How To Brush Your Dog's Teeth and Help Prevent
Periodontal Disease.

Just like people, dogs need their teeth brushed regularly to maintain their overall health. If a dog's teeth are not kept clean, he/she can develop many medical complications that can lead to disease that can be life threatening. As periodontal disease affects 85% of dogs over four years old, brushing your dog's teeth should be a regular activity in maintaining your dog's overall health and part of their regular daily routine as much as eating, exercise and grooming are.

🐥🐰
Easter treats like chocolate and hot cross buns can be toxic to our furry friends and should be kept well away from prying paws.

To ensure your four-legged friend stays happy and healthy during the Easter period, keep these 10 ingredients well out of reach:

• Alcohol - Can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, respiratory problems, coma and death.

• Chocolate - Toxic to dogs, can cause hyperactivity, nervousness, tremors, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and death.

• Coffee or caffeine products - Can cause hyperactivity, restlessness, vomiting, heart palpitations, tremors, collapse and death.

• Cooked bones - Can splinter and cause internal damage or obstruct the intestine.

• Grapes, sultanas, raisins, currants - Contain a substance toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

• Nuts, especially macadamia nuts - Contain oils and fats that can upset stomachs and potentially cause pancreatitis. Macadamias are poisonous to dogs.

• Onions, garlic, chives - Can cause gastrointestinal irritation and lead to red blood cell damage.

• Salt and salty foods - In large amounts can cause excessive thirst or sodium ion poisoning, as well as vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors, seizures and death.

• Xylitol (sugar substitute found in chewing gum, lollies, toothpaste) - Extremely toxic to dogs, can cause hypoglycemia, seizures, liver failure and death.

• Foil and wrappers – Although these aren’t edible, they’re sure to be around at Easter time, are easily swallowed by curious pets, and can do serious harm.

‼️As a precaution, owners should check their vet’s Easter opening hours and locate their nearest after-hours clinic, so they can act quickly if their pet becomes unwell.

🚨URGENT: Cat Haven needs your help now!🚨

With a huge increase in surrenders coming in this year, with ❗210❗ cats coming in just last week alone and only 89 adoptions we are once again at capacity. With over 300 cats on site and 600 in foster homes we need your help.

We have decided to have some fun with our St Catrick’s Day special and make all adult cats (over one year old) $17 to adopt from tomorrow through til Sunday and Kittens adoption fees have been reduced to $175 for our saleabration adoption event tomorrow night from 6-8:30pm.

Incoming cats are being housed in dog crates and carriers as we do not have the space to house them here at Cat Haven. Some of the cats in our care have been waiting for their second chance for over 5 weeks, can that be with you?

All normal stringent adoption procedures apply, with everyone adopting from the shelter or from foster. This decision was not made lightly and has been thoroughly discussed and researched prior to this decision being made. We reserve the right to refuse an adoption without explanation.

Can you please share this post with you friends, family and colleagues?

⏰Adoption hours:
🐾Thursday: 10am-8:30pm – Discounted kitten adoptions 6-8:30pm
🐾Friday: 10am-6:30pm
🐾Saturday & Sunday: 10am-4pm

*Kittens special whilst kittens are still available
**Includes cats in foster as well ❤️

Bruce found a home! 🥰

Thank you to our massive Facebook family for helping us find Bruce the palliative-care home of his dreams. The post absolutely exploded with interest and we are so thankful that we have such kind, caring supporters that want the best for the animals in our care. 😍

Iqra, pictured with Bruce, told us that she saw the post Monday night and drove all the way from Geraldton first thing Tuesday morning to pick him up!

For the first time in about 5 months, Bruce finally had his own bed to sleep in. He has his own toys, his own bowl, and most important of all, his own human to call his own to live out his twilight years in peace.

Thank you again Iqra for choosing Bruce - we will all miss you so much matey! 🩷🐾

“What do you do when your dog grows old?
When their feet are tired and their pads are worn.
When your words of praise are hard to hear,
And their eyes are milky from all of their years.
When their face is changed and turning grey,
What do you do when your dog grows old?
You Love them. You rub the feet that carried them by your side.
You praise them louder and harder,
You show them your pride,
You guide them the way they guided you,
And you never let them get as lost as you once were,
You kiss their nose and hold their face,
And when it comes time to put them to their final rest,
You do so knowing you Loved them,
And they Loved you more...
they Loved you more.”

Is it OK for Dogs to Share a Bed?

It sure is!

If dog’s are in a pack environment ie. doggie daycare, cuddling up together can be practical in terms of warmth, or can be comforting as dogs enjoy company and might settle together in a knot with their best furry friend.

However, it's still essential to give each dog its own bed or dog crate. If one dog is tired, needs some space, is feeling agitated, or isn't well, they require a private area to relax and stretch out without feeling pestered.

Always ensure all dogs are REGULARLY treated against all worms/parasites & that their daycare bedding is thoroughly cleaned between visits.

Sharing is Caring.

LOOKING OUT FOR WILDLIFE DURING HEATWAVE:

As of 8:20pm it is still 37.5 degrees outside in the City of Joondalup.

While many of us have air conditioning, sprinklers, a pool or the beach nearby, many birds and wildlife species without access to water will be suffering right now, and moreso during the current heatwave.

You can do a lot to help them:

1) Please consider keeping bird baths full, and if you’re near a natural area leaving dishes of cool water out for the bobtails.

2) if you are near Gwelup, an out of control bushfire has broken out late this afternoon. Birdlife not killed will be fleeing so it’s even more important to provide fresh water.

The frequency of heat waves in the last 4 weeks has been highly unusual and I don’t recall temps remaining near 40 degrees well into the night like this.

While temps further to the north in WA are often higher than the south west of WA, which includes Perth, most local species of birds aren’t adapt to such sustained high temperatures.

Another thing you can do for the long term (and to improve the look of streetscapes, reduce the heat island effect) is to request a free verge tree from the City of Joondalup (I recommend one of the native options). More shade, more food and habitat for Birdlife ✅. Request one here:

15/02/2024

☀️ With high temperatures across much of Australia, Perth WA is currently sitting on 41c, knowing how to keep your pet safe from the heat has never been more important. Heatstroke in pets can be subtle but deadly, so we recommend you follow these simple tips to know what to watch out for this summer.

• Watch out for heatstroke

All animals are susceptible to heatstroke, so you need to make sure you take active steps to prevent it. Like in humans, heatstroke is when an animal’s body temperature becomes elevated above the normal range, to the point where they can’t maintain a healthy temperature.

It’s a very serious condition that can cause organ failure or death, and can be even worse in animals with other medical conditions (like heart problems or breathing problems), a thick or long coat, very young or very old animals, or short-nosed or flat-faced breeds such as pugs, bulldogs, as well as Persian and Himalayan cats.

Some signs of heatstroke include relentless panting (that increases as heatstroke progresses), drooling, salivating, agitation, restlessness, very red or pale gums, a bright read tongue, breathing distress, vomiting and/or diarrhoea (possibly with blood), lethargy, weakness and muscle tremors.

If your pet does develop heatstroke, start emergency first aid to help normalise their body temperature by applying or spraying tepid or cool water onto their fur or skin, followed by fanning. Don’t use ice cold water or ice as this may make the problem worse. Get them to a vet as soon as possible – even if you just suspect they have suffered heatstroke, it’s still better to be safe.

• How to keep your pet safe

Keeping your pet cool will help protect them in these hot summer months. Avoid exercising your pet in the extreme heat – on very hot days, try to walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when it’s cool. Avoid walking on hot sand, concrete or asphalt. If you can’t hold the back of your hand to the pavement outside for more than a few seconds, it’s too hot for your pet.

On hot, humid days, you should bring your pet inside if the indoor environment is cooler (for example, if you have air conditioning). Make sure your pet has plenty of clean fresh water as well as extra water sources in case of spillage. If they are outside, it’s important to provide your pet with a cool, shaded area with good ventilation. Good ventilation is particularly important as many animals cool down by panting which requires good air flow.

Don’t ever leave your pet in a car or vehicle. Temperatures in a car can reach more than double the outside temperature even on mild days, and parking in the shade or leaving the windows open doesn’t really help. It can take just six minutes for an animal to die in a hot car – so if you see an animal suffering in a hot car, please contact your local RSPCA or the police urgently. Dogs can also overheat when left on the back of a ute, including by burning their feet or other body parts on the ute tray.

Remember that, just like us, pets can get sunburned – and also just like us, sunburn can lead to conditions like skin cancer. This is particularly a concern in white-haired dog and cats. Pet sunscreen is an option for some animals, but also, keeping your pet in the shade as much as possible will help minimise the risk of sunburn.

Small animals like rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, rats and mice are highly susceptible to heatstroke. They are also often confined to cages which means they can’t move into cooler places. Make sure they have a cool, shade and well-ventilated area with access to clean, fresh drinking water. On very hot days, this might mean moving them inside.

By taking some precautions, we can all help ensure that the hot summer months are as safe as possible for our pets.
