning and she remained calm, collected and focused on her handlers.
And while laying down in front of Coles another dog walked past her and she didn’t bat an eyelid! Pawfect!!

🤯Did you know? Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors compared to our 6 million. No wonder they love sniffing so much! 👃💨

Sure, teaching dogs to walk by our side is important, but don't overlook the joy and enrichment they get from slowing down to “smell the flowers.” 🌸 Sniffing isn’t just fun; it stimulates their brains, leaving them as tired as if they’d had a high-energy walk. It’s like dogs’ version of social media, a place for them to catch up on all the latest ‘pupdates’ in the neighborhood! 📲🐶

Sniffing is also calming for dogs, triggering a release of mood-boosting dopamine. Think of it as yoga or meditation for your pup—time to decompress and unwind. 🧘♀️🐕

Allowing your dog to stop and sniff builds trust and strengthens your bond. They’ll look forward to walks that offer both exercise and exploration, and they’ll see you as their source of fun and security. 💙

So, take your time, explore new routes, and try scent-based games at home with dog-safe herbs and plants! 🌿
