The man behind the incredible elephant cakes you all knew and loved 🎂

As we head into our final days with Putra Mas before his journey to Monarto Safari Park early this month, we've been reminiscing on our elephants with the people who knew them best.

We sat down with Keeper Gav to hear some of his favourite memories from years spent alongside these gentle giants.

The elephants at Perth Zoo have left a lasting impression on all of us. They’ve created lifelong memories for generations of visitors, and for our keepers, they’ve been like family.

It’s bittersweet to soon close this chapter, but what an incredible chapter it’s been. Now it’s time to raise your trunks to Perth Zoo’s elephant era 🐘

How do you tell Numbat joeys apart? Just look at the stripes! 🐾

Here’s a glimpse behind-the-scenes at a joey weigh-in this spring. Our animal carers take quick snaps of their little stripey backs before putting them on the scales.

Each stripe pattern is unique and helps us keep accurate and valuable records on the growth of each individual.

Later in the year, some of these joeys will be released into wild habitat as part of our collaborative breed-for-release program.

Happy World Numbat Day! 😍

Celebrating World Lemur Day with a Halloween twist 🎃
Our incredible keepers carved these pumpkin treats for special enrichment.

Not only does it keep the lemurs mentally stimulated, it's super adorable to watch too.

Thanks to our animal care team, life for our lemurs is pretty sweet, but it's much spookier for their cousins out in the wild. Sadly, one of their biggest threats is habitat destruction.

That's why we proudly partner with Madagascar Fauna & Flora Group (MFG) to support their incredible on-ground conservation work💚

In the last year alone, MFG grew enough native plant species to successfully revegetate more than 1.950 hectares of forest in Ivoloina Park and another 10 hectares in Betampona Reserve - how amazing is that?!

This is really only the surface of the work MFG are doing to make the world safer for lemurs and countless other species, and we're very proud to partner with them.

Happy World Lemur Day!

Two decades dedicated to the elephants🩶

As we head into our final weeks with Putra Mas before his journey to Monarto Safari Park in early November, we've been reminiscing on our elephants with the people who knew them best.

We sat down with Senior Keeper Kirsty to hear some of her favourite memories from years spent alongside these gentle giants.

Putra Mas really makes crate training a breeze! 😍

Every day, our wonderful elephant carers take him through a session to prep him for his jumbo journey across to his forever home at Monarto Safari Park.

We’re always working on elephant time and don’t have an exact move date just yet, but we’re aiming towards early November if you’d like to come and say goodbye! 🐘

Elephants touched the hearts of many, not just our keepers 🩶

As we head into our final weeks with Putra Mas before his journey to Monarto Safari Park in early November, we've been reminiscing on our elephants with the people who knew them best.

We sat down with Erin and Linda, two of our wonderful Docents, who have volunteered at Perth Zoo for over 25 years. Erin and Linda shared with us some of their favourite memories working alongside these gentle giants.

Vale Jaya 🧡
Today was tough for the Zoo family as we said goodbye to our majestic 17-year-old Sumatran Tiger, Jaya.

Many of you would be aware that we had been monitoring Jaya’s health for some time, particularly as he entered his golden years.

In 2018, he was diagnosed with an ectopic thyroid carcinoma and had a tumour removed. He recovered well from that operation, but his post-surgery prognosis was expected to be only around nine months.

Considering that was over seven years ago, we were extremely lucky to have the time with him that we did.

This week, keepers noticed Jaya was behaving abnormally so he was taken to our Veterinary Hospital for a full work-up. After a physical exam, it was apparent that he could no longer experience an acceptable quality of life.

We're heartbroke, but the best welfare decision was to give him a dignified end and say goodbye.

A couple of his carers have penned some thoughts for him.

From Keeper Jenna:
"Jaya was the first and only tiger I had ever had the privilege to work with, and what a tiger he was!
His favourite thing to do was get his keepers to jump – then he would trot off so proudly. But it was just as endearing to see his look of disappointment if you foiled his plans last minute.
But he did have a soft side and would choose to sit with his keepers on balmy afternoons in the sun, licking his paws and watching the world.

It’s going to be very hard to accept he’s gone. He’s left a big hole in our hearts and the entire Zoo. He’ll always be my most handsome stripey boy 🧡"

From Keeper Laura:
"It's hard finding words to describe the impact Jaya has had on me. If you asked keepers to describe his personality, you would get vastly different answers. To me, Jaya was the perfect combination of spicy and sweet.

Over the last few years, he had become a completely different tiger to the one that keepers used to know. While he still had the natural instincts of an apex predator, he proved that old animals could learn new things, building strong keeper bonds, and progressing a repertoire of cooperative care behaviours.
Jaya has had a profound impact on my keeping career and on his team over the years. We'll miss you so much Jaya."

Jaya was born here at Perth Zoo in 2008 through our role in the regionally coordinated breeding program.

We know there are many tiger lovers in our Zoo community, and while we won’t have tigers at Perth Zoo in the near future, we do plan to welcome more down the line as part the rainforest ecosystem precinct in our Master Plan.

Thank you to our incredible team of animal carers and veterinary staff. You really gave this majestic boy your all 🧡

Swinging into International Gibbon Day!

It’s been three months since our Gibbon Crossing habitat opened.

This world-class space was designed especially for this arboreal small ape species, closely mimicking what they would have in the wild 🌿

The overhead rope pathways have stretched their range to more than 170m – that’s as long as the footy oval at Optus Stadium!

With more space to brachiate, our primate teams have seen the gibbons test their agility and strength with new patterns of movement that we’ve hadn’t seen from this group before.

But the best bit? Seeing the looks of absolute awe from YOU, our visitors!

We’re so glad that our trio Jermei, Kayak and Lulani have inspired so many of you to become gibbon lovers and advocates 🖤
