What causes paw pad blisters and how to treat them......

Dog paw pad blisters are common.
After all, dogs walk around barefoot 24/7!
Here are some common causes of paw blisters:

1. Burns from hot pavement
2. Walking on rough terrain
3. Excessive exercise
4. Coming in contact with skin irritants
5. Allergies
6. Injuries
7. Cysts
While a cyst isn’t a blister, they can certainly look a lot alike. If you’re unsure if your dog has a blister or a cyst, it’s a good idea to chat with your vet.

Treating blisters on your pup's paws
While in many cases a blister doesn’t require a trip to the vet, they’ll need the appropriate treatment to heal properly and not cause additional complications.

Use an anti-bacterial wash
Protect the area with a bandage
Keeping dirt and debris out of the wound will prevent infection.
Avoid rough terrain or hot pavement
Don’t allow your dog to lick their paws excessively
Apply an antibiotic ointment

With the weather going to be NUTS this week, this is a gentle reminder, especially to new pet owners....

Hot pavement can increase a dog's body temperature, which can lead to heatstroke.
Walk your dog when temperatures are cooler, like early in the morning or late in the evening.

Place your hand or a bare foot on the surface for 10 seconds. If it is too hot for you to keep your hand or foot on it, then it is too hot for your pet. Stay off the sidewalk, stay on grassy, soft surfaces, and try to walk in the shade when possible.

Then when you're home jump in the pool or turn on the hose.... like we did when we were kids.
