Remember to share the love, but not the chocolate with your pets this Valentine's Day! 💙 🍫

So we all know that chocolate is bad for our furry friends, but what exactly makes it so toxic to them? 🤔

Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Humans can easily metabolize theobromine, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.

A large dog can consume more chocolate than a small dog before suffering ill effects. A small amount of chocolate will probably only give your dog an upset stomach with vomiting or diarrhea, however with large amounts, theobromine can cause your dog to experience muscle tremors, seizures, an irregular heartbeat, internal bleeding or a heart attack. The onset of theobromine poisoning is usually marked by severe hyperactivity.

Different types of chocolate have different theobromine levels. Cocoa, cooking chocolate, and dark chocolate contain the highest levels, while milk chocolate and white chocolate have the lowest. The high level of theobromine in dark chocolate means it takes only a very small amount to poison a dog.

Make sure to keep all of your sweet treats out of reach from those cheeky paws, and don't hesitate to contact your vet in the case of a chocolate-thief emergency!

" Fantastic! As a first time doggy daycare user I didn’t know what to expect and was somewhat anxious. Brittany was wonderful explaining the process. She greeted us with a warm & friendly manner and made me feel very comfortable leaving my little guy in her care. She has a passion for her work and a true love of dogs. Her regular daily posts make it easy to see your pet and give you reassurance they are in good hands, getting spoilt and having fun!
Brittany is always accommodating when we need an extra day.
My boy nearly snaps his leash now trying to get in the door at Happy Tails Malaga.
I leave with a smile on my face knowing he’s going to have a wonderful day and he sleeps like a baby that night too!

Those most at risk include short-nosed breeds (Pugs, Bulldogs, Frenchies), long-haired breeds, puppies, & senior dogs.
If you ever suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke, take them to the vet ASAP!

Signs of heat stroke in dogs include:
🐶 heavy panting and excessive drooling
🐶 vomiting
🐶 signs of confusion and dizziness
🐶 staggering or collapsing
