Helping poultry in Hot weather
Please everyone be aware that your small coops turn into ovens very quickly in hot weather. Just like leaving them in a locked car on a 35 deg day. Place your pens under trees and vines for shade if you cannot grow anything over them shade clothe is a great help or let them out to free range for the day so they can find their own cool spot.
Water sprayers are a fantastic way of keeping your birds cool. You only need them for a few days of the year when we get the heat come in, but once you have them in place just a little jet maintenance each year and they are ready for the next hot day. A coop with a water sprayer on tin roof will be 10 deg cooler inside on a hot day.
Poultry will not drink hot water; they will dehydrate very quickly in hot weather without cool water. Small quantities get hot very quickly; you want large amounts to keep cool. But also taking care not to have your chickens fall into a bowl they cannot get out of and drown.
Don’t be scared to hose your birds, just like us a cold shower makes them feel so much better.
Damp mud holes help as well they love to bath in them with coolness from the wet ground.
Frozen ice bottles in their water bowls help keep it cooler as well.
Large bowls of water they can stand in are also a great asset in hot weather. But again make sure you put a brick in them so they can get out when ready and not drown you little ones.
So important in summer to think before you leave home for the day, what the temperature is going to be, and ensure your birds are adequately protected from the heat.
Also realize that your birds become vitamin depleted in hot weather they sweat loosing those soluble vitamins such as vitamin C. So if you know hot weather is forecast start giving your birds some water soluble vitamins before and while it is hot, Solvita or Amilyte are good ones for this. This will help your birds cope and recover better.
