Can everyone please give a big shout out and thank you to outgoing Councillors Sarah Patterson and Dave Griffiths?

Sarah will continue her work as CEO of Gosnells Community Legal Centre so I am sure we will all still see her out and about in the City of Gosnells.

Dave will take a well earned rest, but not for too long as his wife Jan will require his skills in their local family business Feedman Stockfeeds

Thank you both for your service and dedication to the City of Gosnells, you will be missed.

Great Information

With our overnight temperatures starting to drop, and winter around the corner, we thought it was a good time to talk about THERMONEUTRAL ZONES and LOWER CRITICAL TEMPERATURE (LTC). Understanding these ranges helps us to make decisions around our horse's health, feeding regimes and rugging in winter.

Just like with humans, animals have a core temperature that their body needs to maintain for their vital organs to function. As outside temperature decreases, your horse’s body needs to work much harder to maintain its core temperature.
The THERMONEUTRAL ZONE is the range of temperatures between which a horse uses little to no energy to maintain its body temperature.
🌡️ In horses, the average Thermoneutral zone is between 5°C and 25°C.
🌡️ In humans, the average Thermoneutral zone is between 25°C and 30°C.

❓The big difference here is that our range is much narrower, so we feel cold and uncomfortable at a much higher temperature than our horses. It's not as simple as that though, there are factors that influence how comfortable our horses feel and whether their body has to work harder to stay warm. This is where the LTC comes in.

The LOWER CRITICAL TEMPERATURE (LCT) is the temperature below which they need to increase their metabolic heat and digestible energy intake to maintain their body temperature. For most horses this is between 0°C and 5°C, BUT this varies depending on the climate they are used to. For horses that live in a much milder climate their LTC may be higher, or for those in a much colder climate this may be lower.

There are lots of influences on an individual horse’s LCT, including:
➡️ Whether they have a natural, thick coat or not,
➡️ Age (young horses, foals and seniors have a higher LCT)
➡️ Weight and Surface Area to Volume ratio
➡️ Health status (sickness and injury can increase LCT)
➡️ Wind chill factor and moisture in the air

When temperatures start to drop below the lower critical temperature, additional dietary energy may be required.

Fantastic news. Will make life easier for everyone

We are really excited to announce that due to a very generous grant from City of Gosnells. Orange Grove Adult Riders now has, in the clubroom, a brand new state of the art PA System. This is very exciting for the club. We now have the benefit of communicating to any area on the grounds via this system. No more running long distances to pass on messages, dodging horses and riders. It will save us all a lot of time and improve our communication at rallies and events. We will be showing off our new system at this weekend Dressage Gala, broadcasting class times, announcing presentations and of course promoting and thanking our generous sponsors We will be able to play ambient music and imagine how much it will speed up actions at times when first aid assistance or emergency help is required. We are very thankful to receive this contribution to our club from the City of Gosnells.

6 WAYS TO AVOID WINTER WEIGHT LOSS IN YOUR HORSE
Winter is coming...so what do you need to do to help your horse, young or old, get through winter in great condition and health? Here are our top tips for feeding your horse through the colder months:

1️⃣ Be proactive! If you have a horse prone to weight loss, currently in poorer condition or an older horse, work hard on adding some weight and condition to them now, to help with insulation and energy reserves. You need to make any feed changes slowly, so preparing your horse for winter starts now.

2️⃣ You may need to increase your horse's dietary energy. Decreasing temperatures can increase your horse's energy requirements, as staying warm uses energy. Winter pastures tend to have a lower feed value, so your horse relies more on us to make sure their diet meets their nutritional requirements.

3️⃣ Increase your horse’s intake of fibre. Fibre and forage are the feed ingredients that contribute to your horse’s warmth the most! The digestion and fermentation of fibre produces heat, and they also promote the healthy bacteria in your horse’s gut. Good levels of good bacteria means they can access more energy from Volatile Fatty Acids. They should be getting a 1.5-2% of their body weight minimum.

4️⃣ Try to use quality fibre sources: the higher quality your hay or fibre source is, the higher it will be in calories. This is especially important in winter, where calorie intake is important for maintaining condition and providing energy. If your hay quality isn’t high, or you’re worried about fibre intake, try to add a feed that is high in quality fibre.

5️⃣ Add some oil for additional calories: adding just 20-60ml of Canola or Linseed oil can boost the calories and energy for your horse. It is great for oldies especially as it is easily digestible. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 will also keep their coat healthy – and a good coat is like a good jumper!

6️⃣ Pre and Probiotics can help: they can help promote the healthy gut bacteria that digests and ferments fibre and absorbs nutrients. Especially in older horses who’s bacterial populations have decreased, a boost can help them to convert their fibre to energy and warmth.

Wow, that is why diet is very important

Did you know that rabbits teeth continually grow? They can grow up to 12cm every year! A rabbit has 28 teeth and even their back ones are constantly growing. Rabbits wear their teeth down on their food, especially hay and grass.
