Daenerys the Carpet Python Update!
Daenerys (Morelia spilota), one of our beautiful carpet pythons.
She recently had an X-ray after showing all the classic signs of being gravid (pregnant), but she was overdue past her pre-lay shed, which raised some concerns.
Daenerys has had quite the journey—she came to us severely overweight due to her previous owners loving her a little too much, feeding her rats her whole life for five years. Because of this, it was difficult to feel for eggs manually, so an X-ray was the best option.
The results? No eggs! While she isn’t gravid, this isn’t uncommon for snakes. Many females will still go through the full reproductive process—developing follicles, going through a pre-lay shed, and even nesting behavior—without actually producing eggs. This is called follicular stasis or resorption, where the body absorbs the follicles instead of forming eggs, often due to factors like environmental changes, health, or the absence of a male.
While we weren’t necessarily expecting eggs, we’re happy to confirm she’s in good health. Now, the focus is on continuing her weight management and ensuring she thrives in her new home.
She’s still her sassy, food-loving self—just with a bit less mystery now!
